Roots & Shoots—The power to build a better world. Roots & Shoots encourages children to implement practical positive change for people, animals and the environment by providing them with free resources and a place to share their success stories with the world. Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots recently announced their new twinning program between schools in the UAE and schools in the United Kingdom. Through the program students will have the opportunity to learn about another group’s homeland, environment, wildlife, culture, religion and languages. They will be able to use technology such as email and video conferencing to give the students a personalized look at partner school and its students and activities. The perspectives they gain from another culture will encourage students to express themselves clearly. As part of twinning program, Ms. Tara Golshan, Executive Educational Director of Roots and Shoots, UK visited Dunes International School on Tuesday 1st October 2019. She empowered our students to use their voice and actions to make compassionate decisions, influencing and leading change in their communities and Challenge of making the world a better place for people, other animals and the environment we share. No matter the issue, being a part of Environment means choosing to be a change-maker and making the difference we want to make.
Around the World @ Dunes On the 27th of September every year, the world celebrates the World Tourism Day. The reason for World Tourism Day is to cultivate and create awareness among the society globally on the significance of tourism, and it’s social, political, financial and also cultural worth and value . Our Dunes International School celebrated world tourism day with utter zeal and ardor on 26th September 2019 the school draped completely with world’s culture and heritage.
World Heart Day is a reminder to each one of us about this life sustaining organ and Marking this day globally aims to increase public awareness and promote preventive measures to reduce the global inci- dence of cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke). To achieve this, Students must be educated and be aware of how they can lead a heart healthy lifestyle. Dunes International School marked this day with numerous activities; of which CPR session collaborated by Ahalia hospital impinged the students about the measurements one should take in case of any heart related emergencies. Replica of huge heart displayed in the reception area attracted everyone’s attention, where the students stapled their messages of the day. The morning assembly resplendently showed the importance of heart healthy life- style. The students, staff and parents pledged to live a precautious life and avoid any admonitory ac- tions that could prove a threat to our heart.
Nutrition plays a significant role in wide-spread diseases including those caused by deficiency of nutrients. Schools are important places for protecting and promoting health because they reach the majority of children, and through them their families and society as a whole. Furthermore, education is a key social determinant of health. It makes a significant contribution to people's understanding of health risks and how to avoid them. Focused on this, Dunes International School organized a session on ‘nutrition for kids’ in coordination with LLH hospital, Mussafah. It was an informative session for the students and staff, beautifully felicitated by Ms. Mary Joy, Dietitian of LLH hospital.
Tajneed– The capsule learning Moves Specific Objectives: focus on the empowerment and wellness of drivers, conductors and bus associates. Discussion on various problems faced by the bus monitors and the ways to handle them. The Tajneed volunteer performed a skit which described the way bus monitors take individual care of each one in the bus to ensure the safety of the students. It was followed by games in which the bus monitors took part actively. The atmosphere changed in to laughter and learning the skill on cooperation. The learning outcomes were focused on the leadership values, the importance of team- work and tolerance.
Solar energy, the smart way to power your home. Students, in their early age, learn to make their own solar devices and use them, not only they will likely to be future users of the solar energy but they will also be promoting its usage in their own generations and become Student Solar Ambassadors. Keeping this in mind, as a part of IIT Bombay’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration- Student Solar Ambassadors Workshop is being organized on the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, 2nd October 2019. In this unique one-day training program 4,00,000 students from different schools across the world united together learnt to assemble their own solar study lamps designed to help them to fulfill their study light needs. Dunes International School also joined this Historical Event by enrolling 100 students ranging the age group from 11 to 16. Through this workshop, scientific curiosity of young minds will be piqued towards clean technologies for the future, by making them Student Solar Ambassadors.
Gandhi Sahitya Vedi, Abu Dhabi took the initiative to celebrate the 150th birth anniver- sary of Father of our Nation by organizing a special program at ISC, Abu Dhabi. On this occasion, Indian Embassy and ISC joined and honoured the most talented students from each school. As the token of appreciation, the selected students were given one of Gandhiji’s classic books depicting the signature of the H.E. the Ambassador of India. Dunes International School also was delighted to be the part of special event by the par- ticipation of ten students. This was indeed a valuable and memorable gift for the stu- dents.
Grade 6B– Boys of the Middle School put up an in- formative skit based on world heart day. The students gave an insight to the whole students like –“we're ask- ing you to be a Heart Hero by making a promise ... a promise to make a simple change for your heart health”. Skit are great tools that allow children to think about the importance of acquiring good values, while having fun at the same time. They include values like respect, compassion towards others, fraternity, friend- ship and tolerance, among others. Through the skit grade 6B students gave the preventive measures that we take for the healthy heart. They also presented a song based on heart day.
Football is about sacrifice, dedication, a lot of work and friendship off the pitch. Inter-house football tournament was held this week ,almost entire girls of grades 6 to12 have participated in vari- ous category in this tournament.
Topic: Socio-Economic development of Ras Al Khaimah and historical sites in Ras Al Khaimah Students were given an opportunity to prepare a PowerPoint presentation on the topic and present in the class. Learning outcome: Students were able to iden- tify the historical places located at Ras Al Khaimah. The activity developed confidence and critical thinking among the learners. Scope was given for interaction where students shared their experiences of visiting the histori- cal place in and around the Emirates. The aims of the personal projects are to allow students to demonstrate the personal abilities and skills required to produce and present an extra piece of work. Based on UAE\"s sustainable development students presented their individual projects. Students acquired the ability to make links across different areas of knowledge and to generate, develop and evaluate ideas and information.
The students of Grade 7 A have eagerly participated in this speaking skill activity. They shared their learnt knowledge about the chapter The last Leaf. It is a story about a person having hope and spreading hope amongst others. A hope for positivity , a hope for life. Students enhanced their learning by how a small ray of hope can build or create others confi- dence to strive in this world. Revision Time : Grade 6 students revise their math concepts for half yearly examination by sharing their knowledge and understanding of each concepts . They solved different level of questions and discussed the solutions among their peers.
Questioning Strategy: Asking and Answering Questions. Being able to ask and an- swer students' questions is an important part of teaching and learning. Asking questions helps to motivate students' curiosity about the topic and at the same time helps the teacher to assess their understanding of the material. The ability of students to express their views and thoughts is generated through questioning them. Questioning strategy helps to develop the students critical thinking skills . It also stimulate students to pursue knowledge on their own and ask their own questions. Students of grade 6 used questioning strategy to reinforce the topic taught in the class It generate greater participation and increase student-student interactions.
