Reducing Stresswith ReviseOnTheGo Atharva Kimbahune

Average Attention Span of Students • “The academic literature is replete with articles and books supporting and propagating the conclusion that lectures should adhere to the 10- to 15-min attention span that is characteristic of modern students.” • The main question to ask is, “Are there times during the period when student minds are more likely to wander?” • According to a study, students are attentive in short lapses of time periods. • Majority of students could only be attentive for short lapses of barely a minute before their mind wandered away. A very short attention span often leads to stress

Current solutions to this problem • The traditional lectures are generally long, and most students find it difficult to concentrate for such long periods of time. • E-learning. • Audio Visual is found to be effective as found in a study, but; • The problem with this type of E- learning is that the content is too long, i.e. too much information to get at once, considering the attention span of students as mentioned before.

Examples of current solutions• BYJU’s: 20-30 minute long lectures with audio-visual representation.• Udemy: Lectures with a significantly long duration. Also audio-visual.• More examples like Khan Academy, edx, etc. work basically on the same concept as the above two.• Thus as discussed earlier, attention span does not match, resulting in an ineffective way of learning.

The Best Solution AgileLearning: • Basically learn in short periods of time while attention is maximum. • This can be done by displaying precise content at the right time. • For eg, Mathematics Formulas. • All algebra formulas revision in 693 secs (much below the threshold of average attention span of an average millennials =) • All geometry formulas revision in 985 secs • Glance at all geometry proofs 300 secs (Approx) • Please look at www.reviseonthego.com for details Maximized learning in short periods of time, i.e. Stress reduced

Our Solution; ReviseOnTheGo • ReviseOnTheGo is currently available for 10th Standard SSC Mathematics • It displays Precise Formulas with audio. • There are 3 apps, namely, • Revise Algebra SSC • Revise Geometry SSC • Revise Geometry Theorems • The first two apps have the formulas with the audio, the third app is just for referencing or brushing up the theorems. • These formulas can be looked at and heard for short periods of time whilst the attention time-span of the student. • Using a Headset helps the student to concentrate and get isolated the from external noises. We want to replicate these apps across boards/standards pan India through Startup India

Content related challenges• The process of creating the content was time consuming.• Everything had to be typed manually.• Also, the theorem app was created with a slightly less quality gif file to reduce size, but ended up not displaying at all in few phones.• Corrected this issue by using lower quality jpeg images and hence fixed it.

Downloads and Feedback 30000 + direct downloads and much more by popular “App Sharing” apps.

Comments Received and Analysis• Total comments received – 454• Average words / comment – 6• Average grammatical mistakes – 32 % = • Male students were very vocal• Female students have given very good• feedback and ratings = Need your blessings to replicate this success pan India

Business Model • Currently the apps are free, but support is needed. • Ads integration • Funding requests to Startupindia, Tata Trust, Bill Gates foundation / Ashoka/ Dept of Science and technology / Atal technology mission and others • Ask social CSR’s for support • White labelled apps for publishers like Navneet

Marketing Campaign FacebookResearch Visits by Talks in papers Marketing Schools person Posters NGO’s Email WhatsApp (Jidnyasa forwards Maths Trust) Teacher Offline Participati association on in Newspapers awards

Way Forward • Update the apps with following features: • Implement a time log which will check how much time does the user spend on the app • Use this data to implement a machine learning algorithm to get useful data like attention span of students in different regions, different usage patterns, etc. • Implement features like blink to scroll, voice assisted navigation within the app, etc. for the differently-abled people. • Continue to make more and more apps for more education boards as well as engineering. • In-process of registering a Start-up

Learning1. 30000 + direct downloads coupled with more than 450 encouraging comments how the apps have helped students to revise the formulas.2. Did my bit for fellow students to be STRESS FREE or at least reduce their burden while getting good marks (derived from comments)3. Demonstrated that students can develop relevant apps for themselves at virtually no cost that could benefit the students.4. Recognition at IAMAI awards 2015 and a finalist at Bell awards 2014.5. Coverage in Times Of India.
