editors’ letters2 To say that I am excited to be writing to you as co-editor of Emory’s (404) fashion magazine would be a huge under- statement. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to uphold the traditions of our student run publication, while at the same time giving it a fresh interpretation. None of this would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our incredibly talented models, stylists, make-up artists, and layout team! Fashion designer Ralph Lauren once said, “I don’t design clothes. I design dreams.” Fashion. A single word that embrac- es endless possibilities and interpretations. It is an extension of who you are as an individual and an avenue of self-ex- pression. Put on a little black dress and you represent elegant chic. Add a studded biker bootie and you are morphed into edgy confidence. Throw on a harem sweat pant low at the hip and you instantly embody a quiet self-assurance. Fashion encompasses infinite shapes and forms. It is the power of the individual to transform what fashion means to them through their own unique interpretations. (404)’s Fall 2016 edition examines the beautiful simplicity yet deceptively complex duality of fashion through an explo- sion of pictorials. We explore the ability to create dynamic visual themes through three basic elements: color, texture, and architecture. Flip through the pages to see how fashion is shaped, colored, edited, and interpreted by our team. My hope is that this then prompts you to come up with your own interpretation of it! It has been an incredible experience working on this magazine. Again, I want to thank our amazing team for their hard work and creativity. I also want to thank our readers for their support and allowing me to share my passion and obses- sion with fashion with all of you! Felicia Kane
Dear reader, Thank you for giving our magazine a read and taking time with it. My only request for you when you’rereading through our fall ‘16 issue is: keep an open mind about fashion and appreciate its simultaneous straight-forwardness and complexity. I spent quite a lot of time brainstorming for the main idea of this issue, trying to wring out one idea ortrend or fascination that was completely new and original in the fashion industry. When I realized I was gettingnowhere, I tried to open my mind up more to think of fashion from a different angle. I started thinking aboutthe very building blocks of fashion stripped down, and eventually narrowed it down to its three core elements:color, the texture of pieces, and the shape and structure of pieces. And so the theme of this issue was born:Color, Texture, Architecture: Elements of Fashion. I hope this concept will help you think of fashion in its simplest, most organic form, and also in itsmost complex, tangled form. It’s been a fulfilling and exciting experience running this magazine. I am deeply thankful for everyoneon the 404 team and their creativity and ambition. This issue would not have been possible without their time, energy, and insight. Thank you, Jiyoon Shin
