FOR BROWARD STUDENTS BY BROWARD STUDENTS ASPEN INSTITUTE RECOGNIZES BROWARD COLLEGE AS FINALIST WITH DISTINCTION IN 2021 ASPEN PRIZE WASHINGTON, D.C., May 18, 2021 — Today, Broward College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was recognized in a virtual award ceremo- ny with over a thousand viewers, as one of the top community colleges nationally. It won $100,000 and the honor of Finalist with Distinction in the 2021 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. The $1 million Aspen Prize, awarded every two years since 2011, recognizes outstanding institutions selected from more than 1,000 community colleges nationwide. The Aspen Prize assesses performance in six areas: teaching and learning, certificate and degree completion, transfer and bachelor’s attainment, workforce success, equity in access and success for students of color and students from low-income backgrounds, and leadership and institutional culture. “It is an honor to be selected as a Finalist with Distinction from more than 1,000 peer insti- tutions across the nation evaluated for this prize,\" said Broward College President Gregory Adam Haile, J.D. \"This recognition as a Finalist with Distinction is a community prize. Thanks to our trustees, faculty, and staff, as well as the donors and partners in the public and private sectors who support our work. Of course, our highest praise goes to our stu- dents – this is their achievement. I also want to thank Josh Wyner and his team at Aspen's College Excellence Program for pushing community colleges to the forefront of national efforts to empower our students, and thereby enhancing our nation's economic future.” Broward College is one of the largest community colleges in the nation, serving 62,000 stu- dents in South Florida. Sixty-eight percent of students are students of color, while 49 per- cent receive federal Pell Grants because of financial need. Graduation and transfer rates for students of color and student from low-income backgrounds each exceed the national average by 4 percentage points. Of BC students who transfer, 52 percent complete a bachelor’s within six years; that’s 8 points above the national average. “Broward College has made an impressive commitment to expanding access for those of- ten furthest from opportunity in Fort Lauderdale,” said Linda Perlstein, director of Aspen’s College Excellence Program. “And once students are in the door, it sets a remarkable ex- ample for how a community college can help students figure out their goals and progress toward them.” The Aspen Prize winner, Finalists with Distinction, and Rising Star were announced today by Aspen Prize jury co-chairs Freeman Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and Ruth Williams-Brinkley, president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Mid-Atlantic States. They led a distinguished jury of education, business, and non- profit leaders to select the top colleges—part of a rigorous, 18-month review process that included the examination of extensive data on performance and improvements. “The college has been a national exemplar in guided pathways—designing clear, struc- tured paths for students through to a bachelor’s degree, and aligning advising and other systems to make it hard to fall through the cracks,” Williams-Brinkley said in announcing the award. “In recent years, Broward College has made it a top priority to build new, inno- vative partnerships”—its Broward UP initiative—\"to expand access and pathways to col- lege and careers for people in the city’s highest-poverty neighborhoods.” Broward College was also an Aspen Prize Finalist with Distinction in 2017 and a finalist in 2015 and 2019. In offering congratulations to the Aspen Prize finalists today, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said, “Each of your institutions is helping to transform the lives of a diverse and deserving group of students. … This year’s finalists are an impressive roster of innova- tive and inclusive institutions that put student success at the core of all they do.” The Aspen Prize is generously funded by Ascendium Education Group, Joyce Foundation, and Siemens Foundation. The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program aims to advance higher education prac- tices, policies, and leadership that significantly improve student outcomes, especially for the growing population of students of color and students from low-income backgrounds on American campuses. STUDENT NEWS SUMMER 2021 37 BROWARD COLLEGE CELEBRATED GRADUATES WITH GRAD FEST AND VIRTUAL COMMENCEMENT Below are a few stories of notable May 2021 graduates: Mashava Charles-Piggott The timing of this commencement could not have had greater significance for the 34-year- old wife, mother, and now college graduate as it came hours before Mother's Day and marked her transition to working on her future occupation, which was inspired by her experi- ence of motherhood. After dropping out of high school, Mashava held a job she wasn't hap- py with and knew she needed to work toward her goal. Since then, she has gotten married, accepted a full-time position with a local airline, had a child, and graduated from Broward College with an Associate of Arts (general studies). Motivated by her love for children and her passion for caring for her 18-month-old son, she will begin classes at Nova Southeast- ern University. She is determined to work toward a bachelor's degree in the medical sonog- raphy program. Genica Da Silva Rosa Many students face obstacles in college, but a brain aneurism and emergency surgeries could not have been predicted for 26-year-old international student Genica Da Silva Rosa. After battling 18 painful days in the hospital and life-saving surgery with no family around in June 2020, she was inspired by her mother and persisted in returning to her coursework. She began to volunteer on campus and was named student government campus president. She is grateful to be alive and to have graduated this spring with an associate degree fo- cused on Business Administration. She will continue toward her dream of becoming an international businesswoman by pursuing a bachelor's degree at Florida International University Noah MacDonald At 20 years old, Noah MacDonald graduated this semester with his Associate of Arts (general studies) and a ton of experience. Noah has been a full- time student while actively participating in several extracurricular activities. He joined the Distinction Society, became a student ambassador, was a work-study student in the Student Life department, and participated in the Safe Place club, which focuses on mental health. Although it could be over- whelming at times, Noah persevered. He was selected as a finalist for the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke scholarship, which awards financial support to high-achieving students who show determination and commitment toward their educational goals. He will continue on his educational journey pursu- ing a bachelor's degree in English Literature at the University of Central Florida. Rosean Monteith Rosean Monteith is the first in his family to reach an incredible achievement, graduating from college. Rosean faced many challenges throughout his journey, including homelessness and mental health struggles in his late teens. The experiences forced him to grow up quickly, and despite it all, he continued through high school and on to Broward College. This inspired him to work toward his Associate of Arts with a focus on Social Work. His journey will continue at Florida Atlantic University, where he will pursue a degree in Public Management.

SPINERITE CHIROPRACTIC SpineRite Chiropractic is located in Coral Spings, just off Sample Rd. We recently caught up with Dr. Weston, a South Florida native, to find out the secret to their success and popularity within the community. If you have never had a chiropractic adjustment before, you will never know how much you actually need one. Aches or pain in your neck or your back, however slight can be written off to sitting for too long, sleeping in the wrong position and over time we just come to deal with and live with these discomforts. Most people do not realize that these said discomforts have such a dramatic impact on their quality of life and that this can easily be managed. Spinerite Chiropractic is located in Coral Springs on Sample Rd. We recently sat down with Dr. Daniel Weston to learn a little more about his practice and his goal of ensuring that all his patients “Move Rite, Feel Rite, SpineRite” Dr. Weston grew up in South Florida and is an Alumni of Nova University, in Da- vie, Florida, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. He is very char- ismatic and filled with energy and you will instantly feel as if you have known him all your life. After years of being employed in different positions and not feeling fulfilled, he decided to go to graduate school to become a doctor. After re-connecting with his friend from college, whom had chronic neck pain and was able to find relief through a chiropractor, Dr. Weston decided to pursue a ca- reer in chiropractic care. What sets you apart from other Chiropractors? “Everyone’s body and spine is different and has a different need so I don't put them on some outrageous crazy treatment plan just for financial gain. I get a lot of fulfillment in what I do and I try to be as trustworthy and integrity driven as possible” What should a patient expect on their first visit? “When a patient comes in, the first thing I’ll do is go through the prescreening process with them. This entails asking what their symptoms are, where they are experiencing pain or any other symptoms; based on whatever they tell me we go further in depth, and I usually ask if they have ever seen a chiropractor before. This is just to kind of get a good history of what their situation is, and what they may need. I also have them go through different ranges of motion with their neck, back, to bend over touch toes just to kind of get an idea or create a base- line. After that everything's a factor it could be age could be height, could be his- tory of back pain or if they had a car accident in the past, everything can change a little bit as far as the treatment plan goes. Some people need a couple adjustments, and some people need one adjustment every two weeks, while some once per month. Based on clinical judgment I use all of these factors to make that determination regarding their treat- ment plan”. Do you have a tagline that summarizes your practice? “It's all about quality of life and being able to live your life to its most optimal form.” If your spine is not align properly you will have stiffness you will have tension throughout the spine and if you've never been adjusted before you would not even know the difference on what that feels like so once you get adjusted for the first time then you can really be more in tune with your body and you will see that at some point you start tensing up and if you sit down for a living, things will just tighten up more frequently than others unless you're doing a stretch routine that can really be a game changer for you. Other than that, adjustments will really help your quality of life, but as far as the tagline goes I have my mantra which is “Move Rite, Feel Rite, SpineRite” If you are able to move properly that means you can feel well and it all happens here at SpineRite.
