WHAT IS ELECTION?  It is a mechanism by which people choose their representatives at regular intervals and can change them if they wish to do so. In election voters can make many choices-  They can choose who will make laws for them  They can choose who will form govt. and take decisions.  They can choose the party which will guide the government and law making

WHY DO WE NEED ELECTION? Elections take place regularly in any democracy even in the countries which are not democratic But we need election because rule of the people(where people sit together to take major decisions) is not possible in any large community. Therefore, in many countries people rule through their representatives.

WHAT MAKES AN ELECTION DEMOCRATIC?  Everyone should be able to choose their representatives(one vote one value)  Parties and candidates should be free to contest elections and should offer some real choice to the voters.  The candidates preferred by the people should get elected.  Elections must held regularly after every few years.

OUR SYSTEM OF ELECTION

CONSTITUENC Y Voters in a geographical area who elect a representative to the legislative bodies. Example-there are 26 Lok Sabha constituencies in Gujarat, Gandhinagar is one of them.

VOTER'S LIST In a democratic election the list of those who are eligible to vote is prepared before the elections This list is officially knows as Electorial Roll and commonly known as voter's list. First condition of democratic election is that everyone should get equal opportunities to vote

VOTER'S LIST A complete revision of list takes place after every 5 years. A new system of election photo identity card has been introduced However, it's not yet compulsory voters can show any other card like rashan card to vote

NOMINATION OF CANDIDATES  Anyone who can be a voter can also become a candidate in election.  Requirement- The candidate should be minimum 25 years of age  While its only 18 for being a voter

NOMINATION OF CANDIDATES  Political party nominate their candidates who get party symbol or support  Party's nomination is often called party ticket  Every person who wishes to contest election must fill a 'Nomination Form' and had to give some money as 'Party ticket'

Election campaign is a two week period During this period candidates contact their ELECTION voters address public meeting to mobilise CAMPAIGN support But election campaign is not only two week period It starts a month before the elections. Political parties try to focus on big issues to attract people
