CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS PROGRAMThe mission of the NCAA is to maintain intercollegiate athleticsas an integral part of the campus educational program and thestudent-athlete as an integral part of the student body. With thisin mind, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program was created to sup-port the student-athlete development initiatives of NCAA mem-ber institutions and to enhance the quality of the student-ath-lete experience within the context of higher education. In the process of achieving this mission, the CHAMPS/Life SkillsProgram will:• Promote student-athletes’ ownership of their academic, ath- letic, career, personal and community responsibilities.• Meet the changing needs of student-athletes.• Promote respect for diversity and inclusion among student- athletes.• Assist student-athletes in identifying and applying transfer- able skills.• Enhance partnerships between the NCAA, member institutions and their communities for the purpose of education.• Foster an environment that encourages student-athletes to effectively access campus resources.CHallengingAthletes’Minds forPersonalSuccess 1

• Encourage the development of character, integrity and leadership skills.Participants in the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program are providedwith instructional materials and supplemental resources thatsupport a student-athlete’s development in five areas: acade-mics, athletics, personal development, career development andcommunity service. CHAMPS/Life Skills Program Commitment Statements Commitment to Academic Excellence To support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation. Commitment to Athletic Excellence To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletics programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student-athlete. Commitment to Personal Development To support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, leadership, personal growth and decision-making skills. Commitment to Career Development To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals. Commitment to Service To engage the student-athlete in service to his/her campus and surrounding communities. 2

PROGRAM HISTORYIn 1991, the NCAA Foundation initiated efforts to create a totaldevelopment program for student-athletes. Through thecollaborative efforts of the NCAA Foundation and the Division1A Athletics Directors’ Association, the CHAMPS/Life SkillsProgram (Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success)was created. In 1994, after several years of development by the NCAAFoundation, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program was introducedto the NCAA membership. That summer, 46 NCAA institutionsparticipated in the first orientation for administrators fromaround the country. Since then, approximately 40 member insti-tutions and conferences have joined the CHAMPS/Life SkillsProgram each year.Today, the NCAA education services staff oversees the devel-opment of the program, offering services, support and programsto participating institutions throughout the year. The CHAMPS/LifeSkills Program is supported through the promotional and finan-cial efforts of the NCAA. EDUCATION SERVICES MISSION NCAA education services provides educational opportunities to the membership that promote... Equity Healthy Choices Positive Life Skills Safe Environments Academic Success Community Leadership ...for the development of the student-athlete.The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program has an advisory team to helpwith programming initiatives and planning for the annualOrientation and Continuing Education Conferences. The 14-member advisory team is made up of a diverse group of coor-dinators representing all NCAA divisions from different regionsof the country. 3

RESOURCES AVAILABLEA successful CHAMPS/Life Skills Program reflects the natureand personality of the campus environment, its department ofathletics, and the unique needs of its student-athletes. For thisreason, the program requires a significant commitment fromparticipating institutions. To help meet this commitment, each participating institution isprovided instructional materials, adaptable to each campusprogram. Materials provided to each institution include:✓ A needs assessment instrument to assist a participating institution in determining the priority of its student-athletes’ needs.✓ A program administration guide that includes information addressing various administrative issues and program eval- uation instruments.✓ Supplemental materials to support the instructional materials (e.g., videotapes, DVDs).✓ An opportunity to register for the CHAMPS/Life Skills list- serv, which is ongoing conversation with Life Skills Coordinators from across the country, sharing resources and ideas.✓ Access to the online resource room, where some sample poli- cies and Life Skills materials are housed.DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIESAt least one representative from each institution or conferenceoffice must attend the CHAMPS/Life Skills ProgramOrientation, when a school or conference office is accept-ed into the program. At the conference, participants are placedin teams to exchange ideas, network and develop plans to imple-ment the programs on their campuses. The OrientationConference precedes the Continuing Education Conferenceeach February. In addition to the Orientation, there is an annual CHAMPS/Life Skills Program Continuing EducationConference that introduces institutions to new materials, provides supplemental program assistance and assists in improv-ing the effectiveness of the campus CHAMPS/Life SkillsPrograms. This is an opportunity for coordinators to exchangeprogramming ideas and focus on personal and professionaldevelopment. The Continuing Education Conference is heldeach February. 4

Every NCAA institution is invited to nominate student-athletes toattend the annual NCAA National Student-AthleteDevelopment Conference held in the spring. The missionof the conference is to assemble a diverse group of student-ath-letes who will actively participate in and experience a multitudeof challenging and thought-provoking activities that will enablethem to become change agents on their campuses and in theircommunities.Professional development opportunities for CHAMPS/Life Skillsadministrators are also available annually. The NCAA educa-tion services staff is always looking for qualified, energeticprofessionals to serve as conference facilitators, on the AdvisoryTeam or to present their program at the Continuing EducationConference. A Call for Leaders is distributed to eachCHAMPS/Life Skills coordinator annually.STARTING A LIFE SKILLS PROGRAMEach NCAA member institution tailors the CHAMPS/Life SkillsProgram to meet the needs of its student-athletes. Whetheryour campus is ready to apply to the program or not, there aresteps you can take to start programming for the needs of yourstudent-athletes:✓ Gain support from administrators on your campus.✓ Inventory the existing resources and life skills programming on your campus (not only in the athletics department, e.g., reach out to student affairs offices on campus).✓ Involve your Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in assess- ing student-athlete needs and initiating new programming.✓ Track the changing needs of your student-athletes through student-athlete focus groups and surveys.✓ Form an advisory team on your campus consisting of inter- ested and supportive faculty, athletics staff, administrators, student affairs staff, coaches and student-athletes.✓ Talk with your conference office or other member institutions in your conference regarding best practices and opportuni- ties to share resources. 5
