A VIEW FROM THE BIMAH “Once, while Samuel and Avlat were sitting together and happened to see some people going to the meadow, Avlat (pointing to one of them) said to Samuel, That man is going but will not return, for a snake will bite him and he will die. Samuel replied, If he is a Jew, he will not die, he will go and return. While they were still sitting, that man who went returned. Avlat arose, and removed the man’s pack, and found in it a snake cut in two. Samuel asked the man, What mitzvah did you do? He replied, Every day we pool our bread and eat it. But today one among us had no bread, and he was embarrassed. So I said, I shall undertake to collect the bread and put it in the basket. When I got to him, in order to relieve him of his embarrassment, I pretended to take bread from his hand. Samuel went forth and expounded the words, Tzedaka delivereth from death, (Proverbs 10:2) not merely from natural death, but from death in any form.” –Talmud I love this Talmudic story for a number of reasons. First of all it reminds us of one of the most important mitzvot, feeding the hungry. When people in our community do not have enough to eat, our tradition teaches, we must not turn away and ignore them. Secondly, it implores us to keep in mind the dignity of the recipient of our charity. Finally, I love this story because of Samuel’s enigmatic statement, “Tzedakah delivereth not merely from natural death, but from death in any form.” What on earth could he have meant by that? When we feed a hungry person, we are not only saving his or her physical life, we are also saving ourselves from a spiritual death that grows out of indifference to the suffering of others. Every time we harden our hearts to those less fortunate than we, a little part of our soul dies. When our hearts are open and generous, when we allow ourselves to empathize with the needy, our souls expand and we are enlivened. One of my goals this year is to strengthen the relationship between Temple Beth El and the Jubilee Center, a soup kitchen here in Hollywood that provides social services and meals to the hungry five days a week. Last year, the center provided almost 35,000 meals to needy. I am looking for volunteers to form a committee to discuss ways in which we, as a Temple, can help the Jubilee Center. The Jubilee Center needs people of all ages to volunteer a couple of hours a week at its facility to serve meals and to sort and pack food packages for the elderly and disabled. Let us heed the words of the Torah,“The needy will never be lacking in the land; that is why I command you to open your hand to your poor and needy brother and sister in your community.”-Deuteronomy 15:11 RABBI ALLAN TUFFS EMAIL: [email protected] ___________________________________3____|__C__O___N__N___E__C__T__I_O___N___S__A__U___G__U___S__T__2__0__1__6____________________________________
CANTOR’S NOTES I will never forget my first Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur at Temple Beth El. The year was 2000, and I had been hired that summer to be the cantor at this wonderful congregation. I was overjoyed and very grateful for the opportunity given to me by Rabbi Tuffs and the lay leaders of our congregation, led by former Temple President Dodie Weinstein. I knew that my life would never be the same. But I had no idea how many life-long friends I would make in the ensuing years, and how much I would grow and evolve on my Jewish journey. Our temple has been through a lot in the past 16 years. So has our country. And so have all of us on a personal level. But that’s the nature of life. Nothing stays the same. The only constant is change. So we must embrace new challenges, and be grateful for all the blessings and lessons that God is giving us every day. A new year lies before us, an empty page. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are about new beginnings, and the chance to become all that God meant for us to be. For me it is a great honor and joy ....and a humbling experience.... to lead our congregation in prayer and song on the High Holidays. I am very grateful to all of you, my Temple Beth El family. NEW YEAR 101 1 3 2 1 Over the centuries, Jews have4 commonly eaten apples and other fruits dipped in honey, symbolizing their hope5 for sweetness in the year ahead. 6 2 On ROSH HASHANAH, the round shaped challah symbolizes the cycle of life and the crown with which we coronate God, every New Year. The shofar, made from the horn of a 3 ram, is sounded throughout the High Holy Days period. It also is sounded during the ROSH HASHANAH service and at the end of YOM KIPPUR. Many people participate in the tradition 4 of Tashlich, on the afternoon of the first day of ROSH HASHANAH. They throw bread crumbs in a body of water, representing the sins, which we hope to cast away. 5 Traditionally, many Jews wear white on YOM KIPPUR, to symbolize the pure and clean way we hope to go into the New Year. The Book of Jonah is read during the 6 Mincha service on YOM KIPPUR, teaching us about our spiritual voyage. When we face our wrongdoings and ask forgiveness on YOM KIPPUR, we discover that like like Jonah, we can all change direction in our lives__________________________________1__4____|__C__O___N__N___E__C__T__I_O___N___S__A__U___G__U___S__T__2__0__1__6___________________________________
