INVESTMENT CASTING PROCESS 7

1. Die Making - This is the most important part in investment casting as any error will reflect in final casting. Allowance for each of all dimensional changes is to be incorporated in the die. Dies are usually made of aluminium due to its good thermal conductivity, light weight and good life. 2. Wax Patterns - Hydraulic Wax Injection Machine is used to make wax patterns. Molten wax is pumped through wax pump and injected in dies on wax injection machines. Wax pattens are ejected when cooled down and stored in cooled place. 3. Pattern Assembly - The patterns are assembled to a running and feeding system by welding with a wax-welding gun and wax glue. The ingate of each pattern is fixed to the central down sprue. 4. Dip Coating & Stucco Applicator - Cluster Assembly is dipped into primary Silica slurry followed by Stucco with fine sand. This process repeated few times till it get a desired shell thickness. Coated assembly then kept aside to dry in controlled temperature and humidity. 5. Shell Dewaxing & Shell firing - It is the process to melt out wax from wax patterns. This leaves behind the ceramic shell having cavities of the exact shape and dimensions of the wax patterns. After dewaxing it preheated to develop the high temperature bond of the shell. Also it is done to prevent thermal shock and minimise casting defects. 8

6. Metal Casting - All ferrous and non ferrous metals like steel, aluminum, Alloy steel etc can be Investment cast. There is no as such limitation for any metal. Conventional casting methods like, ladle pouring or furnace pouring, are used for casting metal into the investment casting shells. 7. Fettling & Cut off- Once the cast is solified, it is passed through knockout machine to break down the shell. The castings are separated from the sprue and the runner system by Abrasive cut-off wheels, saws, gouging rods, etc In case there is a need the castings are further finished using sand/ steel shot blasting techniques. The castings are inspected at appropriate stages to ensure quality of metal, dimensions and physical properties. 9
