WORLD HERITAGE DAY 2021 ❖18 th APRIL of every year is celebrated every year as The International Days for Monuments and Sites owing its significance to the various activities promoting the preservation of cultural and monumental heritage undertaken by ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites ) in affiliation with UNESCO. ❖ICOMOS was founded in 1965 with its headquarters at Paris in France and subsequently in 1982 it announced that 18 th April would be celebrated as THE WORLD HERITAGE DAY thus giving a platform to the nations around the globe to share information about its cultural and monumental heritage and their protection. ❖A new theme for celebration by ICOMOS every year on 18 th April enables every nation to identify, conserve and restore the legacy left behind by its ancestor and revive the same. ❖The vividness in observing World heritage Day every 18th of April has helped in spreading awareness about diversity a nation holds in terms of its cultural heritage, amid efforts to conserve them.

THE DAWN OF RAILWAY ERA IN INDIA ▪ The contract between The East India Company and The Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR ) referred to as “The Experimental Railway “ all through was all set to motion in 1853, a humble beginning then, transformed today to not just be be an integral part of the nation but also to claim its position as the second largest rail network in the world and largest in Asia. ▪ The idea of laying railway line was conceived by the far sighted governor general Lord Dalhousie in 1843 and George . T .Clarke the chief engineer who studied the possibilities for installation that finally gave shape and the project saw the light of the day when amidst a ceremonial 21 gun salute Boribunder played host to the 400 esteemed passengers on board for the inaugural run of the first passenger train in Asia creating history.

BIRTH OF THE GREAT INDIAN PENINSULA RAILWAY (GIPR) ❖The first magnificent train marvel was the product of Jagannath Shankarseth the first Indian member of the Asiatic society and Parsi businessman Sir Jamsetji Jejeebhoy the 2 Indian directors in the 10 member board who became the trend setters by forming the Indian Railway Association that later emerged into The Great Indian Peninsular Railway. ❖Advertisement prior to the operation of the first run as quoted by the traffic manager Roche stated “The public are respectfully informed that the Indian Peninsula Railway Opening For Passenger-Traffic” Jagannath Shankarseth Sir Jamsetji Jejeebhoy

THE EVOLUTION OF CENTRAL RAILWAY THAT CREATED A PASSENGER RAIL REVOLUTION The 14-carriage train hauled by three steam locomotives: Sahib, Sindh and Sultan was a kick start for the nation on Saturday the 16th April 1853 when the maiden journey of 34 kms between Boribunder and Tannah carrying 400 passengers. The evolution of Central Railway from GIPR is a story of technological changes through its progress and development gradually earning a heritage status. PARADISE ON THE SAHYADRI RANGE ❑The Year 1907 added more colours to the then GIPR corridors when Sir Abdul Hussein Adamjee Peerbhoy built the heritage rail service called The Matheran Light Railway. ❑Laying down 2 feet narrow guage railway lines for a 21 km route over the steep gradient path on Matheran Light Railway went on from 1904 to 1907 and is yet another engineering marvel accomplished on the Western Ghats. ❑The Matheran Light Railway utilised Rail cars as against coaches and would accommodate around 12 passengers on its ride.

EXTENDING RAILWAY LINES ALONG THE DEEP RAVINES OF THE SAHYADRI RANGES ALONG THE BHOR GHAT AND THAL GHAT BHOR GHAT THAL GHAT

Bhor ghat (Karjat- Lonavala) a STORY OF CHALLENGE, TRAGEDY AND TRIUMPH FROM 1856 TO 1863 ▪ Rigorous study and survey by James John Berkley, the then resident engineer and George. T. Clarke the man behind the first passenger train gave a head start for the Bhor Ghat project in 1856. ▪ It was a venture that saw the shaping and and laying of railway routes across the cliffy terrains of the Sahyadris, toughest engineering feat of the 19th century. ▪ It involved around 25000 labourers each day risking their lives along slippery slopes, working through deep valley having no foothold, clinging on through ropes, striving for drinking water in the scorching heat and also the epidemics like malaria and cholera that pose a threat. ▪ It took 8 rigorous years to finally succeed but at a heavy price of a loss of around 30000 lives approximately. ▪ The opening of the section saw a gala event organised on the 21st of April,1863 attended by Sir Bartle Frere, the then Governor of Bombay.

1930 A REMARKABLE YEAR IN THE ANNALS OF GIPR WITH THE FLAGGING OF DECCAN QUEEN ON THE 1ST OF JUNE 1ST TRAIN FEATURING A DINING CAR 1ST SUPERFAST TRAIN ON INDIAN RAILWAYS PRYING BETWEEN 1ST TRAIN TO BOMBAY AND POONA INTRODUCE LADIES 1ST TRAIN LONG DISTANCE COACH TRAIN RUN POWERED BY ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE IN 1ST VESTIBULED 1930 TRAINON INDIAN RAILWAY INITIATED WITH TWO RAKES OF 7 COACHES EACH , THE UNDERFRAME OF THE COACHS WERE INITIALLY BUILT IN ENGLAND AND THE BODIES OF THE COACHES CONSTRUCTED AT MATUNGA WORKSHOP OF THE GIPR DECCAN QUEEN SERVED AS A WEEK END PRESTIGIOUS SPECIAL FOR HORSE RACE ENTHUSIASTS AND THE ELITE RICH CLASS OF BOMBAY

A NEW BEGINNING AFTER GIPR ERA • 5th November, 1951 saw the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR ) co-exist with 4 other government owned railways namely the Scindia state Railway of the former Princely State of Gwalior, the Nizam state Railway, the Wardha Coal State Railway and the Dholpur Railways to form The CENTRAL RAILWAY. • From the British Raj to the modern rail operations the Central Railway continues to chug on with new dimensions and initiatives . • 14TH December, 1979 saw Central Railway graciously gifting its most prestigious railway heritage artefact, the early electric locomotive that pried in the early 1930’s , to the Nehru Science Centre on display for the newer generations to admire its pristine beauty.

MUMBAI DIVISION Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus: • The finest Baroque Roman architecture is the Headquarters of Central Railway. • Declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2004. • Exceptionally built and designed by Frederic William in Gothic style with a blend of Indian architecture. • Its magnificence is its sandstone carvings, eye catching designs with display of birds and animals adding music of life to the still structure.

HERITAGE ASSETS IN MUMBAI DIVISION AT THE HERITAGE GULLY CSMT The first electric locomotive belonging to class WCG-1(EF/1) termed ‘Crocodile/Krokodil’. Named after Sir Leie Orme Wilson the then Governor of Bombay. Built in 1928 by Vulcan Foundry, Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works. Used for freight transit along Bombay-Pune and Bombay –Igatpuri section.

COACHES OF YESTER YEARS AT HERITAGE GULLY ➢Coach No. CR2418 ERB a 4 wheeled compartment (Saloon Car) served as an inspection carriage for supervisors. ➢Built in the Year 1930. ➢Builder- Tata Engineering & Locomotive Company India(TELCO).

WAGON OF THE GIPR ERA AT HERITAGE GULLY ➢Coach No. CR 77918 ➢A bogie covered wagon box car ➢Built Year 1920 ➢Builder- The Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company Ltd. Builders Smethwick England

NESTLING AT THE HERITAGE GULLY AFTER AROUND 42 YEARS OF SERVICE ▪ TYPE –WCG-2 DC , presently WCG-1 20027 Custom built freight loco. ▪ Built in the Year 1976. ▪ Builder- Chittaranjan Locomotive Works(CLW), West Bengal .

NARROW GAUGE TREASURE AT LOKMANYA TILAK TERMINUS (LTT ) MUMBAI The locomotive that pried on the 2 feet 6 inches gauge railway line in 1897 till 1954 on the Barsi Light Railway in the western India, the British engineer Evarard Calthrop who is regarded as the brain child for the narrow guage railway line in India.

THANE OPENING A NEW HERITAGE PAGE The Barsi Light Narrow Gauge Railway (BLR) steam locomotive F- 717 is routed in March 2021 to make Thane station proud to commemorate and revive the old pages in the history of GIPR wherein Thane station was the destination of the first passenger train. The loco dates back to 1928 and was built by Nasmyth Wilson & Co. England.

DOWN THE memory LANE AT HERITAGE GULLY AT CSMT The Hand tub fire engine is hand drawn and was made in 1890 by Merry Weather & sons of London and performed a feat of delivering 55 gallons of water up to 90 feet The Albion Printing press was installed in Byculla Printing Press, Year-1899 Built by Harrild & Sons, England. Used for printing books it is an early model of iron and hand press

PUNE STATION BUILDING The GIPR opened the railway line in 1858. The Pune railway station building was constructed in 1925.

TRAINING CENTRE The Indian Railway Institute of Civil Engineering (IRICEN ) was started in 1959 for training civil engineers of the railways. This is situated at the main exit gate of Pune Railway Station.

CHHATRAPATI SHAHU MAHARAJ TERMINUS AN ENTICING ARCHITECTURE The only station that was constructed by a Prince on 3rd May 1888 and also self sponsored and the first train service from Kolhapur started on April 20, 1891.

SOLAPUR DIVISION ▪ Solapur division is as old as 140 years. ▪ The largest division on Central Railway covering 10 districts. ▪ Kurduwadi station became a part of Central Railway in 1954. Earlier it was a part of Barsi Light Railway.
