Message from the Cantor 3 There is no better place I could think of to start my Happy Anniversary cantorate. While I am only starting to understand what June Anniversaries makes this community special, I’ve sensed it from the Jack & Barbara Aland Michael & Amy Allon time I landed in Birmingham, when Robert and Faye Julie & Steve Anderson David & Donna Askenazi Levin greeted me at baggage claim. That feeling was Mark & Debbie Barstein Rodney & Susan Barstein strengthened as I met congregants throughout the Lincoln & Nancy Berland Alan & Sandra Berman interview experience. There was so much passion, David & Barbara Betten Michael & Emily Blumenthal not only for the wellbeing of the Jewish community, Ross & Wanda Cohen Robert & Eileen Cohn but for Birmingham as a whole. There was obvious Clinton & Amy Dillard Craig & Laurie Elmets Cantor Robby Wittner love for the synagogue and its congregants by everyone. Scott & Amy Garber While music is but a fraction of what goes on at Temple Warren & Toby Gewant Howard & Donna Goldberg Emanu-El, I believe I can use the power of music to help enhance the sense of Julius & Shirley Goldstein David & Susan Harwood community already so strong here. Music is one of the great ways to establish Jonathan & Sheryl Kimerling Michael & Rochelle Koslin lasting Jewish memories and identity. It can make Torah more accessible and Hugh & Deanna Leader Robert & Faye Levin meaningful, increase Jewish literacy, and allow us to channel our emotions Evan & Annette Lichter William & Linda Lehman into something positive for the entire community. I hope to find new ways to Gary & Ann Mollengarden Gary & Judy Monheit integrate music into our communal life so that we may joyfully express our Maureen & Mark Petrofsky Jewish identity as fully as possible for all demographics of our synagogue. Paul & Ann Rich Mark & Jody Robinson I’d like to give you a bit of insight into our life. Stephen & Katherine Rostand Earl & Marilynn Rothstein I believe I canMy wife Alex and I are both from the tri-state area. Michael & Cindi Routman Neil & Regina Sigman I grew up in Washington Heights in Manhattan and David & Nan Skier use the powershe grew up in Summit, New Jersey. We met in the Charles & Julie Stein last few weeks of our time at Hamilton College and of music to Roy & Debbie Swindal Murray & Marilyn Tanner became quite serious swiftly. Alex began working in Bruce & Shelly Tucker Joseph & Jackie Waites help enhancePR at Edelman straight out of college while I was Gary & Lynn Weinberger floundering a little to figure out my path. I had been Donald & Joan Weisberg Leonard & Janet Wertheimer the sense ofa Microbiology major in college and was pre-med, Peter & Sari Weber but before senior year I was aware that the amount (continued on page 4) communityof passion I would need to excel in the medical already so school environment was not in me. I was a bit lost. strong here. It was only when I by chance ended up leading a service for my home congregation that I realized the potential this path held for me. After a couple years at a desk job, I applied to Hebrew Union College and was accepted. Alex wasn’t going to join me in Israel, so we saw the eleven months apart as a test of our relationship. While it was difficult, we were engaged the summer after I returned and married a year later. It was the best decision I ever made, but I hope coming to Temple Emanu-El will be a close second! The kindness shown to me by all of you whom I’ve met was not a small part of my decision to accept this job. Pirkei Avot says that the world rests on three things: Torah, service to God, and acts of loving-kindness. The resonance and importance of kindness is expounded upon by Rambam in Hilchot Avel. In this text, Rambam tells us that kindness is contagious and that it can induce further Torah and acts of service to God. Thus, the three pillars of Judaism are intrinsically connected. You have already shown me kindness in spades. May this kindness and all that follows between us lead us to bring more Torah into the world. B’shalom v’hitragshut, Cantor Robby Wittner
