April 2020 Nissan/Iyar 5780 The monthly bulletin for Temple Emanu-El www.ourtemple.org (205) 933-8037 Birmingham, Alabama Create a Meaningful Shabbat Experience at Home 1 Make Shabbat your own. Many Reform Jews see Kabbalat Shabbat services as an integral part of Jewish living, but when synagogue isn’t an option, there’s nothing quite like a cozy Shabbat at home. Try to see this time as an opportunity for personal observance, whether alone or with your loved ones. Even if you’ve never lit Shabbat candles or recited blessings over your wine and bread, now is the perfect time to begin. 2 Watch services online. If you can’t leave home but don’t want to miss the joy of Shabbat services, you’re in luck. For those who are comfortable using technology on Shabbat, “attending” services online is a great alternative to being there in person (and you don’t even have to change out of your pajamas!) Temple Emanu-El is streaming Erev Shabbat Services via Facebook and our website (ourtemple.org/onlinecommunity for details). 3 Spend time talking Torah. Observing Shabbat from the comfort of home provides an opportunity to have thought-provoking and enriching discussions with your family about Torah. Brush up on the weekly Torah portion found on our website (ourtemple.org). You can facilitate a meaningful, productive Shabbat conversation with your family by fostering participation, encouraging questions, and engaging with Jewish text and learning in unique ways. Learn more about the weekly Torah portion at Torah Study Wednesdays at 12 p.m. or Saturdays at 9 a.m. (see details on back cover). 4 Cook a special meal. With nowhere to go, why not take the time to cook a memorable Shabbat meal? Browse Jewish recipes online to find a dish that will make Shabbat evening special for you and your family — from Ashkenazi staples like kugel and brisket to entrees, sides, and desserts inspired by global Jewish cuisine. Try your hand at baking challah – and don’t forget to say HaMotzi before you enjoy the delicious fruits of your labor! 5 Try a fun family activity. During Shabbat, a time when we set aside time for meaningful engagement, doing Jewishly themed arts-and-crafts projects can inspire kids’ creativity while helping them engage more deeply with their Judaism. BimBam’s (bimbam.com) animated videos on youtube will guide you in making a paper hamsa, learn- ing the art of Jewishly inspired papercutting, and even creating “Jewish slime.” Don’t forget to turn on a favorite Shabbat playlist from Spotify for some family-friendly background music! No matter how you decide to observe Shabbat, take a moment to say the Mi Shebeirach prayer, which wishes a r'fuah sh'leimah (complete healing) to all those suffering from coronavirus. You may also wish to say a prayer for the wisdom and skills of medical scientists, researchers, and public health officials around the world as they fight the spread of virus. May we soon see an end to these uncertain times. (adapted from urj.org) Our Mission: Temple Emanu-El nurtures our relationship with God by making Judaism come alive, welcoming all people to help them grow on their spiritual journeys, and bringing more love and kindness into the world.

Our Youth and Education 5 The Torah calls Pesach \"Chag Ha-matzot.\" But we call it \"Pesach.\" APRIL 2020 Why is this so? Rav Chaim Volozhiner explains as follows: YOUTH AND “The word Matzot and the word Mitzvot are spelled exactly the same in EDUCATION Hebrew. Thus \"Chag Ha-Matzot\" can be read \"Chag Ha-Mitzvot,\" meaning that by leaving Egypt and receiving the Torah, the Jewish People now have All Youth & Education the opportunity to earn great reward by doing the Mitzvot.” programs are currently cancelled, with tenative In this spirit I have watched with great inspiration and excitement as our students continue to plan and execute the mitzvah projects they made plans to resume on commitments to completing as a result of our first day of Religious School Sunday morning, and the challenge put before them. • Our Kindergarten spent time a Brookdale entertaining the seniors, April 19, 2020 bringing them gifts and snacks to enjoy. • Our 1st grade is planning a project for UAB Children’s hospital • Our 2nd Graders are making snack bags for the parents in the NIC unit at UAB. • Our 3rd graders collected items for the Humane Society and took it there to visit and learn about their mission. • Our 4th graders honored the memory of “Cupcake” McKinney by inviting her family to meet them. They made cupcakes and the students collected toys for “Cupcakes” preschool. • Our 5th graders have done two projects for the homeless and hungry in our neighborhood at 5 Points. • Our 6th graders collected and donated food to the Food Closet at CJFS. All of these projects give us insight into our Jewish future and it looks very bright from where I sit. May your upcoming Passover holiday be meaningful, bringing you a continued awareness of how fragile our freedom is and how taking care of it helps provide for all. Chag Sameach, Lynda Gutcheon, Interim Director of Education Where the Birds Never Sing Wednesday, April 22nd, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. Join our teens for this fascinating and triumphant story. In his riveting debut, Where the Birds Never Sing, author Jack Sacco tells the realistic, harrowing, at times horrifying, and ultimately triumphant tale of an American GI in World War II. As seen through the eyes of his father, Joe Sacco — a farm boy from Alabama who was flung into the chaos of Normandy, who survived the terrors of the Battle of the Bulge, and who helped liberate the notorious Nazi concentration camp at Dachau — this is the heroic story of the young men who changed the course of history. Special thanks to the Leah Marx Teens Education Fund of the Grafman Endowment Fund for sponsoring this inspiring Teens program.
