COLOUR AN EXHIBITION BY STASHA
This exhibition and everything you see in it, every colour every shade, is dedicated to my Darling Daddy. The brightest star.
I LOVE THIS COLLECTION......though parts of this exhibition were very different for me.I had a real need to paint again. I had missed painting so badly. I had found creation in writing andcomposing my book and designing t-shirts, and loved it, every minute of it, but the total freedom andjoy of painting is second to none.Through circumstance, I was unable to paint for a long time, so when I was finally able to, I wentand found the biggest canvases I could, simply because I had so much longing built up in me, all backlogged and desperate to come out; I wanted as much white space as possible. No limits.First came the rainbows.I did the smaller ones, but wanted more.I remember sitting on my studio floor and looking up at this huge beautiful white canvas leaningagainst the wall and thinking - Yes, this is where I want to paint the next Rainbow.I knew it was a challenge, it was bigger than anything I had ever done, and even moving it was hard, but I simply couldn’t hold back the need to do it, I wanted so much to paint it…Like an explosion, energy like a sea, all I wanted to do was to create a Rainbow. To see colour, and so much of it…I wasfilled with heartbeat and excitement.Everything I had in me had to go into that painting, I had no time to wait, and painted all in one daytill it was finished and I was spent.I felt great. Pale, but great. From there I moved on to the Seascapes. I think because like we all do at times, I wanted to escape.Somewhere calm and beautiful. Somewhere peaceful. Much more a feeling than a place….
Perhaps a memory of something lovely. Every one of us needs somewhere quiet to go sometimes…to be at peace. The series of dots is again something I have never done before. I cannot tell you what inspired me,simply that I saw the image so clearly in my head that I just copied it out.As I was doing it, it occurred to me how much like Life this painting was. Each and every one of usdifferent; The way we live, in mind, in body and state, yet all of us living together.I called this painting “Neighbours”.Once I had finished Neighbours, I looked again to my last huge canvas…I knew to repeat thistheme would be a challenge and a half, but once again the sheer want and excitement to do it tookover. For five days I worked on this painting. I used planks of wood to get to the middle, (I alwayspaint everything on the floor), and realised I had to come up with something like 168 differentcolours/combinations to fill the (roughly) 847 squares in the painting. It was by far the mostdemanding piece I had ever done, but I’m so glad I did it.The results are what you see.…..So I guess for me Colour, is about Life. It’s about energy and living. Not being afraid. It’s about seeing what is beautiful around you, andembracing it. Accepting without always understanding, and aboutremembering that a Rainbow is something to smile at.
