Monday 1 June, 2015 p3 The Big Interview with David Pierre“As President, I will change Seychellois society”As part of our series of interviews with presidential hopefuls, we spoke this week with Leader of the Opposition, David Pierre. He explains why he made the choices he did and why he believes he is the best candidate for the presidential elections. There are talks that you could also be joining the race for thepresidential elections. Will you? Yes, I will definitely take part in the upcoming presidential elec-tions.And what motivated this decision? As the leader of a political party which is represented in Parlia-ment, I believe I need to take part in the elections. But I also believethat if elected, I will make a massive difference in society. This is dueto the way I think, the way I see things, as well as the will that I haveto make sure that the important democratic principles that many ofus talk about but that are not respected are upheld. I have the willto turn Seychelles into a society where the rule of law is respected, where the fundamental rights that the Constitution gives citizens ap-ply to everybody irrespective of their political beliefs. I think it’s alsoimportant that people know that I will never put myself in a positionwhere I think I have the right to decide who holds Constitutionalrights. At no point in my presidency, will I take it upon myself to de-cide whether Mr X or Mr Y should have Constitutional rights. So what you are saying is that at this point in time, you believethat important democratic principles aren’t being respected? There is a lot of talk about the fact that people’s rights are not be-ing respected and I will make sure that my government understandsthat people who are paid with taxpayers’ money understand that theyhave no right to violate the rights of others. In my government, thiswill never be tolerated. All Seychellois will understand that in a PDMgovernment, their rights will be respected and if ever there is anyevidence that a civil servant has violated the rights of a Seychelloiscitizen, then that person will not have a place in my government. And in the four years you have been leader of the opposition,to what extent do you think you were able to defend those prin-ciples? Those are issues that I always talk about wherever I go, be it theNational Assembly, when I meet with President, in national forumsor when I represent Seychelles abroad. I have always believed that thegreatest asset of a country is its people and the only time a country canfulfill its potential is when each and every citizen has the opportunityto fulfill his or her potential. And this can only happen when societyallows it to happen. And this starts with the kind of education that wegive people, including respecting the rights that they have. The Lions though rallied to pull two goals back courtesy of Collin Bibi and Malagasy Herizo Razaparany for a 3-2 score at break. The second half was an anti- climax even if Foresters had two strong appeals for a penalty. The officials though were not convinced as they held on for a 3-2 win which propels them to 11 points. Coach Choisy was pleased with this achievement though he felt over confidence affected his team’s showing. “We came here to win to qualify and at 3-0 up, we grew overconfi- dent but I’m happy we qualified and did not depend on others to help us and it is a good achieve- ment.
