About !Pose! ‘Pose!’ is an endeavour to understand the importance of lighting in portrait photogra- phy. Complete with stunning poses that depect different light angles, patterns and tones in a photograph. All portraits have been carefully picked out to come together and become a guide for easy portrait photography. Angles of light The direction of light has a tremendous amount to do with creating a sense of shape and texture in images. To be a bit more precise, the direction of light controls the width of the shadows. And it’s the shadows that create a sense of shape and texture in your photographs. 4

Patterns of light Lighting pattern is defined as how light and shadow play across the face or the subject to create different shapes. Different lighting patterns create different shadows on the face and result in different moods of portrait photography. 12

Tones of portrait The tone of a portrait is defined by its contrast and saturation. Contrast is the range of difference between the different tones in a picture. Whereas, saturation is the intensity of the colour that is diplayed in an image. In grayscale, contrast defines the tone of the image. 27
