SECRETARY CARDONA LOCAL FOOD DEALS WEST SUNRISE DENTAL 2 3 4-5 9 www.thestudentauthority.com BROWARD COUNTY LED THE NATION College students are back on campus, bracing for another semester amid the spread of the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus. Broward County led the nation in confirmed COVID-19 admissions from Aug. 3-9, metrics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services show. With recent increases in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in children, some experts are concerned that the Delta variant may cause more severe illness in kids than previous variants.. Our governor is against a mask mandate and has made this statement “Would I rather have 5,000 cases among 20-year-olds or 500 cases among seniors? I would rather have the younger.” BROWARD COUNTY LED THE NATION FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. - This return to school season is like no other. Schools must be prepared to protect children from COVID-19, while also addressing a wide ar- ray of other pandemic-related challenges returning students are facing,” said CDC Di- rector Rochelle P. Walensky, MD, MPH. “In addition to keeping students safe from COVID-19, they will need to provide safe and supportive school environments to pro- mote student well-being and recovery.” CDC offers these health tips that will make for a successful school year for students, teachers, school staff and their families. Take COVID-19 seriously. Students benefit from in-person learning and safely return- ing to in-person instruction in the fall 2021 is a priority. CDC has COVID-19 specific guidance for K-12 schools and Colleges and Universities. Mental health is important to the learning process. CDC data shows that the pandemic has created significant stress and trauma for children, adolescents, and families. Schools can help promote student well-being with CDC evidence-based strategies like establishing safe and supportive school environments and referring students to appro- priate mental and physical health services. Routine vaccinations save lives. Getting re- quired vaccines can help protect children and teens as they grow into adulthood. Mak- ing sure children get vaccinated is one of the most important things parents can do Washing hands stops germs. Handwashing with soap and water is one of the best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick, and prevent the spread of colds, flu, and oth- er diseases to others. Eat well, be active, and get enough sleep. Make sure children drink plenty of water, limit sugary drinks, and practice healthy eating at home and school to help achieve and maintain a healthy weight and to support brain development and healthy growth. It’s also important to help kids get the recommended 60 minutes or more of daily phys- ical activity, as well as the right amount of sleep every night. However, youth also re- port using cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, and other tobacco products. Tobacco products contain nicotine which is highly addictive and can harm the developing ado- lescent brain – specifically the areas of the brain that are responsible for learning, memory, and attention.zor help to quit, you can talk with your healthcare provider or visit CDC.gov/quit. FOR BROWARD STUDENTS BY BROWARD STUDENTS College Students Support Campus COVID-19 Vaccine and Mask Mandates, New Survey by TimelyMD Finds A majority of students also report feeling more stressed than they did a year ago. As college students return to campus for the fall semester, a majority said they plan to wear masks and take other steps to protect themselves from COVID-19 and help reduce their grow- ing anxiety levels brought on by the pandemic. With the Delta variant threatening their hopes for a more “normal” semester, most students also said they’re feeling a lot more stress now than they did a year ago, according to new survey re- sults released today by TimelyMD, the leading telehealth company focused on higher education. “College students typically return to campus refreshed after summer break and instead are feeling exhausted. After everything they’ve been through, many students simply cannot flip a switch to focus on orientation and registration,” said Seli Fakorzi, Director of Mental Health Operations at TimelyMD. “The survey results mirror what we’re hearing directly from students: they are eager to be back on campus, but they are struggling with the unknown and feeling burned out before classes even begin. Flexibility will be key to retaining them and making sure they are successful,” she said. Here are key findings from the online survey of more than 1,000 college students conducted last week: 70% of students enrolled at institutions that do not have mask mandates in place said they plan to wear a face mask on campus anyway. More than one-third (35%) said they’ll always wear a mask in indoor public spaces. More than 20% said they’ll mask up while they’re in class or in academic buildings (21%). Only one in ten (10%) said they will never wear a mask. Students who attend institutions with mask and vaccine mandates overwhelmingly support these protective measures. In both instances, more than 80% are in favor of these requirements (87% for mask mandates and 85% for vaccine mandates). For those whose campuses do not have mandates in place, slightly more than half (55%) said they wish their campuses required masks and/or COVID-19 vaccines. Four out of five students (82%) who attend institutions that require COVID-19 shots were already vaccinated or were planning to get vaccinated when their campus put that requirement in place. Fewer than 5% sought an exemption and less than 1% of survey respondents said they submitted a fake vaccine card. The TimelyMD survey also found that students are growing more stressed and anxious amid a pandemic that shows no sign of abating: Three-quarters (77%) of students said the pandemic and the new COVID-19 variants have height- ened their levels of emotional distress and anxiety. Six in 10 (60%) are feeling even more stress and anxiety than they did a year ago. College students are most concerned about the effect the COVID-19 pandemic will have on their social lives (64%). Other top stress-inducing factors are impacts on physical health (61%), the quality of education (54%), their finances (45%) and their ability to enjoy everything their campus has to offer (40%). Nearly three out of four (72%) said they intend to seek some kind of emotional support from friends, family, campus counselors or professional health specialists to help manage stress and anxiety during the academic year. Students said the No. 1 thing campuses can do to support their students right now is provide more virtual services focused on their health and well-being, such as telehealth and teletherapy (48%). They also would like to see more remote social support (45%) and increased academic support (41%). “We know healthy students are engaged students,” said Fakorzi. “Now more than ever, student well-being requires colleges and universities to get creative and stay that way — that’s the ‘new normal.’” BROWARD COUNTY LED THE NATION CONTINUED FROM COVER Stay cool in the heat. With above average temperatures in multiple parts of the country, it is im- portant to limit outdoor activity during the middle of the day when the sun is hottest. Wear and re- apply sunscreen, seek shade, drink plenty of water, and know how to prevent heat-related illness in athletes. Wear helmets and protect your head. Children and adolescents can get a concussion in any number of school settings ranging from school sports activities to the hallway, the play- ground, and even the cafeteria. Get information on preventing and responding to concussions and supporting students when they return to school after a concussion. Help children with special health care needs. The pandemic can present unique challenges for children with special health care needs. CDC has tips for helping these children make the transition back to the classroom. Healthy students are better learners. Following these health tips can lead students to a successful and healthy school year. For additional information on health and learning, visit CDC’s Healthy Schools site and CDC’s adolescent health page to learn why schools are the right place for a healthy start.

STUDENT NEWS BACK TO SCHOOL 39 Secretary Cardona Tells Alachua and Broward County School Districts: \"We stand with you\" U.S. Department of Education \"The Biden Administration is fully committed to a safe and healthy return to in-person learning for all students this fall. It is deeply troubling to see state leaders putting politics ahead of the health and safety of our students, and that instead of sup- porting our educators for doing the right thing, state leaders are trying to punish them. This week, the President asked me to do everything I can to help protect our nation's students and support the local leaders who are fighting for them. Let me reiterate: we stand ready to assist any district facing repercussions for imposing CDC-recommended COVID-19 prevention strategies that will protect the health and safety of students, educators, and staff. To that end, we've also made clear to district leaders that any financial penalties imposed by the state can be addressed immediately using CARES, CRRSA, or American Rescue Plan funds. Today, I also spoke directly to the Superinten- dents of Broward and Alachua County schools to reassure them that the President and his Admin- istration stand with them and with all educators who put student and staff health and education first.\" Background As outlined in the Secretar- y's letter to Florida state lead- ers, the Department of Education considers these funds are part of \"activities that are necessary to maintain the operation of and con- tinuity of services in local educa- tional agencies and continuing to employ existing staff of the local educational agency\" and an allow- able use of CARES, CRRSA, and American Rescue Plan funds. The Secretary spoke with Superin- tendent Dr. Vickie Cartwright from Broward County, and Superinten- dent Dr. Carlee Simon from Ala- chua County today and reiterated the Administration's support for dedicated educators like them doing the right thing to protect student, educator, and staff safety. He discussed how they can and should use federal pandemic relief funds to ad- dress any financial penalties levied against their districts as a result of them using CDC-recommended COVID-19 prevention strategies to protect the health and safety of their school communities. He also expressed disappointment in state leaders choosing to penalize educato rs at the time when they need the most support.
