8 SERIES WALK This map is indicative only and the route is undertaken at your own risk. Please use a further detailed map. For your safety, always use a detailed map and take the appropriate kit/clothing for the open moors and weather conditions. Check out my activity on Strava: https://strava.app.link/9vxBcn4tDab c I live in Ivybridge and run many miles over Dartmoor taking photographs along the way. This is part of a series of walking routes, of varying distances, starting in the Ivybridge area. Andrew Perry DARTMOOR WALK PEEK MOOR GATE TO THREE BARROWS Route distance: Approx. 10km (6.25 miles) Elevation: Approx. 310 metres Est. walk time: 2.5hrs (at 4km per hour) This month’s walk starts from Peek Moor Gate car park. You can find this small car park, on the edge of the moors, between Cheston and Owley (north of the high road, between Moorhaven and South Brent). Please note, this 1 route has a good amount of climbing over the first half of the walk. Start by making your way north, to Owley Corner, keeping the stone wall on your right (1). When reaching the corner of the wall, you can spot the task ahead to the north. You are firstly heading for the Glasscombe Corner trees in the distance, and then Three Barrows on the further horizon. (To the left, you can also see the climbing path, towards Spurrel’s Cross, which is your return route later.) 2 Drop into the valley and cross a small stream, amongst the shrubs, before beginning the climb. Follow the faint path and head for Glasscombe Corner trees (2), cross the stream at Glasscombe Corner (3) and follow the wall around to your right. 8 Continue to Ball Gate (4), before turning left and climb to Wacka Tor rocks (5 & 6). From here, drop into the slight dip before the final climb to find Three Barrows (7). Admire the view, in all directions! 3 Head south from here to pick up the Puffing Billy track. Follow this track for a while before leaving it to find Spurrel’s Cross (8) on the left. Keeping Ugborough Beacon on your right drop back down to Owley Corner, as earlier, and make your way back to the car park. 7 4 Greeting Cards & Prints of Dartmoor available via my website: www.betweenstones.co.uk 5 6 call: 07516 539573 | email: [email protected] | web: theimag.co.uk | facebook: @theimag | twitter: @imag_tweets
