DECEMBER 2021 | VOL.3 & 4 1ST MORNINGSIDE SCOUT In this edition: LOOKING FORWARD TO A NEW YEAR Scouts 'went' camping p2-3 2021 has been a great year for 1st Morningside Scout Troop. That was regardless of the challenges it face. Look, our new kitchen It is the first time in history that the troop delivered three Springbok Scouts - to p4 Blake Imbert, Tarryn Nitch and Nic Peak. Tarryn also happen to be the first female Springbok Scout at 1st Morningside. World Jamboree coming p5 Another major achievement at the end of the year, was for three of our Scouts - Dharvish Toolsi, Hannah Smith and Michael Elfick - attended the 44th Weston Meet our new Chief PLTU at Gilwell Scout Training Centre. It is the first time since January 2020 Scout that Scouts could present a PLTU and these three did extremely well. Thank you p6 to Blake Imbert (3rd time) and Jason Wood (1st time) who staffed. Sanjamb 2022 The Parents' Committee would like to thank all the parents, as well as Bear p7 (Robin Ellis - our district commissioner - for attending our AGM held on 15 October. We were really looking forward to a fantastic end of year event with our annual campfire, but this had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. Be it as it may, we know our Scouts, Cubs and Meerkats had a fantastic time all the way until the end of the year. We plan to resume activities early in the new year with meetings, camps and hikes. Hopefully we will manage to organise a family camp again as we did in 2019. Until then, stay safe, have a blessed Festive Season and a prosperous 2022!

DECEMBER 2021 | VOL. 3 & 4 LOOK, OUR NEW KITCHEN As you all would have noticed (we hope), the hall has seen major changes during 2020/21. One thing that is sadly still missing, is a proper kitchen. Fear not. The Parents' Committee planned to have a decent kitchen - that is what the space is for next to our new bathrooms. However, fitting a kitchen is not cheap. Thank you very much to Sara Elliot for sourcing a second hand kitchen for us. It was donated to the troop and will be installed soon. We can't wait to see what the Scouts can cook up in the kitchen!

The 25th World Scout Jamboree Contingent Management Team are gearing up and have started planning South Africa's participation in the 25th World Scout Jamboree in SaeManGeum in the Republic of Korea from 1 to 12 August 2023. The South African Contingent will leave South Africa on 23 July 2023, and return home on 13 August 2023. To be an eligible youth participant at the 25th World Scout Jamboree, you must have been born between 22 July 2005 and 31 July 2009. If you are older, you can also join us as a member of the International Service Team (IST), apply to be a Troop Scouter or Assistant Troop Scouter, or be a member of the Contingent Management Team. DECEMBER 2021 | VOL. 3 & 4 MEET OUR NEW CHIEF SCOUT Our current Chief Scout’s term comes to an end on the 31st of January 2022. The Scout Board, having reviewed the nominations and completing the interview process, are now honoured to announce that Mr Khonzaphi Mdaka will serve as the new Chief Scout of South Africa. Khonzaphi is currently serving as the Deputy Chief Scout and has been a vital member of the Management Committee. For more than 25 years he has been an active and dedicated member who is revered by all who know him. He joined the South African Scout Movement in 1994 in Mataffin, Mpumalanga. Between 2000 and 2015, Khonzaphi served the Mpumalanga Region in multiple leadership positions ranging from Deputy Provincial Commissioner, to Provincial Commissioner and Provincial Chairman. During this tenure he facilitated collaboration between uniformed and non-uniformed members, the general public and international donors. He also, in partnership with the German NGO Nangu Thina, Khonzaphi has often stated that he wants to contribute to coordinated the building of the Mpumalanga Regional Office making Scouting a symbol of life for the young people of our and Training Center,. DECEMBER 2021 | VOL. 3 & 4 SANJAMB 2002 Sanjamb 2022 is going to be held at the Emseni camp in KZN. The plan is (currently) for Sanjamb to take place in December 2022 (final dates to be confirmed depending on the pandemic). This camp is settled at the base of Spioenkop Mountain along the banks of the Tugela River, at the foothills of the Drakensberg, near Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal. Remember to diarise this event, where you will be able to join hundreds of other Scouts from all over South Africa for an epic adventure. The camp will cost R3 200 per participant (excluding bus transfers). Scouts must be 12 years old to attend. Click here for more information and to register.
