Back to Cambodia Nol Soth stood in front of his restaurant in San Francisco. The restaurant, called Lucky Moon, was very popular. Americans loved the Cambodian food served at Lucky Moon. Some customers have to wait for hour before they could eat. Nol just didn’t have enough tables for everyone. 5 “We need to decide what to do,” Nol told his wife Narum. “If we stay here in San Francisco, we need to make our restaurant bigger. We need a better kitchen and more tables. Otherwise, people will stop eating here.” “Yes,” agreed Narum. “I think it’s time we made the restaurant bigger.” “Or we could leave San Francisco and return to Cambodia,” said Nol. 10 “What?” asked Narum. “Why go back to Cambodia?” “We came to America many years ago, but I still think of Cambodia as my home,” Nol told her. “I would like to go back. I would like to help Phnom Penh become a strong city again.” “But what would we go there?” asked Narum. 15 “If we can own a restaurant in America, we can do the same thing in Cambodia,” said Nol. Over the next few weeks, Narum and Nol talked a lot about what to do. Narum said she missed Cambodia, too. She wanted to see old friends and family who still live there. “It won’t be easy to start a new business again. We will have a plan very carefully,” 20 Narum told Nol, “but I would like to try.” Nine months later, Nol and Narum went to San Francisco International Airport to fly to Phnom Penh. Both of them cried as they were boarding the plane. They were happy to be going home, but they were scared about the future. Were they making a mistake? Were they too old to start over again? Would the people in Phnom Penh welcome them back? 25 At customs the workers looked through Nol and Narum’s suitcases. After that, they sawmany people were waiting for them. Soon everyone was hugging them and crying at the same time. Driving through Phnom Penh, Nol was surprised by what he saw. “When we left, Cambodia was just starting to get better after so many years of war,” he told Narum. “Now things are much better. Look! There are shops, businesses, and 30 restaurants everywhere.” “Yes,” said Narum softly. “Maybe too many restaurants.” “Don’t worry,” Nol told her. “Americans loved our Cambodian restaurant, and I think that Cambodians will love an American restaurant. In our new restaurant, I think we should serve American food.” 35 That’s just what Nol and Narum did. A month after they arrived, they opened their new restaurant. They called it San Francisco Moon. “We may not get rich here,” Nol told Narum the day the restaurant opened. “But, we’ll do all right. And it feels good to be back home.” Reading & Writing English Kru. Ninnet Chutchaolai 1

The 24-Hour Hiccups At first it was funny. Bart Friedman woke up on Sunday morning with the hiccups. “I can’t stop hiccupping,” he told his wife Vicki. “Suck on a lemon,” Vicki said. “My grandmother told me to suck on a lemon, and my hiccups stopped right away. It’s the best cure for hiccups. You just hold the lemon to 5 your lips and drink the juice. ” “No thanks,” Bart said “Well then, someone has to scare you. That work, too.” “I think the hiccups will stop soon,” Bart said. But Bart’s hiccups didn’t stop. An hour later he still had them, so he decided to try 10 the lemon. For five minutes he held the lemon to his lips. He hiccupped the whole time. Then Vicki slowly walked up behind him. “Boo!” she shouted. Bart jumped, dropped the lemon, and bit his tongue. “Ouch!” he said. “You scared me!” “That’s what I was trying to do,” Vicki said. “Are your hiccups gone?” Before Bart 15 could answer, he hiccupped again. At noon some friends came over to Bart and Vicki’s house. Each friend has a different way to cure hiccups. One friend told Bart to eat Mustard. Another friend told him to pinch his ear for two minutes. None of the cures stopped Bart’s hiccups. Bart didn’t eat dinner that night. He has a stomachache from hiccupping so much. 20 Later it was very difficult for him to sleep. He was getting a headache from hiccupping. The next morning when he came downstairs for breakfast, Vicki told Bart she had a cure for his hiccups. “It’s called Korean hand acupuncture,” she said “I read about it on the Internet. I’m going to call an acupuncturist right away.” 25 “Acupuncture?” Bart said. “I hate needles!” “I know,” said Vicki, “but they only put very thin needles in your hand.” “No way!” Bart said “I’d rather hiccup forever than have someone stick needles in my hand.” “Wait a minute,” said Vicki. “Say that again.” 30 “Why?” asked Bart. “Because you didn’t hiccup when you said it,” said Vicki. Bart and Vicki were quiet. They waited for Bart to hiccup, but he didn’t. “You did it” said Bart with a big smile. “You cured me. You finally found something that really scared me. A New Heart for Mt. Fuji Kelly Tanaka felt great and she wanted everyone to know it. A few years earlier, this Japanese-American woman was very sick. She almost died. Kelly had a heart disease. When she was 35, her doctor told she needed a new heart. He said a new heart was the only thing that could save Kelly’s life 5 The list of people needing new hearts was very long. It took more than two years before Kelly’s surgeon told her there was a new heart for her. That day Kelly went to the hospital for an operation. Kelly didn’t know much about the heart donor-only that he was a 45-year-old man who died in a car accident. She didn’t know his name, but she was happy that his family 10 donated his heart. She wished that everybody waiting for hearts and other organs could be. After the operation, it took Kelly months to feel better. On her 40th birthday, Kelly did something she loved. Kelly and her husband Gil went mountain climbing. Soon Kelly and Gil went mountain climbing very month. At first they climbed small mountains that were easy, but after a while they climbed bigger mountains. 15 One night Kelly told Gil she wanted to climb Mt. Fuji in Japan. “Until always wanted to go to Japan. I want to see where my parents grew up, and I want to climb Japan’s highest mountain with you.” Kelly paused. “There’s another reason I wasn’t to go,” she said softly. “Until a few years ago, people could not get new hearts in Japan. Doctors are starting to give people new 20 hearts now, but there are only a few Japanese organ donors. If I climb Mt. Fuji, maybe more people in Japan will learn about organ donations.” Gil thought it was a great idea. Two months later, he and Kelly flew to Tokyo. They met Kelly’s cousin Mikoto. Mikoto wanted to help Kelly, so she asked a reporter and a photographers to climb Mt. Fuji with Gil and Kelly. 25 “Great,” said Kelly. “I want people to read about my story. I want everyone to know what people who have new hearts can do.” The first part of the climb was a three-hour bus ride to Gogome (pronounced go-go may). With an altitude of 7500 feet (2286 meters), Gogome is where most climbers start. From Gogome, it was a six-hour climb to the top. Kelly couldn’t make the whole climb in 30 one day. She knew she had to be careful. After three hours of climbing, Kelly and the other climbers stopped to spend the night in a cabin. They were halfway up the mountain. On the second day, the climb became more difficult. Around 4:00 p.m., they made it to the top. As the photographer took pictures, Kelly pulled out a sign she had in her backpack. In both Japanese and English, it said, “Organ Donations Save Lives” Reading & Writing English Kru. Ninnet Chutchaolai 28

An African Safari Jack and Laura Kendall are on an African safari. Their guide Masilo is taking them through the Okavango Delta in Botswana. The Kendalls start their safari on the southern edge of the delta. Masilo will be their guide for their five-day safari. After showing the Kendalls their tent, Masilo takes them down to the river. Masilo 5 paddles the canoe while Jack and Laura listen to the birds singing in the trees. They see a crocodile sitting on the riverbank. The light of the setting sun makes everything look beautiful. Suddenly Masilo stops the canoe and points to something coming toward them in the water. Jack and Laura can’t believe their eyes. A hippopotamus swims by just a few feet from their canoe! The Kendalls don’t wasn’t to scare it, so they don’t say anything. 10 They just look and listen as it slowly swims by. Seeing the hippopotamus is wonderful. It is something the Kendalls will never forget. When they return to camp, Masilo says, “I’ll walk you to your tent.” “Oh, you don’t need to do that,” Jack tell him. “Yes I do,” says Masilo, “I know the Okavango Delta is beautiful, but there are 15 dangers here, too.” “What do you mean?” asks Laura, feeling nervous. “Don’t worry,” says Masilo. “You’re safe as long as you do what we tell you to do, but you shouldn’t forget that this is one of the wildest places on earth.” As they walk to the tents, Masilo slowly puts out his arm and stops Jack and Laura. 20 “That’s a mamba snake,” he says as he points to a snake in front of them. “It’s one of the deadliest snakes in the world. From time to time, we see one. We are fine as long as we don’t move too quickly. We’ll just stay here until it moves into the jungle.” Laura and jack give each other a worried look. Soon the snake moves into the bushes. Masilo can tell the Kendalls are scared. “Please, don’t worry. The mamba only 25 attacks when it is scared. Now you see why it’s always best to let me or one of the other guides lead the way. Over the next few days, you will see other animals, too. There are elephants, lions, and wild dogs in Okavango. These animals are wild and very strong. You don’t want to scare them or make them angry. That’s when they become dangerous. For example, the hippopotamus we saw this afternoon looked peaceful, but hippos kill more 30 people in the wild than any other animal.” “It seem like there is danger everywhere,” says Laura. “No,” says Masilo. “You will never be in danger when you are with me. I am very careful. In the 25 years I’ve been a guide, no one has been hurt.” Soon, they arrive at Jack and Laura’s tent. “You have nothing to worry about while 35 you’re in your tent,” Masilo tells them. “But don’t go walking around alone. The animals in Okavango are wonderful. You just have to remember you are a visitor in their world” Laura and Jack nod. “That’s true.” says Laura. “We’re visitors, and we’re very lucky to be here. This is the most amazing adventure I’ve ever had! ” Reading & Writing English Kru. Ninnet Chutchaolai 38
