History The Church of the Good Shepherd was officially renamed in 2006 from several previously merged Episcopal congregations, including St. Peters by the Sea, St. Johns, Christ Church, and St. Peter’s. The buildings were erected shortly after acquisition of the property in 1968. Our parishioners are largely made up of those living in West Ashley, with a majority being of middle class means. Membership has oscillated between 60 and 120 people, with a current average Sunday attendance of 80 people. In the last decade we have had two rectors: The Rev. Shay Gaillard and the Rev. Dr. Donnie McDaniel. Fr. Shay was instrumental in creating the Day School program, which now blesses 82 children, their families, and the teachers who work there. Fr. Shay also oversaw construction of a new playground and the addition of the current narthex and bell tower, which included bathroom renovations and the addition of a prayer room. The prayer room has since become an additional Day School space as the program has grown. Worship times were also updated twice to reflect our vision and resources, and bibles were put in every pew. During Fr. Donnie’s three years, he worked on the foundation of the church by developing the vestry leadership and their responsibility as individual team leaders to grow congregant participation in various teams. These teams, run by Vestry members, now contribute to the overall running of our church in myriad ways, and you can read more about them in the Parish Life section of this profile. Fr. Donnie also worked diligently on updating budgets, organizing finances, and developing a staff structure that would help sustain a church of our size and calling in this place. Throughout the last decade the congregation has developed into a close, tight-knit group, resembling the characteristics of a true parish church. God has blessed this church at critical moments with the right leadership who had the necessary gifts for each season, to fulfill his vision for this place. Though we are eager to see our parish membership grow, it has stabilized. Our finances are in the black and we are poised to support the next level of growth. this triptych of marble plaques hangs in our southern courtyard and tells parts of the story of the early beginnings of the churches that would become Good Shepherd Church of the Good Shepherd 4 Parish Profile 2019

Leadership: Vestry Vestry members are responsible for the vision, The 2019 Vestry leadership, and policies of the Church of the Good Shepherd. The vestry is comprised of the rector and ten elected church members, who each serve staggered three-year terms. Good Shepherd tradition holds that church members vote for potential vestry persons from a slate of nominated individuals at our annual January congregational meeting. The vestry meets once per month, and there is an annual vestry/staff retreat. Each vestry member serves on at least one of our Teams, which meet on a regular rotation and lead various aspects of church and ministry life. Our current vestry represents parishioners from both our Left to right: Jeanne Rodick, Roddy Traxler, John Wall, regular weekly services, and they are of a variety Sarah Margaret Rosling, Whit McGreevy (Sr. Warden), Lauren Seben, of ages and experience levels. Marcus Taylor, Kits Jones, Billy Steen (Jr. Warden), Christie Adams Parish Life at Good Shepherd The Church of the Good Shepherd strives to equip everyone to spread the Gospel in every aspect of daily life. We encourage each member, new or experienced, to share his or her unique gifts through multiple in-church ministries as well as fellowship outside of Sunday services. Church-based ministry opportunities include altar guild, Eucharistic ministers, lay deacons, music ministry, prayer ministry, greeters, powerpoint leaders, Children’s Church (Kids’ Time), and after-service refreshments. These volunteers share their talents at Good Shepherd for two worship services on Sunday at 9am and 10:30am. Member volunteer participation in the flow of the service is critical to the health of the church. our children participate in our services by we love praying together, playing together, presenting the elements and passing the alms bowls and of course we love eating together, too! Parish Life at Good Shepherd, ctd. Teams Each vestry member leads a specific ministry team made up of parishioners. These teams enable our members to become involved in much more than Sunday worship. Volunteering on a team molds their personal commitment to the church and gives them ownership while building relationships through community and fellowship, letting God work in them and through them. This has been proven successful by our event and team participation continuing to increase, children’s ministry continuing to grow, and our continuing to acquire new volunteers simply through a team ask. Parish Life Team: Plans and organizes all church- wide events Member Care Team: Maintains communication with the sick and shut-ins, providing communion and companionship. Springs into action in times of need such as funerals, weddings, and births. Building and Grounds Team: Manages the maintenance and improvements of facilities, everyone pitches in at our quarterly workdays, including organizing parish workdays and put on by the Building & Grounds Team overseeing landscaping needs. Family Ministries Team: Serves as the Board for the Day School and oversees MOPS and children’s ministry. Finance Team: Creates, monitors and reports on parish budget and oversees the daily expenses of the church Discipleship: Aims to identify where there are needs for discipleship in our church community, support those efforts as they move forward, and support and encourage the leadership in those efforts. our Parish Life Team always does a great job planning our events and making them beautiful, like they did here for our Mardi Gras celebration Community Groups Parishioners are encouraged to participate in Community groups as a way to build deeper relationships with one another while learning the Word of God through Bible studies, book series, fellowship, and more. Meetings usually occur during the week and details can be found in our seasonal parish informational booklet. Although there are a few established groups, our goal is 100% participation to foster true connectivity and spiritual growth. the children at a community group event Church of the Good Shepherd 8 Parish Profile 2019

Parish Life at Good Shepherd, ctd. MOPS & MOMSnext MOPS/MOMSnext is a program that serves to encourage and support moms during the incredible, but frequently difficult seasons of raising kiddos. The goal of this ministry is to shine the light of Jesus in a real, relatable way to mamas who may not know Him yet. MOPS serves moms from pregnancy through to the time their youngest child is in kindergarten. MOMSnext serves mamas once they’re out of the preschool stage. Our meetings aim to achieve these purposes of support and encouragement by providing a place to meet moms where they are and helping them build real relationships with women in a similar season of life. Each year MOPS International curates a theme and creates a series of “video stories” by different authors and speakers based on that theme. Some of our meetings include those videos followed by discussion on the topic of the video, and other weeks we have speakers come in to give us encouragement or teach us something new. We may also play games or do a simple craft at meetings... it really just depends on the meeting; they’re all different! We also get together a few times each month outside of our regular meetings. This ministry has been a thriving addition to the offerings at Good Shepherd. We’ve grown from one mom on a mission to 39 mamas doing life together and loving one another well. Several of our MOPS moms have attended Good Shepherd on occasion and a few have joined the church. All of our mamas and their families benefit from the life-changing work we do. The group supports itself financially (though it runs its finances through the church’s account). The one exception that the church has paid for the charter renewal every year. We look forward to continuing to grow and flourish in partnership with the new leader at Church of the Good Shepherd! our MOPS group at their annual Galentine’s Day event the 2018-19 Day School teaching staff at Ladies’ Night Out, the annual fundraiser we host benefiting the Day School & MOPS Moving Forward Good Shepherd is known for its close relationships and parish family feel. Our hope is to continue this reputation with a pastor who sees the importance of ministry, not only within the church but in the surrounding community as well. With that being said, women’s, men’s, and children’s ministries are areas in which growth and opportunity truly exist. With the Day School serving over 80 kids, Good Shepherd has the opportunity to grow exponentially. The Family Ministry Team continues working hard to provide many with an opportunity to find an inviting, Gospel-centered worship in which all family members are spiritually fed. Because of these efforts, many families are attending our services! This means our younger population can only grow larger, giving children the opportunity to witness the power of the Gospel through our multi-generational members as well as worship services. Therefore, men’s, women’s, and children’s ministries are imperative for our parish life. Church of the Good Shepherd 9 Parish Profile 2019

Worship at Good Shepherd Good Shepherd’s worship services follow the liturgy of The Book of Common Prayer. We glorify God in Jesus Christ following Rite I at the traditional 9 a.m. service, and Rite II utilizing a projector at the contemporary 10:30 a.m. service. The music at the traditional service is predominantly hymns led by our organist, and the music at the contemporary service is predominantly praise music led by our praise team on guitar and keyboard. All ages are encouraged to participate in each we love worshiping at Camp St Christopher service. Children are a joyous and vocal part of during our Beach Sunday celebration every year the 10:30 a.m. service, presenting the elements and passing the alms bowls. During this service, the children receive an age-appropriate teaching at Kids’ Time in Layman’s Hall, which takes place during the reading of Scripture and the Sermon. Following each Sunday service there are light refreshments and fellowship in the narthex. We are blessed to have a Contemplative Worship and Holy Communion Service on Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. to serve those who work and those who are unable to attend Sunday worship. our altar decorated with poinsettias for Christmas Eve What does our congregation say about Good Shepherd? “Good Shepherd is an amazing place that has been so instrumental in our family’s spiritual life, friendships, and well being. The primary challenge for Good Shepherd is dwindling regular attendance so a rector who can sustain the beautiful dynamic of community while also growing that community for God’s glory will be key.” “We are ready for God to do something big! He is definitely at work, but I think many of us feel there is something missing, some final puzzle piece waiting to fall into place for our church’s impact to greatly expand! I am praying for the right leader to come along and help identify where the Spirit is leading us and how we can accomplish even more good work God has for us as a parish.” “We are doing well. God is working a wonder here. The Day School is thriving, by the grace of God, and the church is maintaining. We are ready for God to lead to us an outgoing pastor, an inspired preacher, a true spiritual leader!” “I feel like Good Shepherd has been right on the edge of major growth and seeing its vision of reaching our neighbors come to fruition for some time now. We are all so ready to see that happen! I pray we will find a rector who is willing to jump in quickly and challenge us to reach those around us while helping spur current members to grow individually in their faith.” Church of the Good Shepherd 10 Parish Profile 2019

Good Shepherd Day School Good Shepherd Day School is different from other area preschools in that our church views it as an integral part of our Parish Life. This half-day program is not a separate entity simply occupying our campus. Rather, it is a critical ministry through which we are engaged in reciprocal blessings. Students and teachers display their gifts of songs, crafts, and who they each are during special worship and fellowship events throughout the school year. Before each school year, we invite the Day School students love to sing for their parents at Day School Staff to worship with us and receive several assemblies throughout the year our thanks and prayers. During the school year, our members are classroom guests, who share unique gifts and work to establish supportive relationships with teachers, students, and families. Our Rector conducts a once-a-week chapel service in the Sanctuary. We intentionally design all these interactions as a way to further our Mission and Vision. The Day School welcomes children ages 18 mos., 2, 3, & 4 years of age. We believe that all children are precious in His sight, and we are committed to fostering the development of world-changing children through the knowledge and grace of God some students meeting baby chicks during the Easter season the Father, His son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Our lead teachers have degrees in Elementary Education or many years of experience in an Early Childhood setting. Assistant teachers are Good seasoned professionals. All staff pass background checks, are First Aid and CPR certified, and have Shepherd completed the Diocese of South Carolina’s child abuse awareness program called Safeguarding Day School God’s Children. All teachers participate in professional development workshops yearly. The teaching staff is united by one common thread – our love of the Lord and our willingness to serve His children to the best of our ability, with His help. The Good Shepherd Day School mission is to display the love of Christ through grace-centered relationships with students, parents, and teachers by providing a nurturing, safe, and developmentally appropriate environment that allows children to grow socially, emotionally, spiritually, and academically. With these skills, we believe our children will grow to be confident leaders in their communities, families, and churches. Church of the Good Shepherd 11 Parish Profile 2019

Our Finances & Stewardship The last five years have included the end of a lengthy rectorship and the start of a new one. This time of transition saw our finances in disarray with heavy commitments to full time staffing and a decline in regular attendance and giving. Through the hard work of our previous rector, the balance sheet, budget, and church structure have stabilized and a baseline was created in which to continue growth. Giving, while not meeting our potential, has balanced out and budgets have been adjusted accordingly. Church membership has stabilized and is primed for rapid growth. While the last years have been challenging, we have been able to successfully weather dry giving periods and allocate significant capital to improving our facilities which are still in much need of improvement. Each year Good Shepherd sends out pledge cards to our church community asking for not only financial commitments but also membership commitments. Good Shepherd currently has 60 pledges with an average combined Sunday attendance of 80. The Day School has been a blessing in many ways, including providing revenue beyond its own direct expenses to the church’s finances. For the past few years, operational expenses have been kept to a minimum and the budget has been tight. We have unfortunately suspended our 10% tithe of pledged and non-pledged income to the Diocese for the time being and hope to change this. We carry no debt on the church buildings but have a line of credit currently at $44,474. The last two calendar years, we have ended the year in the black and currently have a twelve month projected budget showing a positive net income with a gross income of $545,408. We expect our church financial picture is similar to many other churches in the area, but are confident that the current parishioners are committed to growing, and this can be done effectively because the financial foundation has been solidly formed. an artist’s rendering of our building, from the plans when we add on the narthex Church of the Good Shepherd 12 Parish Profile 2019
