FROM CUBA TO BROWARD Born and raised in Havana, Cuba, his passion for the arts awoke early during his childhood. He surrounded himself with friends who ap- preciated painting and spent a lot of his time creating illustrative drawings. In addition, his mom worked in a Historic Art Museum which spiraled his love of art and helped his decision to be an artist when he grew up. MASTER BARBAMEET THE ARTIST KNOWN AS: People may have doubted him on his way up, but he always believed in himself and worked hard to rise above and reach his dreams of being a professional tattoo artist and studio owner. His State of the Art Tattoo Studio and Art Gallery is Located in the Heart of Coral Springs on Sample Rd a few steps from Coral Springs city hall. Continued on Page 4. #2 Spring Break destination in '19, Fort Lauderdale FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Feb 2020) – Fort Lauderdale is preparing for another crazy year. Still popular over Spring Break, the kids are less rowdy today and more into tanning time. But that's how it all started back in the 60s. The college kids who visit now are more likely to be crashing at grandma‘s condo, rather than 10 to a room at the Holiday Inn. The weather and sunshine are the most pre- dictably pleasant of anywhere in Florida, and the Elbo Room remains a popular focal point of beach activity. While ―The Strip‖ can still hold its own, the current crowds are just as likely dispersed onto neighboring beaches in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Pompano Beach, Hollywood and Deerfield Beach. By day, thousands gravitate to the warm beaches along A1A for the biggest open Spring Break party anywhere. Across the street from the shore, open air venues like Rock Bar and Elbo Room are jammed throughout the day with Spring Break food and drink specials. At night Fort Lauderdale comes alive as thousands flock to America's Backyard Sway for our famous Spring Break parties. The perfect combination of warm sun, cold drinks, and America's best party scene makes Fort Lauderdale the perfect Spring Break Destination. This years headquarter hotel, the B Ocean provides the perfect combination of beachfront location and a short walk to the crazy daytime scene. Enjoy daily drink specials, poolside music. This is the only resort with private beach, lounge chairs and a beachfront pool. Right across from the beach, A1A is lined with bars to cool of and grab a drink. Grab a beer at Blondies Sports bar and float in and out of different spots along the strip. Have a few giant cocktails at Rock Bar or get a Fishbowl at Lulus. Or just take a dip in the warm Atlantic Ocean or go 5 min North to ride jet Skis at Dr Jet Ski.

BROWARD NEWS MARCH 3 The Swap Shop: A Broward County Landmark The Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop is a 14-screen drive-in theater in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, that doubles as the largest drive-in and largest daily flea market in the world. Local broadcast adver- tising states it to be Florida's second-biggest tourist attraction and the largest tourist attraction in the South Florida metropolitan area. From 1989-2006 the Hanneford Family Circus performed daily (except Tuesdays) in the Swap Shop food court, entertaining the roughly 12 million people who visit each year. On November 22, 1963, Betty and Preston Henn opened the Thunderbird Drive-in Theater. In the beginning, there was one screen (still in use today as Screen 9)— and a reputation for showing adult movies, which concerned passing motorists. Initially the parking lot was divided by a fence to divide the white customers from the African American customers. After a 1966 trip to the American West Coast, Henn decided to add a flea market, allowing the region to have a collective rummage sale and encouraging the start of many small businesses in southeastern Florida. The addition ushered in a period of expansion (to 11 screens by 1980) and increased popularity. An enclosed food court was added in 1979; a decade later, a stage was added and the food court was enclosed and air conditioned. Initially, the circus shared the stage with 1960s and 1970s pop and country acts, most notably K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn and Three Dog Night. Expansion continued into the 1990s, when Screens 12 and 13 were put into use, and into 2005, when the former Thunderbird Drive-in started projecting onto its fourteenth screen. On October 24, 2005 hurricane Wilma damaged several of the screens; currently only 13 of the 14 are in use. In addition to the Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop, the Henns own and operate two others, the Margate Swap Shop (which closed in 2007), the Lake Worth Swap Shop and Drive-in and Tampa Fun-Lan Swap Shop and Drive-in. I strive to create a piece of art unique to each customer and which they will be happy with. Why should a customer choose your business? Because of the quality work provided. The interest is not about getting the work done quickly. We provide a clean work area. The environment is inviting and bright. We provide a calm, peaceful and relaxed space for sessions. Our concept is also about creating a family environment. Even the waiting area is designed for relaxation, and all ties into the theme of the studio, which is about water. This is represented by the blue color scheme throughout the stu- dio. What areas do you serve? Coral Springs since we are located here, but clientele comes from all over the world. I am working on a customer from England right now who sought me out specifically My reputation speaks for itself. What are you the most proud of? Community Spotlight Exploring Your Solutions with Ashley aka “Your Favorite Therapist.” Thank you for checking out my first post! Some would say that the key to happiness is found inside you? Well, if that is true, then as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, I would serve as your GPS. Whether you find yourself in a dead-end or a detour, I take pride in creat- ing individualized care, which will uncover optimal solutions within your journey. By adopting a client-centered/multidisciplinary approach, I have the flexibility of utilizing innovative therapy techniques along with other theoretical approaches. Are you going through a horrific breakup, starting a new career path or major, struggling with procrastination, depression, anxiety, addiction, trauma, or self-esteem issues? If so, I work with people of all ages who are battling with life transitions. I realized that I had a gift very early on. Almost every day, while being a student worker at Broward College or employee at NSU‘s Enrollment and Student Services Department, I found myself unintentionally becoming a guiding light for peo- ple in their darkest times. Several college students used to call me their therapist after spilling their heart out at my work station (college is stressful!) But, when I looked in the mirror, I couldn‘t see a therapist. As a young African American woman, I was not what a therapist was portrayed as in the media. I always thought a therapist was an old Caucasian male behind a desk asking people in response to every comment... ―hmmm, so how does that make you feel?‖ As a young Haitian American woman and broke college student, counseling seemed unfeasible to me growing up. And, like Taraji P. Henson bravely said, ―African Americans are like unicorns‖ in this field. In my culture, as well as several Ashley St. Hilaire, LMHC other Caribbean cultures, we are taught not to talk to about our problems. Our secrets become a pill we swallow, mak- YOUR FAVORITE THRAPIST ing victims more likely to traumatized or re-victimized. Prayer is the most likely given solution. And if you can‘t pray the problem out…you throw hands! Choosing therapy first means admitting you have a problem. This can be scary for several people who have adopted unhealthy coping skills and have to challenge systems they have strongly believed in for years. I chose to pursue the counseling profession because I wanted to make therapy more plausible for people going through life transitions, especially young adults. I strive to help in the battle of destroying the stigma associated with seeking therapy. People should no longer feel weak or guilty for asking for support. I realize how important mental health is needed in our communities today. Therefore, I am offering 50% off counseling services for col- lege students. Seeing someone push past their insecurities, heal from generational trauma, and break mental barriers without dropping out of college is what drives me to want to do more for my community. Last year, I founded my private practice, Exploring Your Solu- tions, LLC. I specialize in developing a nonjudgmental understanding of your current path, as I guide you on finding alternative ways to steer toward a brighter future.
