Dictators all share a similarity with each other and that’s the technique they used to help them rule. This technique is known as they T.I.C.S. technique. T.I.C.S. stands for: ❏ Threat of force: this is where they would threat to do different violent actions if you didn’t follow or do exactly what they wanted. ❏ Indoctrination/ Propaganda: Indoctrination is the message that the leader wants the people to believe. Propaganda is the method they use to got the message out. ❏ Controlled participation: This would be events where people were made to participate in, such as elections and rallies. ❏ Scapegoat: This is when they place the blame on other individuals or groups to make themselves look better.

Dictator’s Rise to Power

Adolf Hitler Before Hitler started WWII, he first gained some power in September 1919. He became a member of the political party known as the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (or German Workers Party when translated to English). In 1920, the name of this political party ended up changing to Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (or National Socialist German Workers Party when translated to English). This party was commonly known as the Nazi Party. They were anti-Marxist and were against the elected post-war government involved in the Weimar Republic and the Treaty of Versailles. They stood up for major Pan- Germanism and nationalism as well as toxic anti-semitism. Hitler ended up gaining more power in March of 1933. This was after the Reichstag took in the Enabling Act in March 1933, giving him more authority. Hitler had already been made chancellor on the 30th of January, 1933 by President Paul Von Hindenburg. This was made possible after multiple parliamentary elections and related backroom interests.

Fidel Castro Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was known to be a freedom fighter and a politician as well. Fidel Castro carried out as Prime Minister of Cuba from the years 1959 to 1979 and became president in the year 1979 and carried it out until 2008. He believed in Marxist-Leninist and Cuban nationalist. Fidel also performed as the first secretary of the Communist party of Cuba during the years of 1961 to 2011. Before he was president or Prime Minister, he was first responsible for creating the first Communist state. This state was in the western hemisphere. This was just the beginning of what would soon become five decades of Fidel Castro ruling as the leader of Cuba.

Robert Mugabe Robert Gabriel Mugabe was a Zimbabwean rebellion and politician. He ran as Prime Minister of Zimbabwe during the years of 1980 to 1987. He then became president and ran from 1987 to 2017. It was said that Robert Mugabe engaged in peace talks in the United Kingdom which would then lead to the result of Lancaster House Agreement. This agreement would then soon lead to the end of the war. During the 1980’s general election, he had lead ZANU-PF to triumph. This event would then lead him to becoming Prime Minister when the country gained internationally acknowledged the self-ruling later that same year.

Justification in Rejection of Liberalism

Adolf Hitler Hitler rejected Liberalism because he didn’t want the German’s to have a say in how he ruled. This is because he thought that the German’s were incapable in ruling their own land. He tried to eliminate anyone who wasn’t a “true German”, or an Aryan which means “master race”. To Hitler, the true German had blonde hair, blue eyes, and was quite tall. During his reign, Hitler and the Nazi’s had the schools do multiple things that they thought would help them determine if they were part of the “master race” or part of the “inferrior race”. To determine this, they would measure your skull, measure the length of your nose, record the colour of your eyes, and the colour of your hair. If you were found to be not a true Aryan, you would get teased and made fun of in front of the whole class.

Fidel Castro Fidel Castro rejected some rules of Liberalism such as private property, individual rights and freedoms, and economic freedom. While he was in reign, Fidel created social programs. Some of these social programs would make it so the land you owned wasn’t private, whereas others would attempt to better the basics of living for the Cuban populations. But due to these social programs and Fidel’s high military spending, this created very little freedom in the economy. Fidel chose to make things equalized for everyone which would restrict others from being able to do certain things. For private property, the citizens didn’t have access to own any land but instead were given a certain amount of land by their dictator. For the individual rights and freedoms, some of the people were benefiting from the equalization but others were suffering and were being restricted. For the economic freedoms, because of the equalization, the wealthier people were not aloud to spend more than others or earn more then others.

Robert Mugabe Robert Mugabe rejected some of the principles of liberalism like individual rights and freedoms, competition, and rule of law. Robert Mugabe denied competitions from happening because the main intention for while he was running was to make money for himself. This lead the companies to be monopolized. He and the people he found trust in were not given the same laws as the other citizens. He abused his power which is how he was able to contain his power. All that was mentioned affected the Zimbabwean citizens greatly because he ran for so long.
