ELECTRONIC SENSOR DESIGNDriveline Mounts Get Smart withNew Active Mount TechnologyIt was inevitable that sooner or later, traditional rubber-to-metal bonded engine mounts would becomemore sophisticated and smart. The new generation “tunable” active motor mount is equipped on severallate model vehicles and can change its dampening characteristics, which has a significant NVH (NoiseVibration & Harshness) advantage over a traditional passive hydromount or traditional rubber to metalmolded mount. An active mount has the ability to be relatively soft at engine idle to absorb the unwanted vibration andnoise, then stiffen up at higher engine speeds and loads to limit unwanted engine motions. This newestevolution in mount technology offers the best of both worlds by incorporating hydraulics, along with eithera vacuum pump or an electronic sensor to change the dampening characteristics.Improved O.E. Technology helps reduce NVH to provide better ride control, but with more moving parts, there can potentially be higher failure rates.Note: Always replace an active mount with a new active mount, whenoffered, in order to maintain the original dampening characteristicsthat were designed for the vehicle. On high mileage vehicles, it is recommended to replace all themounts at the same time to help eliminate annoying vibrations andreduce the risk of other mounts failing shortly after the original repair.HOW THESE MOUNTS CAN HELP GROW YOUR BUSINESS: VACUUM PUMP DESIGN• More mounts per vehicle = more sales opportunities• Advanced technology = Higher selling prices• Selling O.E. type mounts with sensors increases customer satisfactionLate model applications that currently have integrated active mounts into theirvehicles include Acura, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Infiniti, Lexus, Nissan and Toyota.

Mounting Trouble Signs: DoKey CausesWhy mounts lose their resiliency and function efficiency - ultimately leading to failure ˛ Acceleration ˛ Hot and Cold Temperatures ˛ Age and Ozone ˛ Engine Torque ˛ Braking ˛ Collision Damage Symptoms, CausEngine VibrationOne of the most common symptoms of worn engine and transmission mounts is excessive enginevibration, especially under heavy acceleration and/or engine revving, when engine movements are mostpronounced. Worn motor mounts can’t absorb vibration or the loads. As a result the vibration istransmitted to the body of the vehicle and can be felt in the passenger compartment.Probable Cause:• Worn conventional engine and transmission mount rubber will harden as a result of age. Extreme changes in temperatures and abuse cause a hardened mount to crack or separate from the steel it is bonded to.• Newer Hydraulic mounts can have punctures or tears in the mount allowing the hydraulic fluid to leak and cause the engine to sag. The result is more vibration will be transmitted directly to the chassis.

Practical Tips for Driveline Mount Failure Signs es and Related Vehicle ProblemsKnocking Noise and/or Excessive Shifting orExcessive Engine Rocking Misaligned EngineEngine knocking/rattling is another common symptom An engine that appears out of alignment is causedof worn engine and transmission mounts that will cause by severely damaged mounts that will not keep anthe engine to excessively shake and shimmy in an odd engine properly aligned and positioned to allow formanner. If not repaired quickly, these symptoms will adequate engine and other supporting drivelineresult in additional damage to other vehicle components. component operation.Probable Cause: Probable Cause:• A severely loose or broken mount will cause • Broken or severely damaged mounts. the engine to rock back and forth especially during acceleration.

Fixing the Cause, NoFixing Ford FocusVibration ProblemsFord has issued a Tech Service Bulletin (TSB 11-3-24) regarding problems with engine vibration on the2000-2011 Ford Focus. This bulletin applies to Anchor engine mount numbers 2938, 3003 and 3085.THE ISSUE: SERVICE SHIELDSome 2000-2011 Focus vehicles may exhibit an excessive enginevibration which is most noticeable when the transmission is engagedin reverse. This condition may be caused by small stones, road debris, ice or snow packed/lodged in the rear engine roll restrictor.THE SOLUTION:Inspect the rear engine roll restrictor for debris. Remove anydebris from rear engine roll restrictor and install a service shield.Fixing Mount Clearance & VibratioThere are two different part numbers available for the PT Cruiser with the 2.4L engine. The 2949fits the 2.4L non-turbo engine, while the 3169 is specifically designed for the 2.4L turbo engine. While both mounts may appear to look the same, there are subtle differences.

When one component wears out, it will put added stress on the connected MOUNTpart, which can cause the corresponding part to fail as well.THE SOLUTION:Always replace both the torque strut mounts and brackets together to ensure therepair is done right by fixing the root cause, not just the symptom.n Issues on Chrysler 2.4L EnginesTHE ISSUE:1. If you try to install a 2949 mount on a PT Cruiser with the 2.4L turbo engine, you will experience a clearance problem. 3169 is the correct mount for this application which is notched to gain proper clearance.2. Conversely you cannot use the 3169 mount for 2.4L non-turbo engines. The 3169 mounting hole has a larger diameter than the 2949. This can cause the mount to slide back and forth due to the larger hole diameter, resulting in potential engine vibration and premature failure down the road.THE SOLUTION: 2949 Mount Body Is Not Notched Larger DiameterAlways verify if the 2.4L engine is a 3169 Mount Body Is Notched to Provide Proper Clearance Mounting Holeturbo (3169) or non-turbo (2949).Just because the mounts looksimilar, does not mean they willwork properly.
