ePharmacy Story - Nishit Rajbhandari ePharmacy – Medicine + Health + Beauty is a one-stop digital healthcare solution retailing a wide range of medications, supplements, beauty products, etc. through its website - www.epharmacy.com.np and mobile apps. We started our journey about two years ago as a small startup. Since we started off small, we didn’t have many expectations in terms of sales volume. We were more focused on bringing awareness to services like this. While we were struggling with the unknown challenges of online pharmacy, pandemic happened! The first lockdown was very confusing for us. The government regulations were unclear and figuring out how to resume our work was perplexing. On top of it, family members were worried about letting us work or even leave the house. After about 2 weeks, all of us mustered up the courage, made a well thought-out plan, and resumed work. Taking all precautions, following all the norms we started and since then we have just been steadily marching forward. The habitual change that we were trying so hard to bring into the market happened because of the pandemic. People had no option but to order things online: from groceries to medicine to other essentials. This opportunity not only felt like a boost to our business but also gave us a sense of social responsibility. We were dealing with an essential commodity and we needed to be prepared to help people; not just make money out of it! Due to Covid-19, most people lost their work or had to shut down their businesses, but for us, we had our own set of challenges. We had issues in procuring, especially medicines, as imports had gone down. During the first lockdown, we barely had any stock but we learned our customers’ needs and started stocking up essentials. As order kept piling, we had to hire more staff, mainly delivery personnel. There were times when some of our own team member and/or their family members tested positive. This caused a lot of emotional and psychological turmoil for us. Despite these challenges, what mattered to us was the appreciation we have received from our customers from all over Nepal. Sometimes we worked for more than 16 hours a day, we worked on weekends and public holidays, all this hard work feels justified knowing we are making lives easier for many people. 51

Powerful Lessons - Charu Chadha When our TV screens were flooded over a year ago with painful images of people struggling to breathe and beat an unknown virus, the world was united in anguish, horror and panic. We were all just trying to make sense of it all. 2020 was a year that put us on the brink of an extreme test of resilience. We had to understand new terminologies, follow safety and hygiene protocols and adhere to lockdown measures. The government was not saying much, the medical system was overstrained, and the economy nose-diving. People were losing lives and livelihoods and we did not know and still do not know when and if this will end. What is certain is that life - as we know it - has changed. But in all the frailty and the chaos, Covid taught us a few powerful lessons. We learned about finding strength, about quiet acceptance, and not giving in. We learned that we may be individuals but we are part of a collective story. We learned to stay home and appreciate the little things just as we learned to realize the freedoms that come from being human that we so often took for granted. We understood the things that truly matter and the things that we are ready to fight for, even as we readied ourselves to let go of what we thought was once important. We also learned to reach out and look out for each other. For me, the biggest understanding was that we have a very powerful gift – that of being human. Ours is a shared humanity and that is something we must not forget. Today if a person suffers or dies of hunger, illness, cold or abandonment, it is our shared failure. Life is unpredictable. One day all’s well with your world and the next you are faced with an insurmountable challenge. Ask someone fighting for their lives in a hospital bed what freedom means, ask someone who has lost a loved one what they would not do for just another moment. I am learning to live each moment as my last, to be absolutely present in the now, to hear, feel, touch, see and taste life with mindfulness. And today more than ever, I know that when we share our fears, grief and pain, we become more humane and stronger. And beyond everything that can ever happen to us, life is still magical. 52

Bir Hospital Ward - Kushal Man Shrestha I had been resting on my bed for a couple of months due to a severe injury on my left knee ligament and I was absolutely gutted. The first lockdown went with this feeling of guilt. During the second lockdown, Hami Nepal came as an opportunity for me. I saw this as a platform where I can contribute some of my time and effort and help in making even the smallest difference to someone’s life. I had convinced my extremely worried parents that I would volunteer visit for a day. The entire Covid ward project was completely a new experience for me. When we started, the only thing there was, was the building itself, and we had to bring in every equipment and resources from various places. The four days spent inside this building were always hectic and full of chaos. There were 35 volunteers working to build this ward, and it was not an easy task. At the end of the 4th day, we were able to shift and assemble 150 hospital beds along with mattresses, pillows, and sheets, IV stands, bedside lockers, monitors, and so on. The main reason we started this project was that the situation of Covid was worsening as it peaked and there were not enough hospitals to treat the mass infected population. We were receiving calls for beds availability, cylinders, ICUs, concentrators and so on every day, and it did not feel good at all. Bir Hospital was already on the verge of making their new building the Covid ward. However, we see every now and then that the government works too slowly to respond to any scenario. So, we volunteered to assist the hospital in providing manpower, and doing labor work so that the Covid ward was ready to treat the serious Covid patients in time. The entire experience regarding the Covid ward was somehow bittersweet. We worked hours sweating out in the building, with the hope that people will benefit from health facilities at least to a certain extent. We grew strong as a team with high spirits to help the society in any possible way. 53

Our Duty in this Time - Ashok Chandra Dhunju Since, 2076 Chaitra 19, Nepal introduced lockdown and restrictions occasionally to limit the spread of Covid-19. However, ease of restrictions has increased the mobility of people, leading to rising cases. Covid-19 has also economically impacted all the sectors. Millions of people have lost their jobs, which have affected socio-economic conditions of many families. People have no choice but to return to their work to support their daily living. In such a situation, staying safe by following public health directions is the only option for survival. The fear of the disease has impacted all the people and including me. I have been attempting to stay away from the disease by remembering to follow the safety measures. It is disappointing to learn about people and their families being affected by the virus. It is certainly difficult to be restricted at home due to the lockdown. However, indoor activities such as writing articles, reading books, attending virtual meetings, interacting via social media have kept me engaged and occupied. I believe having optimistic thoughts, performing yoga or light exercise are necessary to maintain mental and physical health. Covid-19 has transformed education-teaching is now online. Student assessments are also moving forward online with a lot of trial and error and uncertainty for everyone. It is a massive blow not only to parents’ productivity but also to children’s social life and education. As mentioned, the socio-economic of the people have been adversely affected due to the pandemic. This has impacted more the families with low socio-economic status which has posed difficulty for students to afford educational materials. Therefore, I was focused towards doing something for the students at community schools. I was able to support 150 students with guidebooks for their studies through support of an organisation I am associated with, Be Educated Movement Nepal. I arranged tuition sessions on English and Maths in 5 community schools when the lockdown was lifted last year, following safe social distancing measures. I also distributed 3000 washable cloth masks to the students. I have supported additional students in other community schools affected by the current situation. The pandemic may not continue for long but this will mentally effect us all for a while. Therefore, in the current situation, we should forget the differences and work together in supporting each other and in developments. We should remember that helping people with their problems is one of the greatest contributions and differences we can make in our lives. 54

Reminiscing Ujwal Thapa Dai - Aalok Subedi Great Move! Use this as a precedent into opening the digital economy.” These were the last words of Ujwal dai to me in reference to our conversation about the writ petition at Supreme Court to allow e-commerce to operate before he went unconscious at Grande Hospital. The next thing we know, we had to move him to Medicity for a critical last stage procedure (ECMO). Doctors had told us that there was not much hope as most of his lungs were beyond healing, but we weren’t going to give up. As every single minute passed while staying outside the hospital waiting to hear from doctors, I couldn’t help but think about how much he meant to me and the level of support coming from around the globe just showed how huge impact he had created in about a decade. On the 3rd day at medicity, his health had deteriorated, sensory organs had stopped responding, and ECMO wasn’t helping much. Doctors asked if close family members wanted to see him one last time. We requested one of the doctors if we could shave his beard so that the last picture of him in his family’s memory will be a good one. After Bhauju and Aama bid last goodbye, we went to see him. The entire 5-minute walk to his bed felt like hours where all the flashbacks of me talking to him on messenger and then meeting him in California for the first time to the day I promised him that I was moving back to Nepal. I sat there grabbing his hand trying to gather enough courage to say my last words. After a while I started talking to him as if he wasn’t unconscious, and as if he would respond back hoping for a miracle to happen. After the first few sentences, I couldn’t help my cry of despair as I promised him that I would carry his vision and complete our unfinished projects. With a heavy heart, we left. The next day, once doctors announced his demise, me and Iih sat inside the ambulance heading towards Pashupati Aryaghat, both in denial. As his dad had asked us to carry out the final rituals, I kissed his feet and bowed down while he was on the funeral pyre. And then came the toughest thing that I ever had to do. But with Ranju on the side, with tears in my eyes, and heavy heart, we gathered enough strength to offer daagbatti to him and then just sat there in disbelief for hours, not knowing what the world would be like without our Superman. His last caption on the instagram post just kept floating in my head. 55

Let’s Call it Karuna, not Corona - Karna Shakya This generation is really going through many historic experiences. There was an earthquake in 2015 and now there is a worldwide pandemic. Our generation is going through it all, so I believe that whatever this generation is facing is a boon because we are understanding the problem and bringing out solutions to create a better future. I personally have not suffered from Coronavirus, and I will not share a sad story. I want to share the positive aspects of it. We, Nepali people are very cultured and golden-hearted. We all gave food to people and made generous donations. To us being human was the first priority, seeing the youth involvement in spreading kindness and food really reinstated hope in mankind. This was one of the best examples of “KARUNA” which means care rather than Corona. Another positive development was in the medical system. In such a short span of time, they have developed the field massively. Being a science student myself, I was never into religion or faith. However, during this lockdown, I was in tune with myself and understood about having faith. I could feel the presence of God and started believing in “After life”. I started being optimistic and believed that people should not be pessimistic. Even during uncertainty, it has made me strong and given me positive energy. Doing yoga and meditation helped me a lot. I was never fully at peace when I was doing business but due to lockdown, I learned to listen to my own intuitions. However, working in the tourism business for so many years, I always thought that international people were tourists. But it was the internal tourists who were the main tourists. Nepalese are very fond of eating and drinking. I realized the importance of Internal Tourism as a factor for development during this process. Sadness will come and go. But life’s a journey so even if a pandemic keeps coming and going, we should be able to tackle the problems and move forward. We have been the agents for destroying Mother Earth, so no wonder we are all going through a deadly pandemic. 78

Working Together for Betterment of Women - Lily Thapa Covid has not been easy for anyone and it was not easy for me. During the first-wave lockdown, I contracted Covid-19. After healing. I could have stayed-in, but having a helpful nature, I could not stay still during such a difficult time. Together with my team, we went to slum areas of Kathmandu valley, where people were most affected and in dire need of food supplies. People living in slums are dependent on daily wages for food. They were unable to get the supplies for themselves and their family, so we started distributing food and relief materials. We even put forward a meeting with the Ward chairperson of the slum areas to ensure that they were getting food. We conducted a quick survey with WHO, targeting single women or single parents. We found out that most of them have rented a single room with their children. Findings also showed that they were unable to go out to buy food for couple of days because they did not have enough money or didn’t have work to earn wages. We were filled with sorrow, and we couldn’t even write or record these cases to report to WHO. There were cases of their family members going far away in search of work. They were unable to return for weeks or more, so they went by without eating or getting only one meal per day. They would usually come to get food provided by NGOs or governmental agencies. But we were able to complete the survey successfully and supply enough food. It was even more difficult when we went to survey single women who had contracted the virus. They were segregated or forced to leave their room by the tenant. They were not even allowed to visit the local shops in the community. They stayed in hostels until their results were negative. Such adversities gave them mental stress. We also tried to help them in whatever way possible because we felt any form of help counts during these times. 79

Online Delivery - KHETI Kheti is an agro-food tech digital platform, a flagship product of DV Excellus. A web and mobile-based online platform with three applications such as Kheti Farm, Kheti Food and Farm management tools. It integrates the entire value chain in food production and consumption, bridging the gap between farmers and consumers. We believe in the vision of collaboration as our tagline ‘together we excel’, we have an integrated solution for all the agro-ecosystem players to interact and engage on a common digital-platform. When the government imposed lockdown, we were confused and in a state of panic, if we were to continue with our services. Having an integral responsibility in the value and supply chain in food business, we did not halt our services. Our biggest challenge was the uncertainty, as rules changed every day, affecting our business. Applying for vehicle permits helped in delivering essentials like vegetables, fruits and groceries. Kheti’s core members put their heart and soul for the procurement till delivery using private vehicles. Later, when home-delivery were set for a limited time, Metropolitan Traffic Police understood our cause and supported in every possible way. We received good number of transactions in terms of Kheti Food. Meanwhile, Kheti Farm suffered losses in crores. We were not allowed to deliver farming-products to farmers both inside and outside valley. Regardless of the losses, we are happy that our services made lives easy for many. Farmers could not find a proper marketplace to sell their produces without transportation. Blessings from farmers was one milestone that we achieved. Not letting their yields go waste, we could bring smiles to their faces. Fresh produce was picked from Mulpani, Chandragiri, Lele, Chobar, Bhaktapur and Gundu, prioritizing risk-free delivery to the doorstep of the consumers. Our hassle- free services contributed to the nation and humanity where people could stay home and save lives. It feels good to be a business that is not just profit-oriented but that gives importance to charitable services for Covid-19 patients, front-liners and social organizations. We are thankful to all the farmers for connecting their produce with us and consumers for supporting our local farmers. Sincere appreciations to all the government bodies who supported us during the difficult times. We are forever grateful to all the members of Kheti who stood by us during the time of crisis, with zeal to reach our vision towards sustainable agriculture and food system in Nepal. 80

Pregnancy and Delivery - Meghna Rana I don’t know if I am fortunate or unfortunate enough to have a baby around second Lockdown period and got pregnant during first lockdown period. I was staying in Butwal alone during pregnancy. Due to Covid-19 fear I didn’t even get my pregnancy checked as there were restrictions in hospital visits. My Husband is DSP in the Police force and he is a very passionate civil servant who hardly has time for family. The trauma of 1st baby miscarriage was always there in the back of my head and in the mean-time there was the trauma of Covid-19 during my delivery time. I gave birth by C-Section. I went to my maternal house for support. But my whole family caught Covid-19, we live in a joint family and I was the only one who was asymptomatic. My grandma, big aunt, brother, dad and mom, all, were very sick. In spite of going thorough maternity care and my son, I had the duty to find ICU beds for them. During the midst of pandemic, it was incredibly difficult to find ICU, I tried especially hard for grandma and aunt. I had no time to take care of my baby and myself. Doctor had advised me to keep baby with myself, so I was cooking, cleaning, taking care of all families and managing hospital, oxygen, medicine and baby all at the same time. Sometimes I didn’t even have time to go to the restroom, I broke down so many times, alone. I forgot about the maternity care as well, and I would change the clothes of my baby only in three days. Even after all this, my grandma passed away. It devastated as my husband couldn’t come home because he was in-charge in Butwal. My big aunt had blood cancer and she became senseless, lost movement and hardly recognized anyone. My brother and dad were bedridden. So, this Covid-19 left a void in my life but also came as beautiful dawn and blessed me with my lovely daughter, who brought my living a life. 81

Learning Skill Amidst Pandemic - Aarav Rajbhandari As people around the globe stay home, transportation, business, and several major industries have shut down temporarily, Mother Nature is taking a ‘Breath’ and enjoying a bit of a break. I believe “Mother Nature is healing “ We are witnessing dramatic changes in the environment and the natural world. There is a reduction in air and water pollution as animal habitats are thriving. Innovations are showing up in unique ways and talking about myself, I am enjoying life from a different perspective. Lockdown has taught me to adapt to change in difficult times and has also given me a chance to spend quality time with my grandparents, parents, siblings and cousins. Living in an extended family has helped me a lot in the current social situation. They have been helping me to take my online classes with ease, spending quality time despite their busy schedule. Amidst this pandemic, their moral support has helped me to adjust and adapt to the new normal. I passed my sixth grade without meeting teachers physically which I regret. I was introduced to online classes where I discovered my love for computer coding. Although the new study system was complicated, students and teachers tried and adapted to the virtual learning process. Though it doesn’t provide the same environment and interaction as physical classes and is not as enjoyable, at the end of the day, I know that in every circumstance there is always something to be thankful for. I miss my school, “Kasthamandap Vidhalaya”, my friends, teacher and playing football matches but I am also loving just being around my cousins and family. This time has taught me to adapt the things accordingly, taught me the value of living in an extended family, and given me a chance to learn new skills like playing guitar, sketching and learning the basic HTML, C++. At the end of the day, all you need is “HOPE AND STRENGTH”. Hope that it will get better and strengthen to hold on until it does. Stay safe and stay positive. 82

So Shall We - Baba Sarkar Shrestha A whiff of baking and spices hit my nostrils as I woke up. 11th April 2011, It was Mother’s Day in Nepal and my newly married son Avant and daughter-in-law Richa was preparing a surprise meal for me. I was feeling a bit under the weather but I shrugged it off and blamed it on the late-night movie I was watching. But as the hours passed, I started wheezing, coughing, had a scratchy sensation in the throat and a slight fever. By evening I was in bed feeling miserable and sorry for myself. The next day the sore throat and fever worsened. I took some anti-cold tablets with paracetamols and hoped I would recover in few days. I didn’t have Corona, I couldn’t have Corona; how could I? It was lockdown period in Kathmandu, and I had not stepped out of my house for weeks. All deliveries were transacted in the open air across a table in our lawn. We had heard the virus could linger on objects, so it was left outside to the extent possible and we scrubbed packed perishables with warm water and soap. We even got a sterilizing box. But I still isolated myself because if it was the flu, I did not want the whole household to be contaminated. Few days passed and my fever started shooting up to 103 degree F. I had the worst body ache, complete loss of appetite and diarrhea. I even started throwing up the few spoons of asparagus soup that I would force myself to eat. My husband Shyam called the doctors and lab technicians home. Blood culture was normal. Urine test showed I had infection and yes, I had the dreaded Covid-19. By the time I had lost my ability to perceive smell. It’s been almost two months and it’s still not back. As I laid in isolation, I counted myself lucky to be surrounded by family and friends who sent their wishes even though they could not physically be there. My husband, son, mother, sisters and brothers constantly called me on video chat just to look at my face. The raging fever subsided after two weeks. I could feel I was on my way to recovery. I was able to do a little breathing exercise, pranayam and anlombilom, which helped me tremendously. My angels in distress were my friends who had recently recovered from Corona too. They were the only people I wanted to talk to, ask for advice and constant reassurance. They completely understood and would boost up my morale by saying that what I was going through, they had experienced it too and they recovered, and so shall I. 83

Bihani Social Venture - Ritchie Sampson In 2017, I, Ritchie Sampson, was placed in Bihani Social Venture as a field worker as a part of my Bachelors in Social Work course. Before joining Bihani, I had not thought that ageing was something to be considered as an issue; or that we should be concerned about those aspects of ageing. But time spent in Bihani made me realise that ageing is a growing issue not only in our country, but around the world. Moreover, I got the chance to experience working with and for elders who have such a lot of experience and skills to share to us youths. Working with elders, for me, is like a day spent with family members because they treat us as theirs too. Each day spent with our members and elders is so fun, we tend to forget that we are working. But the Covid-19 lockdown changed the way we worked. Although our working process needed to be modified, our purpose has not changed, which is making them feel more included and less isolated. During the lockdown, social distancing was said to be the best precaution to minimize the spread. But we at Bihani believed and encouraged that “Social Distancing does not mean Social Isolation”. Even though the lockdown was in effect, Bihani and our team tried out best to stay active as it is important to stay connected, especially during such times. Whether it be by connecting virtually, or visiting elders and supporting them with essentials, we were actively engaged in our work. Although it was a risk for us as well, we took necessary precautions while working to ensure the needs of the elders were met while keeping our own health and safety in check. It was very inspiring to see our small efforts bring such joy and happiness to those we work with and this inspiration is what drives our team in doing what we do, that is, ensure that our elders feel valued, socially included and most of all, enjoy the 2nd half of their life after retirement. 84

Music Medicine - Deepak Bajracharya The band stayed quarantined after an abroad trip and so did I. We decided to do what we do best - music. The Musical Medicine was born. When UNICEF reached out to us, it was hard to imagine that our effort started from a room, through our phones, trying to give people hope, a mere informal gig, has now turned into The Musical Medicine Show (TMMS). Sharing all aspects of my Corona journey; I witnessed few bumps at the very beginning. Just when TMMS was gearing up to start, it happened. I was Covid positive! It came true for myself, my wife Amira, my daughter and the band members. It felt helpless to be unable to change what was happening. Right when festivities were approaching, my Covid severity got even scarier when hospital beds were not available. Along came my struggles to keep my morale in check. Being anxious didn’t help at all. Despite it all, I made sure to stay in touch with my “doctor” mates, Dr. Dipak Shrestha, Dr. Raju Dangol, Dr. Amit Shakya, Dr. Anil Pokhrel for constant counseling. After a terror that lasted 3 weeks, we were all finally recovering. My takeaway from this story: the best medicine to Covid, apart from medical attention, is mental stability. That’s when I started counseling my friends going through the same. Adding to the bright side, TMMS became a great way to reach the audience’s heart to make up for an unpleasant pandemic experience. The overall support was overwhelming. From “When is your next music releasing” to “How is your family doing”, my rapport with my followers had grown stronger. Pandemic sure drained me physically & mentally, but I received a sense of finer things in life - my children, parents, in-laws, relationship with fellow artists and my audience. Nothing felt like a bigger blessing when 400+ families from around the world grooved to Man Magan. While the health risks are there, being in this together helps. We’ll all be living our separate lives very soon. Amid it all, I urge you to see beyond the storm and take it as an opportunity to turn to family, friends and loved ones. We’ll soon be receiving the aid of 30 million masks in collaboration with Yale University and a few personalities. I hope it changes something in these harsh times. Lastly. Stay close, stay connected. Not physically, but mentally. 85

My Love for Mountains - Kalpana Maharjan I was born and brought up in a conservative newar town in Lalitpur. I had never been outside of my village until I took up journalism. Climbing Everest was beyond my imagination. I climbed Mount Everest twice and set up the world record as the “First female journalist to climb Everest from both the South side on 23rd May 2018, (9th Jestha 2075) and the North side on (23rd May 2019, 9th Jestha 2076)”. I have started liking mountaineering and have been working on sites by joining a trekking company, “Experience Outdoors Nepal pvt. ltd.” which organizes trekking and mountaineering trips in and around Nepal. My relation with the mountains began in 2014 when I had participated in a first inter-media wall climbing competition and grabbed the first position. By then I had my three months old baby boy. I climbed “Mera” peak, 6476m high; as my preparatory mission to Everest without letting my family know. Being a novice climber from Kathmandu, I was forced into coma for seven days due to severe high-altitude sickness. People hardly believed that I would survive. My family prohibited me from going back to the mountains again. I struggled a lot to convince my family. My second Everest expedition was a historic one that provided me an opportunity to carry the flags of Lalitpur Metropolitan City and A Centenarian Scholar Satya Mohan Joshi on their 100th year of establishment and centennial birthday. I carried a slogan - A Campaign Against Child Marriage through Education. I got busier attending talk programs at colleges and corporate firms as a motivational speaker, sharing experiences. But Covid-19 global pandemic has halted me and the world. There is no way that I go out of my house. I utilized this time to stay at home and spend time with my family. I had hardly spent so much time with my family. I am working to promote my cause, raise funds and also help people against the Covid-19 pandemic. I pray that this pandemic will ease out soon and I can go out to work in the mountains again. 86

Getting Infected - Sunaina Shakya I am Sunaina Shakya, a nursing staff at Sahid Gangalal National Heart Hospital where I have been working for the last seven years. I am sharing my story as a nurse and a daughter-in-law who is working as a front liner during the pandemic. In my line of work, I have faced many ups and downs, but never had I ever imagined such a day would come where an unknown virus would not only destroy our daily lives but also bring down the whole medical infrastructure to its knees. Everyone’s life is on the edge, but the risk is higher for us and on top of that, trying to manage home and work during such a crisis is another battle we are fighting against. When people were struggling to wear a mask for an hour, we had little choice but to wear double masks, eye shields and PPEs continuously for over 12 hours. There’s always a fear while taking care of a Covid patient, but if we don’t, who will? We have put ourselves and our family member’s lives at risk. The anxiety of transmitting it to family members exceeds more than getting self-infected. Even with all the precautions, I got infected last year. There was very little research about the genome and the world was still trying to figure it out. When I got the mild symptoms, I initiated the PCR test and my biggest fear manifested into reality; I was positive. I realized; I might have already spread the virus at home. So, on the same day, we got everyone tested and unfortunately, my mother-in-law along with my 2-year-old daughter tested positive. My mother- in-law was critical and we needed to admit her to the ICU urgently with BIPAP on. Finding an ICU bed was another battle that we had to fight. For a month, my family and I faced one of the most traumatic experiences that I had ever witnessed as a nurse. By the grace of God, we recovered but everyday we, as the front liners are still at the battle grounds, fighting the unknown and with every mutation, it is only getting harder. 87

Painting in Lockdown - Saanvi Shrestha I am Saanvi Shrestha, studying in grade 9 at St. Xavier’s school, Jawalakel. I love painting, sketching, drawing mandala and swimming. I first explored my interest in painting when I was in grade 7 (age 12). I have been painting ever since. I am a keen swimmer, who loves each training session and practice. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I could not been able to continue my swimming training session, which I regret the most. I am really looking forward to normalcy, when I can rejoin my swimming session and meet my friends. I enjoy visiting new places and my father makes sure we visit new locations for every vacation. Yes, this does make me feel sad as I can’t explore many new places with my family and can’t meet my close ones but I often facetime with my friends, play online games with them, watch movies together through the app-discord. Just waiting for the day when my friends and I can have a reunion. Staying home all day, having no outdoor activities is very boring, therefore I tried keeping myself busy by watching painting tutorials on YouTube and practicing them. It worked as a therapy for me, I started spending hours and hours painting and fell in love with the art I created. I still remember my first painting - I painted a scenery of a beach, it turned out to be so wonderful that my parents felt proud of my work. They appreciated my effort and I was thrilled to hear their compliments. Like they always do, they encouraged me to make more paintings and sketches; I started practicing more. Days passed by, I started making mandala. Finding the art really interesting, I started making series of them. During the pandemic, I got time to reflect on myself, I fell in love with painting and creating mandalas, which on normal days would be hard to focus on with the limited time due to school assignments. 88

Not Giving Up - Leela Gurung I am Leela Gurung, the founder of Kevin Rohan Memorial Eco Foundation. I want to share about the effects of Covid-19 which caused us difficulty. Our goal is to create and implement eco-friendly programs designed to promote and encourage sustainable community development in order to influence and nurture a fundamental kinship with the environment in our local community and throughout Nepal as a whole. We had many projects, but one of the very notable projects founded by Krishna Gurung is about Biodynamic farming. This Farming uses a holistic, ecological approach to agriculture by focusing on improving soil fertility to produce healthier plants and, in turn, healthier individuals. Krishna visited 42 countries and attended lectures and trainings. He came back to teach the practices he learnt locally and internationally. Students from all over the world, especially, from Switzerland, United states of America and Germany used to come to Nepal for training and practice. We also had volunteers from Taiwan. We invited volunteers to learn about the sustainable way of doing agriculture. Sadly, things took a turn when our international volunteers were unable to come to Nepal for their training. It caused us financial problems as the funds from the international volunteers were sustaining our organisation. It created difficulties for income generation for staff who worked in our organisation. We had to introduce full time and part time basis payment system. Staff who came to the field for agriculture were paid according to the time spent working. Some were paid based on cleaning our cafeteria. We saw a reduction in manpower as we didn’t have any volunteers, so taking care of the plants was cut down to small groups of people only. Despite these experiences, we haven’t lost hope. We are managing the salaries of staff through our savings and cafeteria products. We are focusing more on local income by incorporating with many people locally for agricultural products. We are happy that we received support and donations from our friends and family as well. 89

Every Sector is Impacted - Haribansha Acharya Introducing myself first, Namaste, I am Haribansha Acharya, an actor and a comedian from Nepal. Coronavirus has stopped the world from functioning but for developing nations like ours, it has made life difficult to cope with. Being an actor, it really worries me what will happen to our film industry as it is currently suffering. Cinema halls are closed and uncertainty is looming over. We have invested so much in this industry. We are not certain when the theaters will open or will actors even go back to their normal lives? Not just actors, everyone who works in this industry hopes that things go back to normal soon. Initially, people enjoyed the pandemic. They posted videos of cooking but it saddened me to see us deviating from reality. Being a developing nation, the fact that the poor population were suffering while we enjoyed it caused me grief. I did suffer from the first variant of Covid-19. Along with me, my wife also contracted the virus. The only space empty in my house was the balcony. Our son used to make food and serve us outside the room. It was very sudden. For me especially, being used to working for 18 hrs for programs, it suddenly felt like I was in house arrest. It really was mentally stressful. The feeling of being treated as untouchables was harsh, since I am very used to being touched or taken photographs with. The positive part about Covid-19 was, I finally got to rest after many years. I got the time to spend with my wife at our village home. We enjoyed the quality time by planting plants and writing my new book after the success of my past publication. Nepal being a culturally rich country, we have many festivals therefore, to control the spread of Covid-19, we should be more cautious regarding celebrating festivals. Major portal should be taken and Festivals should be celebrated within core family members. Furthermore, I would like to request all the authorities responsible to prioritize the health of the civilians and do the needful to arrange vaccinations and get the citizens vaccinated. Any gathering like parties, political rally, seminar or events should be stopped for a certain time. Instead, campaign and awareness programs regarding vaccines should be started. 90

This too Shall Pass - Rachana Thapa Like many people, I went through this tumultuous time last year, September 2020, to be exact. No amount of information can prepare us, but here I would like to share my Covid-19 story. Despite taking the utmost care and precautions, I, along with my husband and our younger daughter got infected with Covid-19 last year. We had decided to test everyone on the 3rd day of showing symptoms. Despite the precautions, we three, tested positive. I still recall the hours of results were stressful and chaotic as we were mostly asymptomatic. We were petrified that we may infect our elder in-laws, so we decided to move into isolation outside our home. We made sure to trace and test those who were in contact with us for safety purposes. Thankfully, no one tested positive. I still remember those three weeks spent in ISOLATION. Each day was a waiting game, an anxiety-filled, tiring experience. For me, I was constantly worried about my husband and daughter because I feared we may have to suffer more in the hospital. No matter how prepared you are, we are all confused and lost when trying to tackle this virus. I realized that we have access to so much information which induces fear amongst ourselves and on how we can protect ourselves from the virus. The truth is: having been affected, the virus is 100 % REAL and I have seen my family struggling for life. I am shunning everyone who treats this as a conspiracy theory and not a real disease. Belittling the virus would seem like it’s an insult to those who survived the virus. Through this story, I wish to share the effects of the virus, create awareness, and prepare to be mentally strong too. Do not wait, get tested on time, if you have symptoms or believe you were exposed to Corona. I was able to overcome those difficult times with the support of my amazing friends and family, who checked on us and made sure we were not feeling emotionally low during quarantine days. Stay strong and this too shall pass. 91

QR 652 - Bipin Kayastha I am Bipin Kayastha, my story of Covid-19 started with Qatar Airways flight QR652 when I was coming back from the USA with my mom and dad. I was placed with Nepal’s second Covid-19 patient Prasiddhi. Back then Covid was so hyped that people were very scared of any Covid related news. After we came back, Prassiddhi, my flight seatmate was diagnosed with Covid-19. The government started tracking everyone from that flight. There were five people from Kavre, three of us from our family, one from Nala and one passenger named Soni. Soni was not found as she had a passport made from Kavre and she’s been living elsewhere, so they were rigorously searching for Soni and others. The unfortunate thing happened when the bureaucrats started a search campaign where they notified all the journalists and citizens from Kavre. From there on the harassment began, people started a boycott campaign against my family. Even the relatives started arguing with us saying “why did you give us chocolate from the USA?”. People at that time became so evil that even the purest love like giving chocolate became a curse. I and my family were receiving nonstop calls. My wife got so annoyed that she used to sneeze on the call, knowingly. People started sharing my pictures on facebook saying “searching” for this guy, “he brought Covid to Nepal.” I had seen the most pathetic behavior imaginable from my friends, relatives and neighbors and we were not even tested. The testing of Covid was not even possible at that time, we had waited for 2 weeks for PCR kits to be flown in from China. During the checking process also we got harassed, we were the first to be tested in Nepal, and all the doctor, nurse and health personnel ran away, we were forced to stay in the scorching heat for hours when we were there to do the PCR test. Only one man came forward who seemed like he was going to the moon as an astronaut. We were finally tested for Covid, we turned out to be negative and lived happily ever after. 92

Go Green, Ride Cycle - Kunal Shrestha I still reminisce about the time my brother used to take me to school on his cycle. Since then, I have started to like cycling. Coming from a middle-class family, we could not afford to buy a cycle. I was not able to ask my parents to buy me one either. But my passion for cycling didn’t stop me from watching cycling races on TV. This inspired me to become a good mountain “biker”. Life keeps moving on and is full of ups and downs. Unemployed life was stressful. Miraculously, I found a job but the Coronavirus hit the world. My life felt like it stopped; it was very difficult for me to cope with the lockdown. After the first lockdown, I started working in a company as a Social Media Handler. My sister’s friend helped me get the job. My perception of the world changed after working there. I started having a positive outlook on life. I was eager to follow my dreams of cycling, therefore I saved money from the salary earned, researched a lot and got myself a good mountain bike. I bought my cycle through the installment process. I was super excited to receive my cycle before lockdown, but things went sideways as the second lockdown happened. Unsure of anything, I was tensed that I won’t be able to pay for the installment because my job was not secure. Still, the feeling of pure joy and happiness while riding my mountain bike took the pain and insecurity away from me. My dream and reality are different, yet, I am happy and content that I bought the mountain bike of my dreams. I love riding because I get to explore many places and I wish I can explore more beautiful places in the future. Even during lockdown, I went for a ride, I felt like nothing could stop me from achieving my dream. I want to learn more skills and stunts in mountain biking. Plus riding is good for your health. Like the saying goes “Health is Wealth”. Stay Safe! 93

Finding Calm Amidst the Chaos - Mimansha Joshi Covid seemed more like a blessing in disguise to me, like a gift to capitalize on the time given to me. The “Lockdown” was a perfect opportunity for me to stay home and reconnect with myself. I was privileged enough to work from home and did not feel the impact on my life. Initially, Nepal was lucky to have one or two cases. But eventually, the cases started to rise to create panic amongst people. During the lockdown, I reinvented my lifestyle. I explored my surroundings and created space to keep me occupied such as running, online courses, reading books, setting boundaries and yoga to quell anxiety and keep mental health in check. But, my effort to keep sane and reconnect was short-lived. With new positive cases, my anxiety grew but I accepted that the only thing constant in life is change, and tried to adapt to the changing environment. I am thankful for being able to keep myself safe but I sympathized with many families who had to risk themselves to survive. I constantly kept in mind that “Mindfulness” is the key. Doing yoga benefitted me a lot during these times. It helped me find deeper and spiritual connections. It certainly boosted immunity, energy levels, mind-body strengths, endorphins and happy hormones. Especially, strengthening my respiratory system and excelling in work. I still make sure I spend at least an hour, recognizing any tension in my body and brain, to relax every day. I practice asanas like “Virabhadrasana” or “Warrior” and “Sirsasana” or “Headstand” poses. Both these poses have taught me to view the Covid-life from a different perspective. Holding difficult poses taught me the fact that life can be challenging. But, once you adapt and become resilient, you come about stronger, just like how yoga makes you stronger. But, if there are poses that your body cannot do, simply let go! Because if an event in life is uncontrollable, accept it, honor your incapability to handle it and let go. I have noticed subtle transformation within me; breathing in positivity and breathing out negativity have changed how I think and feel. After much reflection, I found my calm amidst all the chaos! I am pleased to share this story and hope it will encourage, boost and provide the support and a blissful state that everybody needs – through yoga, during this pandemic. 94

A Visitor’s Agony - Sudin Bajracharya We slept in a tent, at the parking lot, right next to the Covid ICU where grandma rested. Three families shared the single tent, with one bed for each. We usually woke up at 5 to the sound of an elder visitor chanting prayers with the scent of incense pierced into a banana. And sometimes as we overslept, we woke up to the sound of an ICU nurse shouting our names for the Arterial Blood Gas Test. By the second week there, all of us had exchanged numbers just in case we weren’t outside the ICU when the nurses called. Nepal Korea Friendship Hospital was the closest hospital that we could trust. In the mornings, before we could wash our faces, on empty stomachs, we carried the blood-filled test tube to the lab. We tried to analyse the report printed on a long slip that resembled a credit card receipt. After the report, we gobbled down Chana and Anda, and had the tea to wash it down. We then waited outside the ICU, wondering who to call to replace us as visitors if we contract Corona. We waited for the nurse to come out with a hefty list of medicines, and I prayed that those medicines were in stock. In the first week, Covid cases peaked, our pharmacy ran out of Remdesivir, the only ‘treatment’ for Covid back then. Those of us with bikes, could hop hospitals around the town and even districts. Visitors without vehicles, either walked to the nearest hospital, or waited. We brought some extras back for those who stayed back. We saved every number that floated on social media for Remdesivir, Oxygen and ICU Ventilator, just in case of a worst-case scenario. The depressing time of the day was 3-4 pm, when the army came with a Hearse to collect deceased Corona patients. I saw two deaths every day. Deaths usually happened in the evenings. I always wondered who it would be today. Will it be us mourning today? I pray, no-one will have to go through such a despair. How Covid-19 Made me Grow - Indira Ranamagar The pandemic has been very challenging for me and my organization. My staff were scared to come to work and my daughter Subani was abroad for her studies, so I had to take care of the kids all by myself. With my foreign and Nepalese friends’ support, I was able to provide for my 200 kids and pay my staff their salaries. There were many more challenges though, like keeping the children safe from Covid infection and dealing with their anxiety. They couldn’t visit their parents in jails for more than a year as visits were restricted and they were missing their mothers. In addition, they couldn’t meet their peers at schools since they remained closed. I engaged them with activities, such as games, meditation, arts and music classes. What they love the most though is to play outside, in a little garden we have. In October 2020, I got infected and was hospitalized. But I never felt that I could die. I had a strong belief that nothing will happen to me and was determined to continue my work. My older kids started to support me in the field; in the program, we have been running ever since the pandemic started, cooking and delivering food to people who would otherwise suffer from hunger. We always took all the precautions by wearing proper masks, taking care of hygiene, sanitizing and eating nutritious food to build our immune system, and yet among the 17 children homes we run around the country, some members of my staff, as well as a few children, got Covid-19. This pandemic taught me that the challenges never cease in life but we always have to find a new way to adapt and not only survive the hardship but serve others, which helps us grow as humans. 96

My Entrepreneur’s Journey - Sushama Sharma It is not unheard of that establishing a business, “ceteris paribus”, requires years of constant hard work and devotion. And wherein a global pandemic is inserted into the equation, years could turn into decades. After devoting more than 15 years to the banking industry, I had embarked on my way to becoming an entrepreneur, few months prior to the pandemic taking its toll. Although I was overcoming challenges that came my way and moving ahead, the pandemic was set to push me back to the starting point, or even further behind. Uncertainty and chaos slowly started looming around. With everything shutting down, it was becoming harder and harder to land an opportunity. Overcoming all the awkward digital interactions, I somehow managed to bag an order for exporting goods to Japan. But the bigger question here was how was I supposed to deliver goods in a different country whilst the entire world was under lockdown. From sourcing of the goods to shipping them to the destination, the entire exercise was a huge task for me to complete. However, as people say, everything is possible with sheer hard work and dedication, I somehow managed to successfully export the order despite of all the hurdles and difficulties. Completing this first order was a huge boost for me psychologically as well as strategically as I landed more and more orders. And within less than a year, I was honored and awarded by the Prime Minister for best exporter of Ghee business to Japan. This came in as a surprise as well as an enormous sense of pride for me as I had never imagined myself to reach this height within this short time span and especially during such an uncertain time. In my opinion, consistent hard work, motivation to never back down and the positive attitude to handle any situation are some of the key factors to succeed at any point in life. And more importantly, one of the most crucial things that the pandemic taught me is the importance of having mental stability and positivity throughout, which helped me stay afloat during all this uncertainty and chaos. 97

Cricket Team Spirit - Gyanendra Malla While representing Nepal in ODI cricket tournament, we only got to play four matches before everything was shut down by the pandemic. This uncertainty hasn’t been of much help for us to stay prepared physically and mentally as athletes. We start from zero, reach a level, another wave hits. Then we’re back to square one. We hear every day about our rival nations already practicing way more than we are able to as the Covid cases rise. While the motivation isn’t at its best, a major question arises: Can we be prepared enough to qualify for the 2023 World Cup in these circumstances? All the hard work that goes behind a single game, is getting compromised by the combined pressure of Covid, and keeping our families safe. Along comes the pressure of having to prove myself as a sportsperson and a captain. The future of Nepali cricket relies on us. ODI journey requires a long-term strategy. Our cricket team does have more support from the authority as compared to so many other sports, but this still doesn’t count as a permanent solution. Looking on the bright side, it feels great to see our young players training and improving. Every player is making an effort to better themselves as an individual. When we are constantly on the field, we get less time to think for ourselves because we are thinking more as a team. It feels great to see our players pushing themselves to maintain their composure while sitting inside their homes. Constant communication is another thing helping us. The team has built a new culture of looking out for one another and checking on each other on group chats. We seem to be building a stronger bond. This informal break has given us time to rebuild our performance and mindset. Our players are making sure they’re keeping their morale in check so that the day we have to get up and get to a game, we are in our best condition. As a captain, I am confident that when this all improves and we finally come back, we will come back stronger than ever. Still the best part is getting quality time with my wife and my daughter. I barely got to spend time with my little one while I travelled for games. This is what I feel the most blessed about. 98

Traveller’s Life - Renu Bajracharya I have been in tourism business for last 41 years. I am currently running Suruchi Travel, Himalaya Aventura trekking and Himali Money changer. In these 41 years as a travel agent, I have never seen this kind of an unprecedented situation. There have been so many ups and downs in our business, we overcame earthquakes, the maoist era of civil unrest but nothing was like the Covid situation. Being an entrepreneur in tourism sector, travel has become my life. There was a time when I travelled to Bangkok 18 times in a year. Bangkok became my second home and I ended up buying an apartment there. It provided me a recluse from daily business hustle. When I think of it now, it feels like a story and if the situation doesn’t improve in the foreseeable future, I might have to shutdown my enterprise. I am also a board member of Women Entrepreneur Association of Nepal, SAARC Chamber women entrepreneur council. As a board member, we have a provision of travelling to SAARC countries every six months. We organize expos, motivate women entrepreneurs to sell handmade goods from Nepal all over the world. Our travel motive is to support women entrepreneurs. But, due to lockdown, I don’t even know where am I standing in my travel history. Traveling is like breathing in my life and now we are all suffocating not being able to travel. I have 2 children living abroad and a son here in Nepal. I haven’t seen my daughter who is living in USA for 3 years. The uncertainty of traveling has led us to big dilemma of not seeing them for few more years. Tourism plays a vital role in our country’s economy. The fear of Covid-19 led to significant uncertainty in tourism industry. The industry has suddenly collapsed. Revenue from the business has reached zero in no time. Hence, the whole government mechanism must focus on health sector to resolve the crisis. Tourism will resume someday, let’s be hopeful. Countries around the world have been successful to vaccinate the large part of their population. Nepal must follow suit. We must help our government in acquiring the vaccines and its distribution as soon as possible. “Be Happy Stay Safe “ 99

Athlete Amidst Covid-19 - Sabba Rani Maharjan A Covid-19 brings a tremendous turmoil in a human being. Despite the complexity we are fighting this battle with optimism and that’s the power of humanity. Introducing myself, I am an International Athlete. 2020 and 2021 have indeed been an emotional roller coaster. My experiences were both terrific and terrible. Regardless of many precautions, my dad and I tested positive. We had to rush him to the hospital as his oxygen level dropped. I was frightened but I didn’t let terror strike my face. The glimpse of devastating scenarios of the hospital still keeps coming back. Nonetheless, after several sleepless nights, appointments and medication, we won the battle and I am very grateful to my mother, as our quick recovery is the result of her love and care. Unequivocally, Covid didn’t only effect our physical and psychological state but also our socio-cultural and economic state. Speaking of physical state, more than 30 days of getting rid of the virus, I still have the feeling of fatigue. On the other hand, all the sports institutions are closed. No tournaments, championships or trainings, whatsoever. But the opportunity sparked as the international federation started organizing Online Championship. I qualified for World Championship and obtained silver medal for Nepal in Asian Cup amidst Covid -19. Recently through virtual election, I was elected as the Secretary General of Athlete Commission of Sambo Union of Asia (SUA). These achievements and good news are my coping mechanism during this crisis. With much patience and hard work, I plan to compensate for all the opportunities that were lost due to this apocalypse and wish to go beyond ‘back to normal’ from the pandemic life. 100
