What does a Director of Security do?As director of my department, I am in charge of the security and preventing incidents in the propertynot only for guests but also for employees. I am in charge of the events that happen here. As youknow, we have a huge night life in a busy place with two restaurants. So, basically preventing andmaking sure everybody is safe in the property is my duty.¿Qué es lo que hace un Director de Seguridad?Yo como director de mi departamento estoy encargado de la seguridad y de prevenir incidentes en lapropiedad tanto de los huéspedes como de los empleados. Estoy encargado de los eventos que sucedenaquí. Como sabes, tenemos un tremendo night life en un lugar bien ocupado con dos restaurantes.Tenemos un night club que en el día también tiene fiestas de piscina. Así que, básicamente prevenirincidentes y que todo el mundo este seguro en la propiedad es mi deber.2. What is the most important for the Department of Security of a hotel?Security and preventing incidents. I mean to workers compensation that means the incidents that theemployees have. I mean, basically keeping the place safe and working in a safe environment.¿Qué es lo más importante para el Departamento de Seguridad de un hotel?La seguridad y prevenir incidentes. Me refiero a workers compensation que significa los incidentes quetienen los empleados. Es decir, básicamente mantener el lugar seguro para trabajar en un ambienteseguro.3. How is a work day for you?It depends on the season that we are. Now that we are getting closer to the highest and busiestseason a lot of events are coming. For example, the Art Basel is and New Years eve are coming and,after them, the Miami Music Week. There are a lot of events that I have to plan for everything to endup well when we talk about security.¿Cómo es un día de trabajo tuyo?Un día de trabajo para mi depende en que temporada estamos. Ahora que nos estamos acercando a latemporada alta que es la más ocupada vienen muchos eventos. Como por ejemplo, ahora viene ArtBasel, New Years Eve, después de eso viene Miami Music Week. Son muchos los eventos que yo tengoque planificar para que todo salga bien cuando se trata de seguridad.4. How does the Department of Security collaborate with the people who work in the hotel?Keeping them safe not only physically but also in the environment. I mean, in a health environment, clean andmaking sure there is not any problem that could affect in their personal lives or in their work place.¿Cómo colabora el Departamento de Seguridad con las personas que trabajan en el hotel?Manteniéndolos seguros, no solamente en lo que puede pasar físicamente sino en el ambiente también. En unambiente sano, limpio y que no haya ningún problema que pueda afectar en su vida personal o en su ambientede trabajo.5. How were your beginnings? What was your first position?My first position in this industry was as Barback at Delano. I worked in the bar preparing all the things the bartenderneeded in order for him to be ready to prepare his drinks. I worked in that position for two years, until I realized thatmy field was more in security than in other position. I liked the department, I liked what I did and it described mebecause it is about in what you feel comfortable and security is in what I felt that way, it is my world basically. I startedin the 2005 if I am not wrong, at Delano and I worked there for 5 years. After that, I started in 2012 with SPE at theSLS South Beach in the Department of Security as well. After 2 years they promoted me to the Red Bury so they gaveme my first security equipment. It was a small team of security people. I think it was a year later that they promoted meto Security Manager here at the SLS and apparently, I did a good job and they promoted me to Director and now I amin charge of the whole property. I have a total of 14 security people in the hotel. I have 14 in High Beach with 3supervisors and a manager.¿Cómo fueron tus principios? ¿Cuál fue tu primera posición?Mi primera posición en esta industria fue como Barback en el Delano. Yo trabajaba en el bar preparando todas lascosas para el bartender para que él esté preparado para hacer las bebidas. Lo hice por dos años recuerdo, hasta queme di cuenta de que el field mío era mas de seguridad que otra cosa. Me gustó el departamento, me gustó lo que yohacía y me describía a mi porque es en lo que tú te sientas cómodo y en eso fue en lo que yo me sentí, en mi mundobásicamente. Comencé en el 2005 si no me equivoco en el Delano, trabajé ahí por 5 años. Después de ahí comencé enel 2012, seguridad también con SBE en el SLS South Beach. Después de dos años me promovieron recuerdoal Hotel Redbury so me dieron por primera vez el equipo mío de seguridad. Creo que un año después me promovierona Security Manager aquí en el SLS y aparentemente hice un buen trabajo y me promovieron a Director y ahora estoyencargado de la propiedad completa. Tengo un total de 14 personas de seguridad en el hotel. Tengo 14 en High Beachcon tres supervisores y un manager. Page 2

6. Is there an experience that you remember that worked for you to learn?I have been through a lot of things and I am going to be honest, the majority of them have been positive. My mentor was Chug Colado. He was aninfluential person in my career. He taught a lot and I can say that thanks to him I did not see myself in bad situations because I had a person thatwas always there for me. Any question I had, any mistake that could have done basically he prevented it in a way that today I am thankful withhim. He was always there for me whenever I needed him. So, the mistakes I could have done he put them in front of me and helped me preventthem in a certain way. So basically I have been lucky of having good people around me and maybe it is because of that that I did not have toomuch negative situations that anyway I could have learned from them too.¿Qué experiencia recuerdas que te haya servido para aprender?He pasado por tantas cosas y te voy a decir la verdad, la mayoría han sido positivas. Mi mentor que fue Chuck Collado, fue una persona muyinfluyente en mi carrera, me enseñó muchísimo y puedo decir que gracias a el no me vi en malas situaciones porque tuve una persona que siempreestuvo ahí para mí, cualquier pregunta que yo tenía, errores que pude haber cometido, el básicamente lo previno de cierta forma u otra y estoymuy agradecido con el. Siempre estuvo ahí cada vez que lo necesitaba. Entonces los errores que pude haber cometido el me los puso al frente y loevitó de cierta forma. Entonces básicamente he sido bien dichoso, una persona con mucha suerte de tener gente buena alrededor de mí ybásicamente a lo mejor por eso no tuve tantas situaciones negativas que de las que pude haber aprendido de igual manera.7. What values do you intend to transmit?Be honest in what you do. Be sincere and work hard in what you do. At the end of the day you are going to see positive answers. I am atremendous example of it. I started as a guard back, and right now I am the Director of Security in this property that for me it is a honor and allthese is due to being honest, follow the right paths and basically this is what I would transmit to others.¿Qué valores intentas transmitir?Ser honesto en lo que tú haces, ser sincero, trabajar duro en lo que haces. Al final del día tu vas a ver los frutos. Yo soy un tremendo ejemplo deeso. Comencé como un Barback, ahora mismo estoy como el Director de Seguridad de esta propiedad que para mí es un honor y todo eso se debe aser honesto, a seguir el buen camino y básicamente eso es lo que yo le transmitiría a los demás.8. What advice would you give to the people who just started working inthe hotels from your experience in security?In this industry you could count on your yourself, no matter in whatdepartment you are in. So focus on what you are going to do and work hardbecause the experience, your work and your reputation have a big value.Take care of your reputation in a 100%. Do it the best possible way and, I sayit again, you are going to see good answers eventually.¿Qué consejo le darías a los que recién se inician trabajando en loshoteles desde tu experiencia en seguridad?De esta industria tu puedes contar tu persona, no importa el departamentoque seas. Entonces en lo que vas a hacer enfócate y trabaja duro que laexperiencia, tu trabajo y reputación valen mucho. Cuida tu reputación en un100%, hazlo lo mejor posible y vuelvo y repito, los frutos los vas a ver eneventualmente.9. What is the next step that you project?My next step and one of the things that I think make a person better is keep on fighting.From my personal point of view if you get comfortable with just one position that is whatyou are going to do your whole life. So, what always have worked with me has been thatwhen I started working in this industry I wanted to be a bartender. Then, I wanted to besecurity, and then when I was security I wanted to be director and I still even wasn’tsupervisor but wanting it helped me to keep growing, keep pushing myself to a higherposition. A lot of people think that just because I reached the position of director I amgoing to stay there. And no, now I want to be regional, I want to keep growing. That isthe way it should be in order for this to happen. It has worked for me and it would beanother advice that I give you all. Never stop, keep going.¿Cuál es el próximo paso que proyectas?Mi próximo paso y una de las cosas que yo pienso que hacen mejor a una persona esseguir luchando. Si tú te acomodas en una sola posición, eso es lo que vas a hacer toda tuvida, en mi opinión personal. Entonces lo que también me ha funcionado siempre ha sidoque cuando yo comencé quería ser bartender, luego quería ser seguridad, luego cuandocomencé seguridad quería ser director y no era ni supervisor todavía. Pero el querer meayudó a seguir creciendo, a seguir impulsándome a mí mismo a una posición más alta.Mucha gente piensa que porque subí ya a la posición de director me voy a quedar ahí ypues no, ahora yo quiero ser Regional ahora yo quiero seguir creciendo. Esa es la formaque debería de ser para que esto funcione. A mí me ha funcionado y ese sería otroconsejo para todos. Nunca paren, siempre sigan. Page 3
