Using the Rite 2 Eucharistic Prayer from The Book of Common Prayer, it includes music from The Hymnal 1982 with organ, congregation, and occasional special guest musicians. The service lasts about an hour. Childcare is not available. Sunday 10:30am Contemporary Service This is a vibrant and contemporary service with great guitar led worship music. In this service, our words and structure come from worship services from across the globe. Dress is casual, and childcare is available along with our Kid’s Time worship. Wednesday 12:15pm Mid-Week Service This is a Rite I service that is quiet and reflective. Childcare is not available. This is a great opportunity to recharge your batteries during the middle of the week. 4

Why Are We Here? At Church of the Good Shepherd, we believe that God calls and equips every Christian for service in the church and the world. As a local church, we want to provide God’s people with the opportunities they need for both personal growth and for service to the wider community. We are in an interim season here at the Church of the Good Shepherd, as we begin the search process for a new Rector. However, we are a strong body of believers who want to carry forth the vision we feel God has for the Good Shepherd community. We will continue to work together to expand service opportunities and to direct the next phase of our life together under the interim leadership of The Rev. Edward T. (Ted) McNabb, Jr. This booklet is meant to serve as a guide to our opportunities and offerings in the coming year. If God is calling you to serve in some capacity, do not hesitate to contact the person in charge of any of these ministries. 5

Christian Formation The heart of Christian formation occurs each week in the regular preaching and hearing of God’s word as it is opened and given to the people in the context of worship. With that in mind, we will continue to partner with sister churches and the diocese to offer ways in which to enrich your walk with Christ. Watch for local and diocesan offerings in our weekly newsletter, Shepherd’s Voice or postings on our social media venues. 6

Community Groups Good Shepherd offers several community groups in different locations and we welcome your participation! These groups meet to dive deeper in their faiths, and they exist so that our community can study, pray, and stay connected with each other throughout the week. Community groups are richly rewarding, and community group members often say their members are like extended family. We currently have groups that meet in West Ashley, Park Circle, and James Island. If you are interested in joining a group or starting a group, please contact Whit McGreevy, Billy Steen, or the parish administrator and we’ll get you plugged in! 7

Women’s Groups Thursday Morning Bible Study at 9:30am This year the women will be meeting at the church in the Mellichamp Room each week. There will be assigned readings, discussion, intercessory prayer and hopefully a couple of outings. They will meet in the Mellichamp Room. Contact Elizabeth Harvey at [email protected] for questions. The Daughters of the King The Order of the Daughters of the King is a group of women who are communicants in the Anglican, Episcopal, Lutheran and Roman Catholic churches. The order was founded in 1885 by Margaret J. Franklin from the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in New York City. After a discernment period of study, women can become part of the order when they undertake a Rule of Life incorporating the Rule of Prayer and Rule of Service. As a Daughter, you pledge yourself to a life-long program of prayer, service and evangelism dedicated to the spread of Christ's kingdom and the strengthening of the spiritual life of her church. For women interested in finding out more, you may reach out to Catherine (Kits) Jones at [email protected]. MOPS & MOMSnext MOPS & MOMSnext are made up of a tribe of women from all walks of life who meet to encourage, support, & walk alongside one another through this beautiful, challenging, crazy journey called motherhood. MOPS serve moms from pregnancy through when their youngest child is in kindergarten. MOMSnext serves mamas once they're out of the preschool stage. Both groups meet 8

together on alternating Fridays throughout the school year. There is childcare for kiddos younger than school age at their meetings as well as coffee, brunch, speakers, devotions, & mentoring opportunities, and they also schedule regular playdates and moms' nights out throughout their year. If you're interested in making new connections and building bonds with other mamas, please contact the MOPS/MOMSnext program coordinator, Jeanne Rodick, at [email protected]. Diocesan Women’s Gatherings The women of the church are invited to attend any or all events hosted periodically throughout the year by the Diocesan Women's Ministry. Upcoming events will be communicated to our ladies and you can always visit the Diocesan website for activities. 9

Men’s Groups For more information contact Billy Steen [email protected] Wednesday Bible Study at 6:30am On Wednesday mornings at 6:30am, men gather from Good Shepherd and the community at the Variety Store at City Marina for a time of study and fellowship. Craig Bennett is the leader of this group. Wednesday Bible Study at 7:00am At 7:00am on Wednesdays, men gather in the Mellichamp Room for an hour of Bible study and fellowship. We are always working through a book of the Bible, but you do not have to wait for a time of transition to join us, you can dive in at any time! Men’s Retreats Periodic gatherings are hosted for men of all ages to build bonds of friendship and grow in their relationship with Christ. Events will be publicized in our newsletter and bulletins when scheduled. 10

Diocesan Men’s Gatherings The men of the church are invited to attend any or all events hosted periodically throughout the year by the Diocesan Men's Ministry. Upcoming events will be communicated to our men and you can always visit the Diocesan website for activities. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC 11

Family and Children There are many facets of children and families at Good Shepherd in addition to our Good Shepherd Day School. We are inspired by the words of Jesus himself when he instructs the Disciples to ‘let the children come to him’. We long for them to know Jesus. We want children to experience the profound love of God in Christ, to understand that they have been created for a specific and special purpose, and to know that even at a young age they can be free from the power of sin and death. Our goal is to partner with families in communicating and modeling these truths. Nursery Childcare is provided for infants up to preschool during the 10:30am service in the day school wing. We believe that even before children can walk or talk, they can experience the love of Christ and hear the Word. In our nursery, God’s very little ones will be blessed with caregivers who love Jesus and love children. NOTE: if you would like to have your little ones join you for communion, please pick them up during the Apostles Creed. Little Lambs During the 10:30am service we offer a great worship opportunity for those children who are in preschool through 3rd grade, but we are a little flexible with the max age. The children will begin the service with their families, then depart after the announcements and return during the Apostles Creed so that families may enjoy communion together. Be a leader or helper for Little Lambs. Contact Lauren Seben if you can help. 12

Youth We encourage older children and youth to participate fully in the life of our church by serving in worship and helping in various ministry roles where they can be discipled by other members and taking part in Diocesan youth events offered. Easter Egg Hunt Usually on the Saturday before Easter on the church grounds, we will have our annual community Easter egg hunt that includes doughnuts too! This is always a great event and an opportunity to share time with other families in the church, day school, and the surrounding community. This year it will be held on April 11, 2020. For more information contact: Sarah Margaret Rosling at [email protected] 13

Good Shepherd Day School Denyse Steen, Director [email protected] We now offer Early Drop Off from 8:00 - 8:45 am Our 2020-21 Fall Registration Opens January 29, 2020. Good Shepherd Day School is the primary outreach ministry of The Church of the Good Shepherd. It is a thriving and loving community where children are cared for and taught in a Christian environment. This is a half-day program that allows for three or five-day options in the younger classrooms. We offer classes for 18-month TOTS to 4-year old Pre-K. For fees and registration, visit our website or contact the Director. 14

Missions & Outreach For more information, contact our Parish Administrator [email protected] Dazz/Lowcountry Pregnancy Center Dazz is the Lowcountry Crisis Pregnancy Center’s office here in West Ashley. Their main mission is to counsel women in crisis and save the lives of babies. We work with them in many ways, but some of the most visible are the Lowcountry Walk for Life each fall and the baby bottle campaign near Mother’s Day each spring. We also sponsor a table at their annual banquet. If this is an area that you would like to serve, please get in contact with Mary Pat McGreevy at [email protected]. Tri-County Ministries Tri-County is the first point of contact for many people who find themselves in moments of crisis, joblessness or moments of need. With their staff and knowledge, they are a great way for us to partner with the most vulnerable in the community. We often collect items of food and clothing for them, especially around the holidays and during extreme weather. For more information, contact Sandy McEachern at [email protected]. 15

Local and International Missions We are engaged in missions locally and internationally to include support of missionaries, even involving one of our own members, along with our partnership with Jesus is the Resurrection Church in Mexico. Someone in the office can direct you to the best person to speak with regarding specific mission endeavors. 16

Member Care Contact: John Wall [email protected] Lay Eucharistic Ministers (LEM) Laity are trained to distribute Communion to those who are home- bound or in the hospital. Lay Eucharistic Ministers take the Sacrament to parishioners on a regular basis. They also respond to special requests from the clergy, including assistance with any reception to be held after a funeral at the church. Lay Deacons Lay Deacons are trained to assist the rector with worship services in reading the Gospel and providing communion, as well as, visiting and praying with parishioners in the hospital. Prayer Ministry Teams Prayer is the foundation that we build on daily, and we at Good Shepherd are committed to pray for our church family, our clergy, our country and its leadership. Service Prayer Team We offer prayer at the 9 and 10:30am service and holy days following communion. Two team members are available each Sunday by the hallway near the organ. If you believe you are called to a commitment of prayer, you can reach out and email Kits Jones at [email protected] You will be welcomed and greatly appreciated. This Photo by Unknown Author is 17

Hospitality Greeters The first friendly faces that most of our newcomers see are our Greeters. They welcome everyone who enters through the main doors. This is a great way to serve not only our visitors but gives you a chance to connect with your church family too. Greeters also provide our first-time guests with a “welcome gift” and introduce them to other members. Contact Parish Admin at [email protected] or extension 700. Refreshments After services, we gather for coffee and light snacks. If hospitality is your gift, it’s a perfect place to serve. You can sign-up online or call the church office. Our thought is to keep it simple with something you can nibble on and hold in your hand, like cookies, muffins, pretzels. Please consider serving at least once every two or three months or on a special occasion you want to celebrate. If two people want to serve together, that works too. Contact Parish Admin at [email protected] or extension 700. New Members/Exploring Church of the Good Shepherd If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact our interim rector or our parish administrator. New members will be welcomed into the church when Bishop Lawrence visits Good Shepherd in 2020. Contact Parish Admin at [email protected] or extension 700. 18

Music Ministry Director of Music Ministries Brenda Albinger [email protected] Contemporary Worship Leader In Transition Adult Choir The choir needs your help! The ensemble assists in leading the worship during our 9:00am service and at special services throughout the year. We would love for you to come and contribute your gifts when you can. If you would like to participate, please contact Brenda Albinger. Musicians We are always excited to have additional accompaniment with our praises. If you play an instrument and would like to share your gifts from time to time or even every Sunday, please contact Brenda Albinger to discuss. Worship Team The Contemporary Worship Team at Good Shepherd provides the music for the contemporary service. Our goal is to lead the congregation in biblical worship of God through songs and hymns using modern musical styles. The team is comprised of members of Good Shepherd offering back to God the musical gifts he has given us. Feel free to contact Brenda Albinger for more information about the team. 19

Worship Service Support Staff Contact: Parish Administrator [email protected] It takes more than 20 volunteers to provide worship support every Sunday at both of our services. Please consider helping in some area on Sunday while you are here. Your gifts of service are indeed an act of worship. Acolytes We are looking for adults as well as young people to serve in the role of acolyte at the 9:00am service. The acolyte assists in leading processions and helps the celebrant during our traditional worship on Sunday mornings. Students in grade 3 and up are eligible to serve. Contact the Parish Administrator to set up a training opportunity. Altar Guild A dedicated group of women and men serve the Lord by carefully providing what is necessary for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. The guild’s role is to set-up and breakdown all the items that you see at communion. We could especially use some more volunteers for the 10:30am service. Contact the Parish Administrator to set up a training time. Lay Readers and Chalice Bearers Parishioners are trained to read publicly the lessons at our 9 and 10:30am services, administer the chalice at Communion, and to read the Prayers of the People. Our servers are scheduled for the service they normally attend. Contact the Parish Administrator for more information. 20

Ushers Ushers assist in seating people at the 9:00am Sunday liturgy, as well as at special services throughout the year. In addition, ushers assist those with special seating needs, and collecting and securing the offering. Please contact the Parish Administrator to serve or for details. PowerPoint Ministry We use a slide presentation to guide us through our 10:30am service. We are always recruiting people who like a front row seat and enjoy helping our service flow smoothly. The task simply calls for someone to advance the slides as we move through the service. There is also a possibility to help in the production of the PowerPoint slides if interested. Brenda helps oversee this ministry. For staff contact email [email protected]. 21

Ministry Teams At Good Shepherd, we use a team model approach to ministry. Many of our teams are looking for members to help plan and facilitate ministry in our community. Please prayerfully consider if there is an area of interest where you could offer your gifts and talents and contact the chair for more information. Building and Grounds Roddy Traxler, Chair This team takes on minor, and occasionally, not so minor repair projects all around the church. They also help to guide our ongoing maintenance plans making recommendations and obtaining quotes for church staff and the vestry. If you are handy, and would like to join this team, they would be glad to have your help. Day School & Children Lauren Seben, Chair This team works to strategize how we can best serve both our children and families who are with us as part of the day school, as well as, how we can serve our church families. Children are both our present and our future leaders and this team works to help incorporate them into the life of our church in a variety of ways so that they can grow up to know Christ and be a part of His church. Discipleship Whit McGreevy & Billy Steen, Co-Chair This team helps to focus on the best ways to help people mature in their Christian faith. If you like to teach or mentor others about the love of Christ and would like to be a part of this team, please let them know. 22

Finance Tommy Clarke, Chair & Treasurer The finance team works to keep us stay apprised of our financial resources and how we can best steward those resources for our immediate and long-range goals. This group will help oversee our routine finances as well as recommendations for capital improvements or any fund-raising efforts. If you are detail oriented, love planning and budgets and enjoy finding solutions, you could be a great asset to this team. Member Care John Wall, Chair Taking care of our congregation is vital to showing Christ's love to one another whether it be a phone call, a visit, a meal delivered, or prayer concerns. This team's focus is to be sure we are taking care of our members by visiting shut-ins, helping those in need, making hospital and rehabilitation visits, and being a listening ear. Parish Life Sarah Margaret Rosling & Marcus Taylor, Co-Chairs This newly formed team is tasked with all the events that happen here at Good Shepherd and how we best communicate what is happening here at Good Shepherd. This is a team where many talents can be utilized. You might enjoy just being hospitable, like to keep your hands busy, like to shop, plan or organize for parties and events, reach out to the community or just plain like to have fun, then you would be a good match for this group. 23
