By Dr. Jo-Anne Clarke, Dean, Continuing Studies C anadian designer and innovator Bruce Mau wrote a manifesto for growth in 1998 that starts with four simple words: “Let events change you.” These words have never been more relevant than over the past 18 months. A global pandemic, climate change, racial injustice and calls for real action on respect and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples— there is no doubt that we are experiencing disruption and change on a massive scale. Much of this change may feel like it is being thrust upon us, but how we experience and respond to these events is critical. Ask yourself, when things get back to “normal,” will I resume my old routines or try something new? When faced with new ideas, will I hold fast to my views or be open to diverse perspectives? How can I be part of designing a better future? Mau said, “You have to be willing to grow. Growth is different from something that happens to you: You produce it. You live it. The prerequisites for growth are the openness to experience events and the willingness to be changed by them.” This fall, I invite you to explore new ideas, design your new normal, and re-connect with others through learning. In the calendar, you will find a wide range of courses on everything from Intercultural Communication in the Workplace to an exploration of Ecclesiastes and the Meaning of Life. Deepen your knowledge about a particular subject, or explore a topic that you know absolutely nothing about. It’s up to you. 8

You have to be willing to grow. Growth is different from something that happens to you: You produce it. You live it. The prerequisites for growth are the openness to experience events and the willingness to be changed by them. – Bruce Mau Let events change you. What do these words mean for Continuing Studies at UVic? We have learned that being prepared, adaptable and responsive is critical. That’s why we are offering small class or online learning environments to suit your lifestyle and comfort level. We’ve also introduced more flexible learning options like Introduction to Mycology, a new self-study course on fungi that enables you to gain foundational scientific knowledge at your own pace. We have also seen how the pandemic has accelerated the need for professional growth and training. Continuing Studies has been actively working with industry and community partners to help people reskill and upskill for evolving work demands. This past year, we launched new micro-credential programs in business communication, administrative technology and emergency management, to name a few. And we’re just getting started. Massive change is afoot, inviting us to rethink how we live, work and solve complex problems for the planet. This fall, I encourage you to re-emerge from social isolation and reflect on recent events with others. Connect to diverse perspectives, share your big ideas, and just be open to new experiences. Let education change you. 9

By Therese Eley, Marketing Services F ew things stimulate the brain as much as music does. Whether playing an instrument or simply listening to a favourite song, music activates many different parts of the brain. From the temporal lobe, which helps process tone and pitch, to the cerebellum, which helps process rhythm, timing and physical movement, to the amygdala and hippocampus, which play a role in emotions and memories, music provides a total brain work-out. 19

“Music is structural, mathematical and architectural. It’s based on relationships between one note and the next. You may not be aware of it, but your brain has to do a lot of computing to make sense of it,” notes one Johns Hopkins otolaryngologist. “If you want to keep your brain engaged throughout the aging process, listening to or playing music is a great tool.” But beyond merely stimulating the brain, some research suggests that music offers many psychological benefits as well. Here are just some of the many research-based benefits of music on the brain and body. Music can help manage pain and reduce stress McGill psychologist Daniel J. Levitin, along with his postgraduate research fellow, Mona Lisa Chanda, found that listening to music can be more effective than prescription drugs in reducing anxiety. It does this by reducing the levels of cortisol in the body, also known as the stress hormone. In addition, they found that listening to or playing music boosts the immune system by increasing the production of virus-killing antibodies, making the immune response more effective at fighting off disease. Listening to music can be more effective than prescription drugs in reducing anxiety. Music may reduce symptoms of depression For reasons similar to how music affects memory in Alzheimer’s patients, recent studies are indicating that music therapy is a helpful treatment for depression and other mood disorders. Because music engages areas of the brain associated with emotion, motivation, cognition and motor functions, music therapy can be used to increase socialization, inspire movement and increase endorphin production. All of these have a positive effect on people’s emotional expression, interpersonal skills, self-esteem and quality of life. So the next time you’re feeling blue, put on an upbeat song and let the toe-tapping do its thing. 20

Music can improve memory Research has shown that the repetitive elements of rhythm and melody help our brains form patterns that enhance memory. Additionally, music is increasingly being explored as a therapy modality for people with Alzheimer’s and brain injuries. Because music stimulates so many different parts of the brain at once, musical memories are stored differently in the brain than regular memories, so even when areas of the brain associated with memory are injured or deteriorated, playing or listening to a favourite song can evoke memory recall and increased lucidity. A Finnish research study showed that the emotional power of music has a positive effect on reinforcement learning. Music can improve cognitive performance Contrary to what the deafening silence of a library might lead us to believe, it might actually be better to study while listening to music. A Finnish research study showed that the emotional power of music has a positive effect on reinforcement learning. It showed that participants who listened to enjoyable music while studying or training improved their overall task performance when they were subsequently tested. Music can entertain, inspire and bring people together like nothing else can. It is embedded deep in our evolutionary roots and is universal across all cultures throughout history. It is an activity that can be enjoyed from birth to death, and the more we are able to expand our appreciation of music, the more benefits we are able to reap. 21

ou may have guessed already from my name that I am a \"hyphenated-Canadian\", meaning someone who has immigrated to Canada. Yes, I was born in the warm and colourful continent of Africa. From an early age, growing up in Senegal, I realized that change is the only permanent process that weaves our humanity together. The African concept of Ubuntu speaks loudly about our common humanity. Ubuntu is about being a person and that our humanity is dependent on other peoples’ humanity, that we have a constant responsibility as human beings towards other beings (other people and other living beings). For me, I also define myself as the kind of person who believes in the crucial importance of relationships. Our realities with every being are interconnected and our lives can’t evolve outside of each other. Peace, social justice, human By Dr. Moussa Magassa, Instructor 28

While for many this is a welcome prospect, mental health experts are reminding us that it is also to be expected that we may feel anxiety and apprehension about a return to “normal.” The prolonged stresses, uncertainties and in some cases, trauma, brought on by the pandemic have resulted in an overall increase in mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD).
