Project gallery CITY BLOCK CHIC New Ludgate is the transformation of a city block into a generous and lively new quarter near St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The new development designed by Fletcher Priest, Sauerbruch Hutton and Gustafson Porter sets up a dialogue between two striking and complementary new buildings whilst reinstating and improving the public realm of the entire area, including a new pedestrian route and public square or piazza. Fletcher Priest was asked to masterplan the site by client Land Securities, separating it into two buildings – 1 New Ludgate, designed by Fletcher Priest and 2 New Ludgate to the north, designed by Sauerbruch Hutton. Gustafson Porter were asked to provide the landscape treatment of this new public realm, which ties the new development seamlessly into the surrounding urban fabric whilst giving an unmistakable character to New Ludgate as a whole. 1 New Ludgate comprises of nine storeys, plus a ground floor animated by retail and bars under glass awnings using a façade of a masonry grid that provides shade. White precast concrete frames, simply detailed, respect their neighbours and set off the floor-to-ceiling glazing, while amber Kathedral glass fins are used on the piazza façade in the new public space. Designed by Sauerbruch Hutton, 2 New Ludgate offers high quality, up-to-date office space with a restaurant and retail areas. It is a building that combines a respectful urban attitude towards its historic situation with self-confident articulation of space and surfaces that speaks of today. www.fletcherpriest.com www.sauerbruchhutton.com www.gustafson-porter.comPhotography by Jan Bitter July 2015 Architects Choice 11

Project galleryMOSCOW RULESThe Oleg Klodt Architectural Bureau has creatednew interiors for an apartment in an historicMoscow building dating back to the turn of thetwentieth century. The new decor is eclectic, asynthesis of contemporary American loft livingwith the style of an old-Moscow house. The client purchased the apartment indowntown Moscow after its initial renovation. Hewanted to take the recreation to the next level byhighlighting the history of the property andmaking its design striking and noble. Theapartment is within a historic building, whichwas once owned by a neighbouring church, andhe wanted to draw attention to this period, whilst also making it a fashionable and upscaleliving space. The designers decided to preserve the interior’searly 20th century style. The apartment has anexit to the roof of the building, with a wideveranda that has a great view of old Moscow. The intention was to reflect this classic view inthe interior.Oleg Klodt rearranged the floor plan into a largeopen-plan space incorporating the living room, dining room, kitchen and entrance hall. The onlywalled space is the bathroom. The location ofthe bathroom helped to create two nichespaces, and separates the entrance hall andkitchen from the open-plan living and diningarea. A particularly contemporary decision inthe process lay in creating a mirror wall toconceal the prominent bathroom. A conventionalmirror wall would have been possible but thedesigners thought it would appear mismatched,so they placed an antiqued mirror on the wall, which is in harmony with this building. From the beginning, the decision was made topreserve the original brick walls. These werereconstructed where necessary and all existingbricks were cleaned before they were treatedwith a mat varnish and some sections painted.Since the goal was to give the interior atraditional and calm atmosphere, the designerscombined neoclassical styling with this modernenvelope. The idea was to future-proof theinterior against any changes in the client'spersonal lifestyle over time.www.olegklodt.comJuly 2015 Architects Choice 13

Project galleryGLAD TO CLADKebony and Arkitema Architects have collaborated for an extension atGentofte School. The new addition to the school in Denmark creates afurther 460m² of space, which can accommodate 100 children, spreadacross two floors.Arkitema Architects, worked in a close collaboration with the school’smanagement and teaching teams to ensure the space was practical andergonomic for both the primary classes and the after school activities. The children at Gentofte school age from 5-9 years, as such the buildinghas been completed with special features such as sliding walls that alsofunction as writing boards and can be easily operated by the children. Thenew space can also be converted into either a single or double-heightspace and can be divided into compartments to host several classroomsdependent on the needs of the students and teachers. The large southfacing princess balconies will similarly afford further dynamic teachingmethods by creating additional outdoor and recreational spaces. The interior has also been constructed with the unique needs of thepupils in mind, resulting in an innovative range of uses. The double heightspace can serve as an orangery; in-keeping with the ecological theme ofthe build.Sustainability was key to the design ethos, leading to the decision to cladthe entire façade of the new extension, just under 400m², in Kebony wood.Produced using sustainably sourced species of soft wood, which areimpregnated with a non-chemical bio-based product and heated underpressure, Kebony is a highly durable and environmental product.arkitema.comkebony.com14 Architects Choice July 2015

Project galleryWORK WELL, LIVE WELLMedibank is in the business of promoting better health for everyone. This includesthe people who come to work every day at Medibank Place, its new head office inMelbourne’s Docklands, designed by HASSELL.The new workplace was part of a major cultural change program for Medibank, tolive its purpose to the core and create better health outcomes for its members, employees and the community. With laptops and mobile phones in hand, Medibank’s people can now select frommore than 26 types of work settings, ranging from indoor quiet spaces andcollaborative hubs to wifi-enabled balconies and places to stand and work. Circadianlighting in certain areas of the workspace mimics natural daylight patternssupporting people’s biorhythms. Employees who want a more vigorous workoutduring the day can also make use of a multipurpose sports court at ground level.Adjacent to the sports court, an edible garden sits near a demonstration kitchen thatMedibank uses to promote healthy eating to both staff, not-for-profit organisationsand the wider community. The building itself has been described as being ‘hard-wired for health’. A ramp from the main entrance on Bourke Street spirals upwardsfrom street level, allowing Medibank employees easy access to bike storage on theirway in to work. This makes both a symbolic and practical commitment toencouraging employee health and wellbeing.HASSELL also invited three very different design firms – Chris Connell Design, KerryPhelan Design Office and Russell & George – to collaborate on the design for theplaza level which sits in the middle of the tower. This succeeded in creating layers ofcharacter and meaning to inspire people to connect in new ways with theirworkplace.www.hassellstudio.comPhotography by Earl CarterJuly 2015 Architects Choice 17

Project galleryCONSTRUCT,RECONSTRUCTSUMMA, one of Turkey’s major internationalconstruction companies, purchased thispractically derelict structure at the end of 2012,taking a decision to move closer the centralCBD in Levent at the Seyrantepe junction of thering road. The current construction located at Seyrantepe, where Büyükdere-Maslak axis creates a junctionpoint, has been considered as a new building witha structural grid and floor-to-floor height withinthe scope of renewal. As the building is “anattached building” and due to terracing, thefacade design has been focused. Depth has beengained by reflecting the end point at the top floorof the current structure. There was a condition forthe existence of a car park for the entry level ofthe highest ceiling as well as the first floor; acomposition, which is far from a car parkappearance has been designed for this purpose. The headquarters of SUMMA have been placedon the three floors at the top of the building toenable a flexible extension to the lower floors asthe company grows. The offices are composedof a group of open working areas and directoroffices separated by partitions located in aNortherly direction.Office levels are a series of shared cellular openplan spaces and directors offices, which arearranged to the north. The darker core is utilizedfor reception areas and meeting rooms. Theselected range of furniture from Nurus, ‘U Too’ isoffset against glass interior walls with naturalwalnut timber wall paneling and anthracite grayglazing elements. Milbank has been creating precast concrete spiral stairs since 2011 and has been commissioned for staircase installations in some of the most prestigious property developments in the UK. Following on from this success it seemed a natural progression for Milbank Concrete products to create a distinct division with its own clear branding, to drive sales forward. Inspired by Greek mythology, the name Kallisto means ‘most beautiful’ and signifies how it is possible to be lifted by beauty, in all forms. Milbank has invested in a world class Construx stair mould, believed to be the only one in the UK. The mould, along with Milbank’s palletised formwork and precast shuttering system, ensures the staircase finish is of the highest quality. To meet the ongoing demand for Kallisto precast concrete spiral stairs, Milbank has taken on dedicated team members for the new division, including a recent college graduate who the company is now training as a mould carpenter. 01787 223 931 | www.milbank.co.uk July 2015 Architects Choice 23

To mark the occasion, Steelcase held a ‘Power of Place’ event at which Steelcase’s Guillaume Alvarez, and Bostjan Ljubic, revealed how UK businesses can seize the opportunity to trigger an ‘office renaissance’ to support worker engagement and wellbeing to increase organisational performance. According to Gallup’s “State of the global Workplace Report”, worldwide 87 percent of employed people are “not engaged” or “actively disengaged” at work, which means that they’re emotionally disconnected from their workplaces. Recent Steelcase studies have shown that the physical work environment can have a strong impact on employee wellbeing and engagement. “When designing the new WorkLife in London we used our insights to create a space that supports the wellbeing of people”, says Ljubic. “Today it supports all work modes an employee may occupy throughout the day. The space both offers standing desks, normal desk heights and lounge seating, connects the local teams with their colleagues all over the world through smart technologies and offers a variety of open, shielded and enclosed spaces that address the needs of privacy seekers, while a kitchen supports informal exchange.” www.steelcase.com26 Architects Choice July 2015

The seven-storey car park is highly visible, occupying a prominent site alongside the Wessex Way dual carriageway, in close proximity to Bournemouth’s town centre. As a result and as a condition of planning, the external façade required special treatment to soften the visual impact of the concrete structure on the environment. To deliver this element of the scheme, Levolux was invited to develop a custom screening solution that obscures views of unsightly structures and vehicles, while creating an attractive architectural feature. The solution comprised Levolux’s unique Infiniti Fin system, incorporating 400mm wide aerofoil-shaped Fins, arranged vertically. The Fins were required in an assortment of lengths, fixed at contrasting angles and finished in a wide pallet of colours. www.levolux.comFLOOR ITTo compliment their recently refurbished showroom, a new ‘hightech’ workshop has been constructed at Charles Hurst Ferrari, theofficial Ferrari dealer in Northern Ireland. Remmers UK Ltd alongwith McLaughlin and Harvey Contractors were appointed to overseethe installation of a flooring system in keeping with the Ferraribrand and suitable for a workshop environment. The existing oldconcrete floor in the workshop was constructed in several slabs andtherefore a high potential for movement existed. The floor requiredfilling and levelling prior to the application of the new flexiblesurface finish. The system proposed by Remmers was a flexible3mm visco elastic PUR resin system with a polyurethane seal coat. The seal coat has integral R11 slip rating and a high degree ofchemical resistance. 0845 3730103 | www.remmers.co.uk SIKA SPECIFIFED It has been a fantastic year so far for Sika Sarnafil, with numerous projects, contractors and architects using its roofing products winning prestigious awards, right across the UK. The Joseph Black Building at the King’s Buildings Campus at the University of Edinburgh won the Single Ply Roofing category in the tenth NFRC National Roofing Awards. Sarnafil Membrane S327-15EL in patina green was installed on the listed building. At the RIBA South East Regional Awards, the Building of the Year Award went to Haworth Tompkins for its restoration of the Chichester Festival Theatre. Sika Sarnafil was specified to meet the complex acoustic requirements on the main theatre roof. The refurbishment also picked up the Sustainability Award, sponsored by Sika, and the Conservation Award. A further prize winning project, the £31 million Redcar Leisure and Community Centre, won the Regeneration Award at the RICS North East Awards. The project was part of the local council’s aim to get more people involved in sport and leisure in the area. Also shortlisted in the Design through Innovation category, the community centre was the first ever large-scale use of Sika Sarnafil’s new Self Adhered Membrane. 01707 394444 | [email protected] | www.sarnafil.co.uk July 2015 Architects Choice 33

Heating + ventilation SWAPPING BILLS FOR BIOMASS Natural energy supplier, Euroheat is helping one of the UK’s leading agricultural and sports colleges save an impressive 400,000kg of carbon per year by making the switch to biomass technology in a bid to reduce its annual £800,000 energy bill, while receiving Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments of just under £80,000 per year. Hartpury College campus, in Gloucester, covers some 360 hectares and is a residential learning hub for more than 1300 students working towards qualifications in equine, sport and animal and land studies. The site already boasts solar pv panels, so it was a natural progression that further green technology was installed. Simon Holden, co-founder of Euroheat, explained: “We’re delighted the college is now reaping huge benefits by opting for a biomass district heating system. We have installed four Euroheat prefabricated Energy Cabins, each containing a 199kW HDG Compact wood pellet boiler, integrated 14 tonne pellet store and 4000 litre accumulator.” Completed in December 2014, the project required a solution to supply heat and hot water to the accommodation, kitchen and Further Education buildings. 01885 491112 | www.euroheat.co.ukENCASED WINTER GARDENWorking with Bennetts Architects, Colt designed and installed a 1300m2 continuous plane of ventilation louvres that forms a transparentexternal skin covering a spectacular winter garden atop the new MarkLane office development in the heart of London. The Shadoglass louvresystem rests on a supporting mullion system containing a drive systemwith drive rods and gearboxes all provided by Colt. A Colt ICS 4-Linkcontrol system modulates the angle of the louvres according to thetemperature, wind and frost sensors, maintaining a comfortableenvironment in the winter garden. This project presented the particularchallenge of installing this huge structure in a tight space, at a greatheight and within a tight schedule. All the materials were shipped fromGermany to Colt’s UK site in Havant, where it was all divided intobatches and labelled according to the construction programme. Eachpackage was delivered to the construction site just in time, feedingmaterials as they were required without overcrowding the workspace. As specialists in energy efficiency, Cambridge-based Green Heat worked closely with the Trust, builders C J Murfitt Limited and property consultants Bidwells to create the eco bungalows within the same footprint as a standard two-bedroom home. Green Heat completed an assessment and energy efficiency calculations to allow an increase in the areas of permitted glazing in the bungalows. Windows have been sized and located to serve internal spaces and accessibility with as much use of natural daylighting and ventilation as possible, with windowless spaces limited to storage only. The windows have also been located to give residents the best possible views around the site, while still protecting their privacy. With interest already shown by other housing providers, charities and local authorities, Papworth Trust aims to use this project as a demonstration of what is possible to build for disabled residents in the future. 01223 277278 | www.greenheat.uk.com | ptrust.uk/1CpUTNE36 Architects Choice July 2015

Wilo-StratosGIGA is the solution for optimising the cost of heating, cold water andcooling systems in industrial applications and in commercialbuildings. As the first high efficiency glanded pump, it operatesreliably with the minimum of effort. Compared to conventionaluncontrolled pumps, Wilo-Stratos GIGA saves up to 70 per cent energy– per pump and year, this adds up to a saving of eight tonnes of CO2per pump, per year. This is possible because Wilo has designed everycomponent, from the drive, through the electronics to the hydraulics,to operate at the highest level, while perfectly matching thecomponents with each other.Proof of this is the recent selection of Wilo as a partner for thepumping requirements for the heating, cooling and chilled watersystems of two major heathcare developments in the North East –one a renovation project, the other a new build. One site provides arange of clinical services, which includes the Adult Service facility,Learning Disability Services, Older People's Continuing CareServices and Adult Rehabilitation Services. When the development was originally devised, it included pumpsfeaturing IE3 motors, but Wilo offered a response using the new GIGA -the first ever high efficiency glanded pump and a pump series thatoffers efficiency in excess of IE4. This approach was selected when thelonger term energy savings were shown to be very much in the client’sinterests.Although the capital cost of the pumps was higher than lowerefficiency alternatives, the life cycle costings associated withownership of these pumps, taking into consideration the lowerenergy costs, lower maintenance costs and the carbon savings, made the decision to go with the GIGA an easier option than it mayhave initially appeared. 01283 523000 | www.wilo.co.uk July 2015 Architects Choice 37

Comprising nine fresh designs, which interplay linear and graphic forms, the result is both striking and modern. As always, Deirdre’s designs merely provide inspiration for clients. Each carpet is totally bespoke, so anything is possible. The carpets can be fitted or free-standing; produced in any shape (even circular or fish-shaped!) or size; from a palette of over 2,000 shades; using luxurious wool or a tactile combination of wool and silk. The team uses different production methods to suit both budget and space, working with craftspeople practiced in the ancient skill of hand-knotting, who use Chinese or Indian silk and Tibetan wool; and with hand-tufting artists in Scotland or Yorkshire, using the finest New Zealand wool. The carpets can be produced using a pass machine, which is an affordable solution for larger spaces. Deirdre Dyson is proud to subscribe to GoodWeave, the international non-profit organisation working to end child labour in South Asia’s carpet industry. 0207 384 4464 | www.deirdredyson.com46 Architects Choice July 2015

Product gallery DYNAMIC DESIGN FREEDOM The launch of Schueco’s Parametric Façade System by sustainable building envelope specialist, Schueco UK Ltd, offers architects a new level of dynamic design freedom. Geometrically complicated 3D façades can now be designed as straightforward system solutions whose cost can be calculated with the certainty of a series product. The Parametric Façade is highly insulated, with Uf values up to 0.5 W/m2K, and surface elements that can be transparent or opaque. Sunlight and shading, guided views and daylight optimisation can all be employed as active design factors. The system can also accommodate BIPV panels for solar energy generation. Central to the Schueco Parametric solution is the continuous, closed digital process chain that operates in all phases of design, planning and fabrication. The result is that commonly encountered interface problems are eliminated and a uniform, consistent data model for every individual involved in the process is guaranteed. Schueco parametric planning tools include a library of ‘intelligent’ façade modules for CAD programs that can be freely combined and incorporated into a parametric façade during the design phase. 01908 282111 [email protected] | www.schueco.co.ukBOND, EVER-BONDEverbuild, a Sika Company are expanding their array of powdered tileadhesives by introducing four new products to the popular range. ProTherm is best used on terraces and balconies where there is a requirement for thermal performance and any insulated area and where depth is critical to overall construction. The ProTherm Quantum system offers exceptional performance, a 75mm threshold clearance, level threshold to external balcony and an NHBC Chapter 7.1 compliance. The ProTherm Quantum system is made up of insulation panels accompanied by thermoset infill boards, which are designed to cut and fit around penetrations and curved upstands. The ProTherm Quantum Hybrid inverted roof system provides a solution for most applications. Using a combination of both XPS and Quantum panels an exceptional U value can be achieved without compromising the internal upstand, and deliver the ability to maintain a level floor between the internal and external spaces; whilst meeting NHBC Chapter 7.1 requirements. The ProTherm Quantum Pure inverted roof system provides the thinnest solutions possible, and is ideal where the severe lack of space calls for using just the Quantum panel. www.radmat.com48 Architects Choice July 2015
