It was sitting right there.” He said his Sixty was out at his deer camp about 15 miles away, and had been there since 1959. Well we did a little more talking and it turned out he had a set of NEW track pads for the Sixty piled up under a tarp and said they were going for scrap. We made a deal on the pads and decided we would go look at the Sixty when I came back with my old pickup to get the pads. When I came back a couple weeks later we went out to the camp. Dan’s boys came with a detachable gooseneck and I used my D4D dozer to load things. Dan’s boys were very professional and Dan should be very proud of them. I had a lot of stuff that went to the scrapyard, but most all the Caterpil- lar stuff found new homes. After I got moved to Upper Michigan, I started missing my Cats. I found a 1932 Ten and poured my time and treasure into it. All B.S. aside, it’s a really nice ma- chine. I understand that Dan Wilhelm and I have something else in common, be- yond just the Sixty. I have that Ten in- side my living room and Dan has a Two Ton in his family room! Those are sto- ries for another day. Neither the old guy in Republic nor I had any idea how this deal came to be, but to this day I will SWEAR I saw that Ghost Cat sitting out by the main road! Now that I am the old guy, I was really happy to see it on the cover of the Cat Club magazine. SO Thanks to Dan Wil- helm and his boys for saving this piece of Yooper History! Filing Cabinet From the Archives Starting with this issue of the maga- zine, we will be highlighting historic Caterpillar (and pre-Caterpillar) items and literature that will be relevant to ACMOC readers. In this issue, we are featuring an operating manual for C.L. Best Tracklayers from Theo. H. Davies & Co. based out of Honolulu and Hilo, Hawaii. With roots going back to 1845, the Theo. H. Davies & Co. was not a Best dealership, but involved in sugarcane plantations, where the tracklayers were used, throughout the 19th and early 20th century. They remained heavily involved in sugarcane until the 1970s when the company diversified by open- ing Hawaiian franchises for Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, as well as Mercedes- Benz and Jaguar. 28 Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club Issue 144
