Around the Temple 3 Purim is a time of Healing Service great joy in the Jewish world. Thursdays Funny and musical re-enactments of our story of triumph February 18 & March 18 are put on, the Megillah is read, carnivals take place, and children (as well as adults) dress up. It can be a wonderful 6:00 p.m. experience for people of all ages and observance levels. While Purim should be fun, as we celebrate religious freedom and a victory for the Jewish people, that fun shouldn’t take away from the important lessons we must draw from our story. There are many lessons to be gleaned from M’gilat Ester (meaning the Scroll of Esther), including the courage to stand up to societal expectations, as Vashti did, and the fight against all forms of persecution. But the message I wanted to deliver to you is about one that is a little less commonly touted: human purpose. When Mordechai implores Esther to intervene in the calamity that is about to occur, he asks her, “And who knows if you have come to this royal position just for this occasion?” I’m taking a bit of liberty with the translation, as it’s a hard verse to decipher word for word, but the point is that Mordechai asks Esther to use her position of power to effect the type of change she wants to see in the world. He essentially asks Esther to take the words of our great rabbi, Hillel, into account. If not now, when? If the most powerful Jew in all the land won’t help the Jews, who will? The Purim story teaches us that we cannot wait for others to do the work. If we don’t help those in need, who will? Mordechai asks Esther, who could conceivably sit back and enjoy the rest of her life, to risk upsetting her king to save her kin. So, this Purim, let us have fun, but let us also choose action over inaction. Let us choose not to wait for justice to come to us, but to seek it out. Chag Purim sameiach! At a time when our congregational life has been so dependent on the internet and our streaming platform, our Endowment has truly been a steadfast partner. For example: Our “OurTemple” Worship Anywhere Fund has helped improve remote access to our worship services for years. Last year with the assistance of the Gotlieb Sanctuary Preservation Fund and Hess Chapel Fund, we improved the sound system that was so desperately needed. Now in response to dramatic needs due to social distancing, with the help of the Margaret & Maurice Salloway Legacy Fund, in addition to the aforementioned funds, additional cameras have been added — greatly enhancing our congregation’s virtual worship experience. Additionally, the Gail & Jeffrey Bayer Religious School Fund has been instrumental in underwriting the myriad of creative programs to engage our youth with our virtual Sunday morning “Good Morning Sunshine” services, wonderful Lulav video and Hanukah Time Machine production, as well in creating a user-friendly on-line learning platform. Of note, these recent technology upgrades are some of the ways our Endowment helps facilitate our congregation’s everchanging needs — and a real testament to the flexibility of these enhancement funds year after year. We can only imagine what it would be like if we weren’t able to spiritually stay connected, particularly during this most unusual time of social distancing.
