Andrew Perry DARTMOOR WALK TO HANGERSHELL ROCK & UGBOROUGH BEACON Route distance: Approx. 11.5km (7 miles) Elevation: Approx. 375 metres Est. walk time: 2hrs 50mins (at 4km/hour) 1 Starting at the historic granite bridge at the bot- tom of Harford Road walk up past the college to the railway bridge (1: optional start) and continue in the direction of Harford. When you reach Stowford Farm, turn right onto the track marked ‘Two Moors Way’ and continue up to Stowford Moorgate (2). Now on the moors, walk north with the stone wall on you left and Western Beacon on your right. When you arrive at the Addicombe stream crossing (3), head up stream to find the 2 Puffing Billy Track (4). Follow the stony track left for approx. 1km, before leaving the path and heading up to Hangershell Rock (5). Slightly above Hangershell Rock take the path leading north back to the Puffing Billy track briefly before leaving it again to find Spurrel’s 8 Cross (6), out of sight to your right. From here, head south on the level path and make your way around and up to Ugborough Beacon (7) to admire the views. Descend in an easterly direction, over a 3 stream, and then continue up before bearing left to find Butterdon (8). Then head south to Blackpool (pond) and then up to Western Beacon to admire the views of the South Hams (image at top of this page). Finally, drop down to return to Stowford Moorgate (2).
