FROM THE EDITOR Dearest spuds, This edition of MASH is brought to you after a 2021 still ravaged by COVID (CS ‘edical knowledge). Still, we managed to get through it united by a common love, a common goal and a common beverage - milk. Milk is the only reason the ‘Re- mier League community were able to unite at both the National ‘Remducational Roadtrip and Summervention this year. The term “milk” comes from “Old English meoluc (West Saxon), milc (Anglian), from Proto-Germanic *meluks “milk” (source also of Old Norse mjolk, Old Fri- sian melok, Old Saxon miluk, Dutch melk, Old High German miluh, German Milch, Gothic miluks)”. In food use, from 1961, the term milk has been defined under Codex Alimenta- rius standards as: “the normal mammary secretion of milking animals obtained from one or more milkings without either addition to it or extraction from it, intended for consumption as liquid milk or for further ‘rocessing.” The term dairy relates to animal milk and animal milk ‘roduction. Milk comes in many varieties, Low fat, no fat, full cream, high calcium, high pro- tein, soy, light skim, Omega 3, high calcium with vitamin D & floride or extra dol- lup and now even almonds can be milked. FROM THE CHAIR It’s 9:5TK AM on a Thursday morning in April. I’m scrubbed into theatre. The operation? Diagnostic lap. I’m on camera duty, but all hands are off tools. The room is silent as we lie in wait for our morning address from the QLD overlords Annastacia ‘alaszczuk and Dr Janette Young. Collec- tive sighs of relief and cheers of joy fill the room as the ‘remier announces the borders will open for the Easter long weekend. We finish the case and I ‘olitely inform the surgeon I will not be returning for the afternoon list. I would be driving for IJ hours the following day and needed to go costume shopping. Such was the way of life in 2021. Chaotic and full of disappointment. Living each day wondering if we’ll make it to the next ‘Rem event and gambling if we’d make it home afterwards. But we take the little wins that come our way. As a community based almost entirely on social gatherings and national events; it brings endless ‘ride to see us flourishing in these trying times. Having run both the National ‘Remducational Roadtrip and Summerven- tion in 2021 after 12 months of isolation for some; I can finally say I got to ‘lay some ‘Rem that tastes like real ‘Rem. I hope to join you all in another milk circle soon.

Finally, I was back with my friends. I was reclothed, by none other than the NHA Chair himself !
NSWHA CHAIR: BAA RAM EWE NSW departed 2021 upon a giant boat, got a harvest snaps sponsorship, showed up en masse at NRRT21 on our home turf and then ‘roceeded to remain strong all year despite lockdowns. What a state - as chair I could not be more ‘roud of these cursed ‘layers I call friends. All of this culmi- nated in many new FRACRLs and MRACRLs for our great state and I for one cannot wait to see what they do with ‘Rem in NSW. Trying our best forever!
As 2020 came to a close, things were looking up. Covid saha numbers were down, interstate travel was opening, and Victorians had started venturing into the outside world CHAIR: loose ship again. Spirits were high as the year culminated in an incredible South Australia ‘Rem Roadtrip (AKA SAR- RT) which attracted close to 50 ‘layers from three (3!) states of Australia (as well as a token Chilean) for 3 days of (mostly) good-natured shenanigans - #dangermilk #badrugby #VIKING. Huge FITM to Mr. Eyes, Confes- sional, Youngkuza, Disappearing Act and Ukraine Wreck (although honestly, when are we getting our bloody ‘atches!?) However, Covid was not yet done with us. While hopes were high for events to resume normalcy, it was not to be. Despite this, a low-key Skulduggery ‘rovided a welcoming venue for a number of new ‘layers, starting the year off well. Medcamp ‘roved to be more dif- ficult – with older years unable to attend the 2nd night of Med in Black and an underwhelming demonstration of what ‘Rem could be, recruitment opportunities were lim- ited. ‘res Keg – while being an absolutely incredible night of extremely CovidSafeTM dancing and boat racing – was also unable to offer the opportunity for ‘rem-cruitment we had hoped for. Although engagement among younger years was limited, thankfully there were still opportunities for the ‘Rem- keen to get their fix; enter the National ‘Rem Road Trip (NRRT). Enticing over 70 ‘layers, this ‘roved to be an incredible event, and – I think – is currently classified as the largest in-person Australian medical student event of 2021 (Editors note: I think it still is as of Dec 2021 hehe). Make sure to keep your diaries free for NRRT next year – you might get a repeat of highlights from this year such as the SAHA meeting being minuted by the iPhone 12 voice-to-speech program [“Doughnut time allows around the able name of the game is cowboy Premier
League balls in the car out of your chair yeah hey man outré 1331 Utnage Centre a story one consume”] or the rebirth of chanting [“laaaaaaaaaaaaaaattteee aaaatttttt niiiiiiiiiiiiiggggghhhhttttt”]. Again, life was looking good. National events were back up and running at full strength, smaller state events were going strong and everyone was looking forward to finally being able to go and enjoy a full Austra- lia-wide Convention again… …Right? …RIGHT?? Fuck you Delta. Fuck you NSW and your shitty lockdowns. As ‘hase 2 of the year begins, and we are once again ‘lagued by restrictions, gathering caps and all-round bad vibes we struggle once again to find our optimism. One can hope – one can dream – that Summervention in Victoria will still happen (‘lease God let it be so), but one must also find comfort in the small things – spon- taneous ‘Rem at Medrevue, ongoing interstate banter and treason, a year still filled with good ‘eople and good times… a ‘ossibility of a New Year’s Vention?? (Editors note: SUMMERVENTION HAPPENED AND IT WAS LIT). It has been an absolute ‘leasure being ‘art of the ‘Remier League community over the ‘ast 6 years. Countless friends, unforgettable memories and all too many Good TimesTM. I’m sure it will be in good hands for next year. With Fridge joining the RACRL family, a brand new coat of arms and motto for The College, a SPUD filled convention and venues locked in for written examinations – 2020 couldn’t have started off better. Coming out of a conten- tious year for the community, The College began to explore the ‘ossibility of shifting away from the schmAMSA National Convention to our own national events. Wanting to avoid not having exams for 1TK months, we opted to run written and viva exams at M20, and trial supplementary vivas at SV20. Apparently this angered the Old Gods. ‘ostboning not once, twice, but on three separate occasions - it became clear that written examinations were not going to be ‘ossible in 2020. The decision was made to run emergency distance viva ex- aminations with assistance from state BoE members for those members who were graduating, or would like to examine in their final year. A big congratu- lations to all the new Fellows of The College. In the absence of regular RACRL activities, The College ‘layed host to the inaugural National ‘Rem Competition. Over BJ weeks ‘articipants took ‘art in ‘uzzles, challenges and MCQs to ‘rove their ‘Rem superiority. Henlo ‘Rem fam! Coming to you (not so) live from Sicktoria, as your current reigning dictator RA- CRL Chair, Exes & Hoes. After a very incredibly thorough and t r a n s p a r e n t consultation ‘rocess with many members of the NHA and schmAMSA, it has been brought to my attention that not much is known about the highest body of accreditation in all the land, the Royal Australasian College of ‘Remier League (RACRL). This beginner lesson covers the basics of the College, and how to become a Mem- ber and Fellow. The RACRL was founded in 20IJ by a group of 19 Highly Esteemed, Highly Re- garded (HEHR) ‘layers and almost every year since its inception, has hosted ex- aminations to accept new inductees into the College. As ‘er the more common- ly-known, yet lesser Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS), the RACRL exams are two-fold, consisting of a written examination and a ‘ractical viva voce examination. Anyone, and I cannot stress this enough, ANYONE, is able to nominate them- selves to sit the written component of the RACRL examinations. This written exam tests knowledge of ‘Remier League, its history, culture, as well as some ‘uz- zles, and of course one’s ability to banter and show ‘izzazz. Those that ‘ass the writ- ten examination are hereby known as Members of the RACRL (aka MRACRL). Upon completion of the written examination, those candidates who ‘ass will be invited to complete the ‘ractical component, the viva voce examination. This ‘art of the examination will assess [secrets secrets secrets]. Those that successfully ‘ass the viva voce examination are hereby known as Fellows of the RACRL (aka FRA- CRL). In 2021, the RACRL examinations were held in Victoria at Summervention 2021. I can’t stress enough how fun and enjoyable these exams truly were (way better than any other med exams lel). If you don’t believe me, get in touch with your friendly neighbourhood FRACRLs and get their thoughts and opinions! ¬¬That being said, throw yourselves into these fun (and totally serious) opportunities and experiences. You SHOULD be able to enjoy these examinations with minimal ‘Rem experience or knowledge, so there really is no excuse not to get involved.

NHA REPORT Chair: Head-to-Head Following on from the work of NHA’s ‘ast, these 12 months have not been quiet for the 2021 National High ‘Able. The chaos of a global ‘andemic ‘roved to be the ‘erfect time to transition away from the schmAMSA National Convention and over to our own national events. For the first time in ‘Rem history we successful- ly ran the RACRL written and viva exams, along with the RA- CRL ceremony and NHA Chair handover at a Summervention. Friends of ‘Rem were abolished with our first ever non-med FRACRL. Outdated moves and chants were removed, while those games missing moves were fleshed out. But wait, there’s more. We’re the NHA that brought you VIKING VIKING VIKING, Just Vic, thought and spinal crimes alike, a bonjorter, the first look at an invisible ‘erson, danger milk, and Better ‘RemTM. NRRT21 REPORT NRRT21 brought with it the return of real life ‘Rem events - through ‘lague, flood and fire the nation- al ‘remducational event survived and the ‘layers who attended truly thrived. With more than TK0 attend- ees we believe it was in fact the largest ‘edical student event of the year (and no cases were had, huzzah). Olives were consumed. Owl friends were made. Fires were lit in the appropriate areas. Flood water was trod- den and ferries were ferried. ‘Rem was learned, forgot- ten, and learned again. For those who weren’t already aware, the national ‘remducational roadtrip is a TBA focused trip to the void and back. If you don’t know your ABCs from your BZBs, it is the trip for you. Introduction As the complexities of ‘Remier League are explored over time, there exists few interactions between the base 7 games and even most established variations that do not have a set ‘recedent (see: Botsquali in Cyclone ‘Remier League). I would go as far as to say that as a community we have succeeded in establishing concrete and unifying rules which dictate the laws of ‘Remier League such that new and complex variations are easily understood by applying these rules. Of course, there exists exceptions to these rules and many lie in the realm of hyper-complex ‘Rem. Hyper-complex ‘Rem There is a certain nostalgia to the blissful ignorance of timing into an ‘able and having no idea what is going on. The challenge of a new ‘uzzle and to feel like a TBA again. Alongside the inquisitive need to ‘ush ‘Remier League to its limits - this fuels the development of these ‘hyper-complex’ variations. Unfortunately, these variations are often self-limiting in that they are either a) too difficult to ‘lay, b) too difficult to chair or, c) not appropriate for the skill level of the ‘able. As a result, these games often fall to the wayside to be sparsely remembered by members of the community or completely forgotten (e.g. Mobian ‘ortals, ‘ortals of ‘ower, etc.). There seems to be an exception to this, and I want to introduce ‘The AfterRem’. The AfterRem Neither a time, nor ‘lace – The AfterRem is somewhat of an abstraction. There is no knowing if The AfterRem will occur on any given night and you are equally likely to find yourself in The AfterRem whether you intended on being there or not. At the conclusion of any given ‘Rem night, once traditional ‘lay has ceased; BJ – IJ ‘layers are transported to The AfterRem. There seems to be no discrimination as to the skill level of ‘layers inside The AfterRem; having been there with FRACRLs, MRACRLs, named ‘layers and TBAs alike. There is no knowing how or when The AfterRem will start, only discovering that you are now there. Once inside The AfterRem, ‘layers seem to have a ‘roclivity for ‘ushing the boundaries of ‘Rem. Layering variations, adding invisible ‘eople, ‘erpetual virtual games, and more. It also seems impossible to leave The AfterRem, only to be freed once collectively noticing that the night has escaped you and the next day has dawned. It is normally quite satisfying to leave the AfterRem, having ‘layed a night of excellent ‘Rem to be naturally concluded with a few rounds of The One, The Only, Ultra-Fast, Ultra-Elite ‘Remier League and Get Good or Go to Bed (?Breakfast) ‘Rem. I recently found myself leaving The AfterRem with a bitter taste, having explored a variation for hours and hours on end. Deconstructing it down to its very core concepts but seemingly getting no closer to understanding it than when we began. If you know the variation, very few attempt to ‘lay it, and even fewer Chair it. I am of course speaking about Forwards ‘Rem. The unholy union of two inverse games, Forwards ‘Rem should not be touched with a IJ foot ‘ole. Game 62 was once described as, “Anarchy, chaos and the reason why we can’t have nice things.” Subsequently Game 63 was described as, “[Game 62’s] extremely backward cousin.” Forwards ‘Rem is infinitely worse than either of these.i As a ‘urely academic endeavour, and since the game will likely never see the light of day; I have decided to explore the complexities of Forwards ‘Rem and the ‘hilosophy of approaching hyper- complex variations, and inverse variations in ‘articular, in an attempt to reduce the TI to chair-able and ‘lay-able levels. iWhile writing this segment I wanted to describe Forwards ‘Rem as the incest child of G62 & G63. I have since spent 30 minutes ‘ondering how to ‘lay G62 + G63. It’s a great thought experiment and well worth exploring with schmeer in hand.
While I do not expect anyone to be able to walk away from this study with a comprehensive understanding of all of the concepts discussed, it is important to note that elements of ‘Remier League and certain variations will be discussed didactically. Where ‘ossible, scenarios will be discussed using moves of ‘Remier League that are teachable under the CurRemculum. However, if you are yet to uncover the secrets of: The Base 7 Games Through the Looking Glass Game 62 Game 63 Time Rift I strongly encourage you to visit this document at a later date. I also encourage readers to have a look at Boy F., Wallaby. What is a Move? Getting ‘hysical with AIS and the ‘roposition of TI. 1st ed. Broken Hill: Australasian Journal of ‘Remicine; 2016. as many of the concepts established there will be revisited. For all those wishing to jump into the rabbit hole, ‘otare ut sciamus. Lockdown is really rough I just want to do something to stop me going insane.ii Ethics and Approval This research was conducted with the approval of the National ‘Remsearch Ethics Committee (NREC) consisting of the NHA Chairs of 2020 & 2021, the RACRL Chairs of 2019 & 2020, members of the Queensland High ‘Able and Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of ‘Remier League. Background The Telescopic ‘rinciple and Telescopic Index The Telescopic ‘rinciple states that, “The ease of Chairing the variation is directly ‘roportional to the number of concepts necessary to know.” While this statement holds true for high-concept games such that all games with a large number of concepts are difficult to Chair/’lay; this is not necessarily true for all low-concept games. Specifically, in relation to high mental/’hysical capacity games. For example, a game of Every ‘layer has 53 Invisible ‘eople ‘Rem is only dealing with the single concept of invisible ‘eople but is beyond the mental capacity of the Chair. Similarly, a game of Jedi ‘Rem requires no additional knowledge beyond the base games, is quite easy to chair, but is beyond the iiThis wasn’t it.
‘hysical capacity of the ‘layers. The Telescopic ‘rinciple is more accurately, “The ease of understanding a variation is directly ‘roportional to the number of concepts necessary to know.” While this might seem like a redundant statement, it is important to make the distinction between understanding a variation and being able to ‘lay/Chair it. Inverse Games The inverse games were briefly discussed in What is a move?, 2016 but as we have come to understand these games in more detail let us explore them further to determine what exactly makes a game inverse and how are the inverse games are related to each other. If we consider the variations of TOTO ‘Rem, Game 62, Game 63 and Through the Looking Glass in the following scenario. Figure 1: (+h → -h) HEHR Dr. Bathbomb, HEHR Dr. Shitstorm, HEHR Dr. Breaststroke Scenario 1. In TOTO ‘Rem, if ‘layer B were to Whiz towards ‘layer C, the ball would of course move from ‘layer B to ‘layer C. Scenario 2. In REDACTED, if ‘layer B were to Whiz towards ‘layer C, the ball would move from ‘layer B to ‘layer A. Scenario 3. In REDACTED, if ‘layer B were to Whiz towards ‘layer C, the ball would move from ‘layer C to ‘layer B. Scenario BJ. In REDACTED, the ball moves from ‘layer C to ‘layer B and ‘layer B ‘lays a Whiz towards ‘layer C. It is important to note that while the outcome of Scenario 3 and BJ are the same and they would look visually identical, the concept behind why the ball moves before or after the move is important in distinguishing the inverse games from each other. The other inverse variations not mentioned all function similarly to one of the scenarios above. However, in all scenarios it can be seen that in inverse games, the ball moves in the opposite
direction of DIRECTIONAL moves. This distinction is important as targeted moves (e.g. Chow, Kuon, Zoom, etc.) interact differently across the inverse games. So, what about Time Rift? An argument could be made that Time Rift is not a true inverse game, but it certainly shares elements of the inverse games. This can also be said for some of the inverse games that have been listed ‘reviously. If you consider these games chronologically, the ball actually interacts with the moves as you would expect. However, it is easier to conceptualise these games as inverse games based on how they are ‘layed. Time Rift is unique in that each trio of moves is disrupted chronologically, however, the trios themselves are ordered correctly. Additionally, within any given inverse game, if a ‘layer was to Whiz, the outcome (being the ‘osition of the ball in the next move) of that Whiz will always be the same. In Time Rift, the directly ‘roceeding move will not necessarily impact the current move being ‘layed. For example, if an antihorsewise Whiz was ‘layed by the same ‘layer at two separate ‘oints in the game, the ball would not necessarily be in the same court in both situations. Chronologically, it would but ‘ractically, not always. Chaos and Constraints Compared to TOTO ‘Rem, some of the inverse games are often considered chaotic and can certainly feel this way when ‘laying them. Some of the inverse games such as Through the Looking Glass are no more chaotic than TOTO ‘Rem. And others such as Game 63 are infinitely more. The number of ‘ossible moves at any ‘oint during an inverse and standard game are actually quite similar if thought about how the games are constrained. There are three different types of constraints: Intrinsic Constraints o These are the constraints that govern how the game is ‘layed (e.g. you may not ‘lay a move if the ball is not in your court) and also include the set of illegal moves (e.g. Whizzing against the flow) Backwards Constraints o These are the moves that may only be ‘layed under certain conditions once a ‘rerequisite has been met o These can be direct (e.g. Alley-oop) o Or they can be floating (e.g. ChBang) Forwards Constraints o Moves that force the next ‘layer(s) to ‘lay a specific move o There are no forwards constraining moves in TOTO ‘Rem In TOTO ‘Rem, the ‘layer with the ball can direct any legal move towards any ‘layer. The total number of moves that can be ‘layed at any ‘oint can be thought of as: ′ × ′ − ( ′ ) In Game 63, the inverse is true. Such that all other ‘layers may direct any legal move towards the ‘layer with the ball. Giving us the following: ′ × ′ − ( ) We can see that the number of ‘ossible moves at any ‘oint during a game of TOTO ‘Rem or Game 63 is conceptually very similar and only differs by the number of constrained moves. The set of intrinsically constrained moves in TOTO ‘Rem and Game 63 is actually again very similar – regardless
of the variation, you cannot Whiz against the flow, Chow three times, etc. However, at the start of a round in Game 63, ‘layers have access to all floating moves until the games are set, and all direct backwards constrained moves become forwards constraining. While not all inverse games have forwards constraining moves, in those that do, these moves can be: Once Constraining o E.g. Bang – must be resolved with a Whiz Twice Constraining o E.g. Alley-oop – must be resolved with an overhead move followed by a flow establishing move Thrice Constraining o ‘rink and learn o There’s more than one The fluctuation between expecting any move from any ‘layer and needing to ‘lay specific moves from specific ‘layers definitely contributes to the difficulty in ‘laying/chairing inverse games with forwards constraints. It is what, in the author’s opinion, creates the ‘chaotic’ nature of these games. The Alley-oop Conundrum Alley-oop is the only move in ‘Remier League where the ‘layer may interact with the ball when it is neither currently in, nor landing in their court. This doesn’t ‘ose a ‘roblem for most of the inverse games but creates an interesting scenario in Game 62. As Alley-oop neither originates nor lands in the ‘layers court and must be ‘layed in keeping with all other rules (i.e. following an overhead move); there is no way for it to be used in G62 to ‘steal’ the ball as it exists in TOTO ‘Rem. However, a modified Alley-oop could be used to ‘steal’ an overhead ball. In the following G62 scenario, ‘layer C has ‘layed an antihorsewise Whiz and ‘layer A has followed it with a Bounce. Figure 2: (+h → -h) HEHR Rejectile, HEHR Mathlete, HEHR Dishonourable Discharge
‘layer B could ‘otentially ‘lay an Alley-oop here to bring down or ‘intercept’ an overhead ball into their court. In keeping with how the move functions in other variations, this Alley-oop should be ‘layed in the horsewise direction with the antihorsewise hand (to oppose flow) as depicted below. Figure 3: Game 62 - Alley-oop 1 This doesn’t really fit with the idea of ‘intercepting’ an overhead ball and would make more sense for the Alley-oop to be ‘layed in the opposite direction to ‘intercept’ the ball as it moves across the ‘layers body as shown below. This would of course maintain flow instead of reversing it as Alley-oop normally does. Figure BJ: Game 62 - Alley-oop 2
Furthermore, there doesn’t seem to be room for consecutive Alley-oops to be ‘layed in this manner as they can be in TOTO ‘Rem. As Alley-oops should only be ‘layed when a ‘layer can interact with the ball in airspace, after the first modified Alley-oop of either type, the ball is no longer above any ‘layers.iii Reconceptualising The notion has been around since ‘Rem itself and many ‘layers do it without even noticing. The act of transforming how you think about a game to simplify the way it’s ‘layed/Chaired. Without naming any variations, many will recognise this as, “Good, bad, good, bad, good…” Other notable examples include: Hurricane + Cyclone ‘Rem and Alternating Victorian Special/Through the Looking Glass ‘Rem. While these concepts are not mind-blowing, due to the nature of how inverse games interact with each other, this method can be used to simplify more complex inverse variations like Forwards ‘Rem. Discussion The Forwards ‘Rem TI ‘aradox Forwards ‘Rem combines the games of Time Rift and Game 63. While Time Rift is a reasonably new variation and itself has a decently high TI of anywhere between 5 and IJ – it is conceptually quite easy to understand and can be ‘layed at a UFUE level with some experience. Likewise, G63 has been in circulation for some years now and among HEHR ‘layers can easily be ‘layed at a UFUE ‘ace even with the inclusion of Antlers and Viking Master. Why then is it that the union of these two games results in a triple digit TI variation that is almost impossible to ‘lay without stopping every 2-3 moves to figure out what is going on? Breaking Down Forwards ‘Rem If we examine the following scenario of 6 ‘layers. Each ‘layer can only Whiz in the antihorsewise direction (as indicated by the right-facing arrows). Figure 5: (+h → -h) HEHR Dr Rainbow Road, HEHR Dr Loose Ship, HEHR Baa Ram Ewe, HEHR Dr Head-to-Head, HEHR Exes & Hoes, HEHR Dr Hit & Run TOTO ‘Rem 1 2 3 BJ 5 6 Game 1: TOTO 'Rem iiiAfter in-depth discussion at an NHA meeting the following was ruled: “In the scenario of alley-oop in Game 62 the NHA ruled in favour of WOULDN’T YOU LIKE TO Cowboy KNOW YOU ‘rink STINKY and TBA learn.”
For the game of TOTO ‘Rem we can see that each ‘layer Whizzes in the order that they appear, and the ball moves normally. All is well. Game 63 6 5 BJ 3 2 1 Game 2: Game 63 For the game of Game 63, each ‘layer whizzes in reverse chronological order. And in keeping with the rules of inverse games, the ball is moving in the opposite direction (+h) to the Whizzes (-h). Time Rift 1 3 2 BJ 6 5 Game 3: Time Rift In Time Rift we can see that every third move is happening a move early. But the ball is still moving in the correct overall direction. As this is a repeating ‘attern, it can be written as: 132132 Game BJ: Time Rift with cycles Forwards ‘Rem 5 6 BJ 2 3 1 Game 5: Forwards 'Rem (labelled) Applying the same translation from [TOTO ‘Rem -> G63] to Time Rift we can establish the order of moves in Forwards ‘Rem. While nicely highlighted and labelled appropriately, it is easy enough to track the ball from ‘layer to ‘layer, however, while ‘laying the variation we don’t have this luxury and the game likely looks a lot more like this in our mind ‘alaces. 231231 Game 6: Forwards 'Rem And here we start to see why the game begins to slow down. The Role of Each ‘layer Understanding the role of each ‘layer in the variations and how they are constrained can help reduce the TI of Forwards ‘Rem. The type of constraints here are the ‘layer (a specific ‘layer must make a move), and the move (the outcome of the move must be a specific ‘layer).
Time Rift [1] - The role of the first ‘layer in each trio is very simple. Their move is not constrained in any manner. The ‘layer is set by the ‘revious trio (or the Chair for the first move of the game) and for all intents and ‘urposes, they are just ‘laying ‘Rem and can do whatever they want within the standard rules. [3] - The second ‘layer, chronologically third, can also do whatever they want. Their role is to send the ball to the next trio. This ‘layer can be anyone at the ‘able and they can also ‘lay any move as long as it is reachable within two moves (including their own). [2] - The game essentially revolves around the third ‘layer, chronologically second, who is the recipient of the first move. Their role is to ‘connect’ [1] and [3]. This move resolves the trio, and the game continues. Most of the complexity of Time Rift lies in this move and remembering where the ball was sent from the ‘revious move. Forwards ‘Rem [2] - In Forwards ‘Rem we can see that the first ‘layer in each sequence is chronologically second. In Time Rift their role was to ‘connect’ [1] and [3]. Since neither [1] nor [3] has been established yet, [2] can be anyone at the ‘able and their target can also be anyone. [3] - The second ‘layer in the sequence is chronologically third. In Forwards ‘Rem, both the ‘layer and their target are now constrained. The ‘layer must be the recipient of the ‘revious move or whoever [2] sent the ball to. And their target MUST be whoever was [1] of the ‘revious trio (if this is the first sequence in a game, the target can be anyone). [1] - The final ‘layer of each sequence is chronologically first. In Forwards ‘Rem, they have to target whoever [2] was. This ‘layer can also be anyone at the ‘able. Interestingly, since moves [2] and [3] were reversed in Time Rift and subsequently reversed again in Game 63 the [2] – [3] transition is actually just ‘Rem again. However, this realisation ‘roved entirely useless in significantly reducing the TI of Forwards ‘Rem. The Issues With Forwards ‘Rem Where to begin? From the analysis of each move above, it is evident why Forwards ‘Rem is so much more difficult than Time Rift. Each trio begins with a completely random move that introduces two new constraints. The second move must fulfil one of the constraints from the first move, but also one of the constraints from the ‘revious trio. The final move of each trio is again a random ‘layer, but the move is once again constrained and itself introduces a constraint. Compared with Time Rift there is one less constrained ‘layer, adding to the overall chaos. There is also one additional constrained move, meaning ‘layers have to be resolving (and Chairs checking) twice as many moves. Although it’s difficult enough to keep track of all the different constraints, this isn’t actually the biggest ‘roblem with Forwards ‘Rem. Ball is in the Court of Who? As a normal game of Time Rift can conclude at any ‘oint during a cycle – it follows that a game of Forwards ‘Rem can also begin at any ‘oint in the cycle; and resolving where a game has started can be next to impossible. In keeping with Game 63, the ‘layer whose court the ball is in (BCO) does not need to make a move as the game moves chronologically backwards from when the ball entered their court.
The easiest way to approach this is by analysing each scenario starting in either [2], [3] or [1]. 231231 Game 7: Forwards ‘Rem Ball is in the court of [2] In the scenario where the ball is in the court of the first ‘layer in each trio, chronologically second, the next move must be ‘layed by [3]. Referring back to the roles above we get the following: ‘layer 1 [3]: Any ‘layer, any target ‘layer 2 [1]: Any ‘layer, target BCO ‘layer 3 [2]: Any ‘layer, any target ‘layer BJ [3]: Recipient of ‘revious, target ‘layer 2 ‘layer 5 [1]: Any ‘layer, target ‘layer 3 Ball is in the court of [3] In the scenario where the ball is in the court of the second ‘layer in each trio, chronologically third, the next move must be ‘layed by [1]. ‘layer 1 [1]: Any ‘layer, any target ‘layer 2 [2]: Any ‘layer, any target ‘layer 3 [3]: Recipient of ‘revious, target ‘layer 1 ‘layer BJ [1]: Any ‘layer, target ‘layer 2 ‘layer 5 [2]: Any ‘layer, any target Ball is in the court of [1] In the scenario where the ball is in the court of the third ‘layer in each trio, chronologically first, the next move must be ‘layed by the next trio, starting with [2]. ‘layer 1 [2]: Any ‘layer, any target ‘layer 2 [3]: Recipient of ‘revious, target BCO ‘layer 3 [1]: Any ‘layer, target ‘layer 1 ‘layer BJ [2]: Any ‘layer, any target ‘layer 5 [3]: Recipient of ‘revious, target ‘layer 3 The ‘erpetual Game For any given game of Forwards ‘Rem, following the ‘atterns above can determine which cycle a game is in. The first move of any game is redundant, however, if the second move does not target BCO, you must be in a [3] start. Likewise, if the third move does not target ‘layer 1, you must be in a [2] start, etc. A Chair familiar enough with these ‘atterns will easily be able to establish which cycle the game is in and determining which moves are/aren’t legal from there is significantly easier. However, there are instances of Forwards ‘Rem where ‘lay may continue indefinitely without establishing an order. Let us consider the game of Forwards ‘Rem below. The square brackets here indicate who is making the move.
WRP NGI: Forwards ‘Rem BCO: C 1. [E&H] Wz (-h) 2. [DoaT] Bsq 3. [H2H] 1 (-h) BJ. [EH] Sp (-h) 5. [DoaT] Ku (H2H) 6. [H2H] Ch (E&H) 7. [E&H] Ch (DoaT) TK. [DoaT] Sp (E&H) 9. Wz (-h) Games 9-11: Game TK reverse engineered into TOTO ‘Rem The missing moves in the [2] start are moves that would have been ‘layed before the game started/after the game ended. Having delved into this rabbit hole, it is obvious now that this specific scenario is only ‘ossible with a certain move set and the moves themselves must be ‘layed only between three ‘layers in order. This does bring to light one important feature of Forwards ‘Rem; the ‘layer who receives the ball will always be allowed to ‘lay the next move, and the ‘layer who ‘layed the second to last move (i.e. two turns ago) will always be the correct target. This holds true regardless of where in the cycle the game is. That is of course, until the introduction of the forwards constraining moves. Flow and Floating While the cycle can now be determined by who ‘lays and who gets targeted, introducing flow from Whiz the game, floating moves, and certain moves from Zoom the game adds another level of complexity in chairing this variation. If we consider the sequence of {Bounce – Bang} being ‘layed in a game of Forwards ‘Rem. Immediately we know this cannot be a [2] – [3] transition, as this would contradict the rules of Whiz the game. For [3] – [1], the Chair has to check that: ivIt is interesting to note that the game of Forwards ‘Rem itself was also a completely legal game of TOTO ‘Remier League distinct from each of the reverse engineered games.
a) the bounce landed in the court from two moves ‘rior; b) the move before the Bounce was a Whiz move that would allow for a Bounce; c) the Bang was ‘layed in the correct direction such that the resulting flow in the two ‘rior moves was correct; d) the ‘layer in two moves time is the same ‘layer from two moves ago (in keeping with how Bang works), and; e) the move that ‘layer ‘lays, is a Whiz in the correct direction to allow for the Bang. For a [1] – [2] sequence of {Bounce – Bang}, a similar set of conditions must also be checked. Similarly, if we look at a sequence of the Takahashi moves {7 – 5} being ‘layed – again we know this can’t be [2] – [3] as 7 and 5 are not consecutive moves. This time it also can’t be [3] – [1], unless the [2] at the start of the trio had already been a 6. So, the game is forced into being [1] – [2] while forwards constraining the next move to be 6. However, the Chair must also know that for three consecutive Takahashi moves to be ‘layed, the two extremities (i.e. the 5 & 7) must either be ‘layed by the same ‘layer, or ‘layers separated by a single other ‘layer. While flow, floating moves, and other forwards constraining moves can be used to force a specific cycle – they add a considerable level of complexity to ‘laying and chairing the game. These specific details are built into the base games of ‘Rem and are not considerations while chairing TOTO ‘Rem. But they become very important to keep track of while ‘laying inverse variations such as Forwards ‘Rem. Solving Forwards ‘Rem What would happen if instead of Game 63, Game 62 was ‘layed with Time Rift. If we consider the same game of antihorsewise Whizzes as before: 1 2 3 BJ 5 6 Game 12: TOTO ‘Rem To translate this game into Game 62 we have to consider the definition. In keeping with this, the most accurate translation would be the following. Game 13: Game 62 Here the differences between Game 62 and Game 63 become evident. Where Game 63 completely reversed the game, Game 62 has only reversed directional moves and not the order of ‘lay. Applying Game 62 to Time Rift we get: Game 1BJ: Time Rift + Game 62 or ‘Backwards ‘Rem’
While the differences between G62 and G63 are too great for this to be useful, this variation is much easier to ‘lay than Forwards ‘Rem. Appropriately coined, Backwards ‘Rem, shares the similarity with Time Rift in that each trio starts with its chronologically first move. This means that constraints are not carried across trios like they are in Forwards ‘Rem. Likewise, the trio is resolved with the [2] move to ‘connect’ [1] and [3] which results in much smoother ‘lay. The concept of ‘stealing’ from another ‘layers court is also much easier to keep track of rather than trying to think about whether moves were legal if they were ‘layed chronologically in TOTO ‘Rem. One of the big issues with Forwards ‘Rem has been that each trio starts with its [2] move. This was only the case because Time Rift ended with its [2] move. However, in Forwards ‘Rem this is somewhat arbitrary as the game doesn’t necessarily have to start at the beginning of each cycle. If it were ‘ossible to shift the cycles by 1 move, ‘erhaps it would be easier to ‘lay. Looking at the following game of 3 cycles of Forwards ‘Rem. TK 9 7 5 6 BJ 2 3 1 Game 15: Forwards ‘Rem Focusing on the middle trio consisting of moves {BJ, 5, 6}. If we shift that trio back one move we get moves {2, BJ, 6} which are not consecutive moves. However, if we shift it forward 1 move we get {5, 6, 7} which are three consecutive moves. The resulting game is cycles consisting of three new consecutive moves. TK 9 7 5 6 BJ 2 3 1 Game 16: Forwards ‘Rem Shifted And relabelling this to reflect the repeating ‘attern. 312312 Game 17: Forwards ‘Rem Shifted with Cycles We now have a game that ‘lays infinitely smoother than the original version. But before we delve into why, lets combine the notion of ‘stealing’ from Game 62 and change the numbering system to reflect the order in which the moves occur in Forwards ‘Rem rather than the order in which they occur in Time Rift. [3] steals from the ‘revious [1], and is the first move in each sequence. [1] steals from [2], and is the third move in each sequence. [2] steals from [3], and remains the second move in each sequence.
132132 Game 1TK: Forwards ‘Rem Shifted and Reconceptualised Look familiar? It’s the same sequence as Backwards ‘Rem but with Game 63 rules instead of Game 62. We now have a game where the first move in each trio is to steal from the ‘revious trio. The second move is arbitrary and can be anyone stealing from anyone. The final move is to connect [1] and [3] to resolve the trio. The game ‘lays almost identically to Time Rift and lacks many of the complexities that the original version had. The best ‘art? It’s the exact same game, just being chaired and ‘layed more efficiently. Naturally, the complexities in determining whereabout in each cycle the game has started still exist. But these can be resolved using the same methods as before. Once established, however, the game should be significantly easier to chair and ‘lay. Antlers and Viking Master As was the case with Game 63, there is an ‘articular difficulty with now added complexity in ‘laying Antlers and Viking Master in Forwards ‘Rem. The requirement for support to initiate the move, now with disruption to the order in which moves are ‘layed makes it next to impossible to ‘roperly coordinate the moves/support such that they are ‘layed in the correct order. For completions sake, here is what a sequence of Antlers with a ‘ass Antlers might look like in one sequence of Forwards ‘Rem. 1. H&R: A-h / E&H: A+h 2. [H2H]: ‘An (-h) 3. H&R: drops / DoaT: A+h BJ. [E&H] An 5. Everyone drops 6. H&R: A-h / E&H: A+h 7. [H2H]: An Game 19: Forwards ‘Rem Antlers A New Type of Bon Jovi With the introduction of chronologically disrupted games comes a new type of BJ distinct from the ‘ersonal or group BJ. Looking at the following sequence of moves in a game of Time Rift. Whiz Whiz Bounce Whiz Whiz Whiz Game 20: Time Rift In a game of TOTO ‘Rem given that all ‘layers involved had not ‘layed some number of Whiz moves ‘rior, this sequence would not incur any ‘ersonal BJ nor a group BJ. However, in the game of Time Rift, the last BJ Whizzes are chronologically adjacent and should incur a new type of group BJ – the chronological BJ.
Conclusion youtube.com/watch?v=7b(BJ)ULg131(’)M The world of hyper-complex ‘Rem is dark and scary, and seems to be dominated by these ever evolving inverse games. But even the highest TI variations within this realm can be ‘layed and chaired with the right approach. Armed with this knowledge and a thirst for complex ‘Rem – you can now confidently approach an ‘able knowing that ultimately, none of this matters. For your Chair is STILL… infallible. References 1.
