The river has humblebeginnings in the mountains south of Bend, but as it flows northward theDeschutes grows larger and larger thanks to many tributaries and boiling desertsprings. The most famous stretch of this magnificent river, known as the LowerDeschutes, starts just North of the town of Madras and flows 100 miles north tothe confluence with the ColumbiaRiver. It is the Lower DeschutesRiver that draws fly anglers fromaround the world in pursuit of wildtrout and summer-run steelhead. The Lower Deschutes River isspectacular to float, with manyroadless miles and riversidecamping spots along its banks.Where there are roads thatparallel the river, they are mostlyprimitive gravel roads or hikingtrails. The Deschutes River is in the 1% of our nation’s rivers to be federallydesignated as a wild & scenic river. This designation has protected the land alongthe river from development. On a few of our floats you will see a couple of cabinsalong the river, but the majority of what you will experience is pure wilderness.
OREGON'S MOST REMOTE WILD STEELHEAD FISHERYThe John Day River is the longest free-flowing undammed river west of thecontinental divide. This river is wild and remote, boasting the longest stretch ofdesignated Wild & Scenic River in the nation. Over 150 miles of the John Day Riverare roadless and there are only a handful of places to launch boats.Located about 30 miles due east of the Deschutes River, the John Day River flowsnorth through a desert canyon to its confluence with the Columbia River. The landalong the river is majority owned bylarge private wheat and cattle ranches, most of which are measured in thetens of thousands of acres. There areno towns or houses or roads along theriver for mile after mile after mile.Motorized boats are not allowed, nor isthere any way to access the river withany sort of vehicle, including aircraft. The only way to see vast stretches ofthe John Day is to float the river andthis float is about as remote as you canget in North America. The John Day is well known as a wonderful smallmouth bass fishery in the summertime and the river can be quite busy during June and July when most people floatand camp. What most people don’t know about the John Day is that it hosts thelargest return of wild summer steelhead in North America. Water levels dictatewhen the steelhead will be able to begin their upstream migration, and water isscarce in the desert until about mid-October. We guide overnight camp float tripsfor steelhead on the John Day from mid-October through early December and daysteelhead floats from December through February. THE MOST EXCLUSIVE RANCH FISHING IN CENTRAL OREGONGRASS VALLEYWe have nine lakes on a private ranch near Grass Valley - which is about a 25minute drive from our fly shop. The lakes range in size from a couple of acres to25 acres, all very manageable in a float tube or pontoon boat. The insect hatchesare thick on these lakes, and the rainbow trout that live here are eager to grab dryflies. In March and April the lakes are easily fished from shore by wading theedges. By May and June the weeds in the shallows make it too difficult to shorefish, but a pontoon boat or float tube will put you in good water all day long. A fewof our Grass Valley lakes are open year-round.BADGER CREEK MEADOWSWe have two spring-fed lakes in a canyon setting adjacent to Badger Creek nearTygh Valley. These are small lakes, 2-5 acres, which hold healthy fat rainbows. Theponderosa pine forest and basalt cliffs that ring the lakes provide a stunningsetting for a day of fly fishing. A four wheel drive is required to access this ranch. CALL US 7 DAYS A WEEK - 541-395-0995 www.deschutesangler.com
