4 Around Our Temple Happy Anniversary The following was a speech given by Ginger Held, President of the Grafman Endowment Fund, at our Kol Nidre service: AnNnoivveemrsbaerries Never before has the GEF played such a pivotal role in Mark & Donna Berman Temple life as it has for the past 6 months. Our reach has been Russ & Jann Blitz extraordinary. Our congregational life has been dependent on the internet and our streaming platform. Our “blanket” has Warren & Bobbie Goldstein spread through computer screens that has provided us a Jack & Evelyn Held spiritual connection with each other. As Rabbi Wright so eloquently spoke in his Rosh Hashanah remarks — “our Stefan & Alice Kertesz Temple must be a place that provides refuge from suffering, Jerome & Shirley Leader a place that gives us the tools to repair our souls and the community. Temple Emanu-El will always push the blanket and cover everybody”. Steven & Kim Leaf And the Grafman Endowment Fund is a steadfast partner in this endeavor. Lee & Cathy Rogoff The Endowment Board is committed to continue our mission of providing Daniel & Nancy Rousso funds in perpetuity. That phrase is key — Perpetuity means continual existence, Andrew & Brittany Saag forever, or for an indefinitely long period of time. There are some misconceptions Mitchell & Norma Schneidkraut about endowments and their use: Louis & Lucy Schulhafer • Some believe that it is one large pot of money that can be used for whatever the Larry & Sandra Shulman Temple needs. Our Endowment is actually a collection of hundreds of funds set Benjamin & Monika Singletary up by generous donors like many of you, to provide a steady stream of revenue Bradley & Stephanie Sklar for our congregation. Think of these funds like retirement investment account — Michael & Elinor Staff which only spend the investment income each year. That way, each and every Stephanie & Steve Steinmetz year, our congregation has a steady stream of enhancement income. • Others perceive that the Temple can spend endowment funds however they Jim & Lori Weil please. Many of our funds are unrestricted with the intent to provide support Sanford & Bev Wiatrak for building preservation, religious education and program enrichment for our congregation at the discretion of the Endowment Fund Board of Directors. Also, Torah Study: a good number of our endowment funds are designated for a particular purpose that has been conveyed by the donor to provide specific enhancements and Every Wednesday, programs. It is our fiduciary responsibility to not only carry out our donors wishes, 12 p.m. but to legally abide by the restrictions of operating as a perpetual endowment. Our staff and leadership are constantly exploring ways to best utilize these funds each https://zoom.us/j/661751570 year to both match the donor’s wishes and meet the needs of the congregation, or dial-in at +1 312 626 6799 so that all of these funds are used to their maximum potential. Our Grafman Funds at Work — you may have noticed the periodic articles in the bulletin that Meeting ID: 661 751 570 recap how these funds are being used, and how we have provided a spiritual AND connection. Just a few examples are: • the “Our Temple”Worship Anywhere Fund has helped improve remote Every Saturday morning, access to our services for years. It began with radio broadcasts some 20 9 a.m. years ago. Then, in 2007 with gifts from the Collat and Alfred Cohn Families, we added the live webcast to replace the radios — we were way ahead of our https://zoom.us/j/731472885 time! Last year with the assistance of several other funds — the Gotlieb or dial-in at +1 312 626 6799 Sanctuary Preservation Fund and the Hess Chapel Fund — we helped improve the sound system in our Sanctuary and Chapel that we so desperately Meeting ID: 731 472 885 needed. This year, in response to the dramatic need resulting from social Password: torah distancing, with the help of the Salloway Fund, additional cameras have been added to enhance our virtual worship experience. Just imagine what it would be like if we weren’t able to connect spiritually in this way during this unusual time. • Another example is the Engel Family who recognized our congregation’s great love of music — and therefore provided a gift to ensure that we always

And, soon you will be receiving our Annual Report David Betten which will further highlight what we have accomplished during the past year. Charlee Brobst I encourage you to read it from cover to cover. Andrew Cohn So, I ask you today, how do we continue to spread our blanket? How important Cheryl Collat is it to you that our Birmingham community have a strong and vibrant Reform Frances Cypress Jewish congregation for years to come? Eva Feinman Last Yom Kippur I stood on the bima and introduced you to a community effort Tammy Fleisher called “Live Your Jewish Legacy” which was our plan of obtaining 40 new Legacy Jonah Geer gifts to celebrate our 40th anniversary. Our Endowment Fund Board was positioned Denise Goldstein to begin the conversations and then our community was shut down. The pandemic William Hayes forced us to retreat and pause for a while. During this time our Executive Director, Ronne Hess Jann Blitz, and her staff continued to collaborate with the Temple professional and Brian Levine lay leaders to find new ways of reaching out to our congregants. Now, I am happy Rachel Levkoff to report that our “Live Your Jewish Legacy” efforts have begun again, and we hope Brett Lewis you will be receptive to talking with us to share your thoughts, hopes and dreams Allan Lichtenstein for this congregation to thrive in perpetuity. Edgar Marx III Tonight, as I look out in this beautiful sanctuary and see the pews empty, Rebecca May I pause to reflect on the meaning of this day. I stand before my G-d and thank Him Alexa Nelson for the many blessings in my life. I ask myself, what can I do to leave this place a Morgan Nelson little better than I found it? As I walk past the yahrzeit boards and recall with fond Hannah Saab memories so many that are not with us today, I AM GRATEFUL FOR THEM! David Simon Even though they are not physically with us, we still reap the benefits of their hopes, Elizabeth Slive their dreams, and their gifts from the heart. In the spirit of what they gave to us…. Jack Steinmetz let’s ask ourselves… what will we leave our children and grandchildren and what Joseph Strauss will our legacy be? How far will our “blanket” reach? On behalf of the board of the Grafman Endowment Fund, thank you in advance Please note that Anniversary and Birthday for your engagement and generosity and I hope that we will all be inscribed in the list is gathered from information in the Book of Life for a peaceful, healthy, and happy new year.
