What is democracy

A Democracy is a form of government in which the rulers are elected by the people. The people have the authority to deliberate and decide legislation, or to choose governing officials to do so.

Importance of democracy

Democratic government, which is elected by and accountable to its citizens, protects individual rights so that citizens in a democracy can undertake their civic obligations and responsibilities, thereby strengthening the society as a whole.

Key features of democracy

1. In a democracy the final decision making power must rest with those elected by the people 2. A democracy must be based on a free and fair elections where those currently in power have a fair chance of losing 3. In a democracy each adult citizen must have one vote and each vote must have one value 4. A democratic government rules within limits set by constitutional law and citizens rights
