While not submitted to the Nebraska Test Lab, the Best Company later rated the Sixty belt at 77 HP. This increase was most likely due to the change to offset rocker arms which allowed for longer engine valve cycles. As the Sixty increased in both power and weight, the structural dimensions stayed the same. Even with the added weight the Sixty maintained its ease of handling and smooth steering. A Calfornia Tinman By Mike Meyer Iwas back in the beautiful Salinas Valley of For those of us trying to save these California in June and took the opportunity to old crawlers, finding new tinwork like visit Scott Flint, a very interesting guy. I’d heard fenders, hoods, seat boxes and track a lot of good things about Scott, in particular, guards that not only fit right, but look folks have been talking about his business making right too, is a huge challenge. Off the aftermarket sheet metal reproduction parts for shelf parts for these older Cats are no our old Cats, Holts and Bests. longer available from Caterpillar and often the original sheet metal on our Scott Flint and Wally Adams. project tractors is missing or rotted away after sitting out in the weather for 80 or 90 years, so we rely on mangled, busted, bent and rusted scraps to use as templates to get new parts made. Usually that works out okay, but it can be time consuming to find an experi- enced sheet metal shop interested in taking on that challenge, and incred- ibly expensive when we get the bill for small custom jobs, so spending $2,000 or more for a new set of fenders for a D4, or just one hood is not unusual. When I heard that Scott was making new sheet metal for old Cats, Holts and Bests that was of a very high quality at very reasonable prices, I thought other members of ACMOC would appreciate knowing about him too. I took a few photos that day to share because even though I’ve had new tinwork made here in Australia for my old Cats over the years, I had never actually had the opportunity to see what tooling and machines were used to create those complex curves and folds. I found it very fascinating. What really surprised me was the number of special dies Scott has had professionally made over the years, and the high cost of procuring them. There were racks and racks of them. Each set of dies costing thousands of dollars can be easily damaged. Then there were all the jigs and patterns needed to accurately recreate these parts for the older machines made up until the 1960s. It’s not just a matter of accurately folding or rolling sheet steel. There are usually lots of cut outs, bolt holes and often fluting required to cre- ate the perfect part, like an engine side cover. 26 Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club Issue 147

The three dies required to create new engine side covers whose lou- vers can come in 3 different lengths, depending on the tractor model, cost over $5,000 alone, just for the dies. As I looked around Scott’s shop I was trying to imagine the cost involved in setting up his business just to make new tinwork for our old crawlers. I con- servatively estimated $100,000 had been spent and Scott didn’t disagree. What really impressed me about Scott and his fabrications was his attention to detail, not just in making the parts, but in the way he created strong, indi- vidual wooden packing boxes for safe shipping. It is obvious he is as passion- ate about saving old crawlers as we are as he has several old Cats himself that he is restoring. As we were talking that day I could hear clearly that Scott re- ally enjoyed a great relationship with his customers, many of whom have be- come great friends over the years and he sincerely appreciated the support of everyone who had bought his parts. How- 28 Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club ever, even after many years of opera- tion and a reputation second to none, there are very few of us ACMOC folks utilizing his fabrications. It would be a tragedy if we lost Scott and his unique business because there is no one out there in the world who could quickly step up and fill his shoes selling merely a handful of parts each year. I often joke that you need to be a little bit soft in the head to try and save old Cats. I know I am and my long suffering wife Anna the Saint agrees. Still it’s some- thing I really enjoy doing and it allows me to meet interesting, talented arti- sans like Scott along with other skilled collectors who help me on the journey. That makes it all worthwhile. I feel oth- er ACMOC members will benefit from hearing about these folks who I have met in my travels. The day I visited Scott, another highly respected West Coast collec- tor, Wally Adams, stopped by and it was great to see him again. Wally and I first met around 2009 or 2011 and over the years we have stayed in con- tact, mostly through the ACMOC online Bulletin Board. Wally is an excellent source for good used parts from old gas Cats that he dismantles. He also is a source of Caterpillar technical in- formation gleaned from his parts busi- ness and has assembled a collection of the different faces of oil pressure gauges used by Cat from 1925 through 1960. He also maintains a collection of the caps used on air cleaners for the gas Cats in the 1920s and 1930s, small important details that are critical to know if your restoration is to be ac- curate. My visit with Scott and Wally was a great experience that I am happy to share with the membership around the world. If you thought obtaining new en- gine side panels was an impossibility, give Scott a call at (831)-636-8986 for some well built replacements. Good luck with your restorations. Issue 147
