Annual Report to Donors 2010 www.cheleyfoundation.org

Letter from the ChairDear Friends of the John Austin Cheley Foundation:It is our privilege to report to you the results of another extraordinary year for the John Austin Cheley Foundation. With many non-profit and charitable organizations struggling to maintain consistent contributions, the Foundation was able to exceed all previouslevels of donations and grow our total endowment assets to almost two million dollars.Your continued support resulted in: • 67 camperships being awarded to children from all over the United States. This far exceeded the goal of 50 camperships for 2010 that was established in 2005. • The first Foundation campers attended Camp Kawanhee for Boys in Maine. • The establishment of the Carol and Ron Periard Family Endowed Campership assures in perpetuity an annual opportunity for a camper in the Periard family name. This generous donation from Carol and Ron represents the seventh endowment the Foundation has received since 2005. The Board of Trustees is very appreciative of this award. • The funding of the Anna Belle Kritser Scholarship will for many years allow a camper to attend camp in Anna Belle’s name. This scholarship was funded by the friends of Anna Belle and a generous donation from Cheley Colorado Camps. • Over $40,000 being raised in December on Colorado’s first “Giving First Day.” The Foundation was one of over 500 charities invited to participate in this new and highly successful event. In 2010 the Board elected Buffie Berger, Amy Blevins, Debbie Leibold, and Jeff Roberts as new Trustees. Buffie has been elected tothe position of Assistant Treasurer, Amy to the position of Secretary, Jeff to the position of Chair of Audit and Compliance, whileDebbie has been invaluable in her efforts toward fundraising and sponsoring children for camperships.Retiring from the Board of Trustees are Bob Fletcher, Sam Frostman, and Dave Holt. Each of these Trustees brought skills and pas-sion to the Foundation that gave new meaning to the word “volunteer.” We will remain forever indebted for the countless hours theyspent moving the Foundation forward,The Foundation, through your contributions, continues to provide opportunities for personal development in the children we send tocamp. We believe that in today’s society, an extended outdoor experience is more important than ever before. We are grateful for your continued support.Jim Fuller, Priscilla Engeln Barb RosstonChair Vice Chair, Vice Chair, Camperships Development Mission StatementThe John Austin Cheley Foundation serves to secure the benefits of a summer campexperience for children whose family resources are not adequate to cover the costs.John Austin Cheley Foundation 2 Annual Report For Donors 2010

Comments from 2010 CampersCamp has definitely changed my life. Everybody at campmade camp feel like home and they always seemed to be bymy side whenever I was feeling down. I grew accustomed toliving with friends and learned how to discipline myself.I learned how to be a leader and a respectable person.Camp is a place where you can be yourself without anybodybeing disrespectful towards you. Without the campershipthat I received, I wouldn’t have been able to come to camp. Most importantly I wouldn’t have learned to be a leaderamongst my peers. Camp has made me want to be a better person. Camp -Joseph has also introduced me to my best friends who I stayCamp has made me a stronger person inside and out. The in contact with during the year. The people you meet atfriends you earn at camp are like no friends you could find camp you will never forget. Every person there has madeanywhere else. a footprint in my heart. Camp helped me figure out who I -Veronica was and what kind of person I want to be. -YenMy most treasured memory of camp is doing a night hike One of the most fun and difficult activities waswith some fellow campers to the top of a point a mile away mountain biking. It challenged me in so many differentand having to go through steep uphills and getting to the top ways. I learned about the bike and how to be safe onand feeling victorious; we shared laughs and thoughts on the the trail. I met so many different and interesting people.way down. I did so many things that I thought I would never get -Isaac to do. I liked the dinners at camp because they were family style which gave us all a chance to talk with each other. At camp everybody watched out for each other. When we were struggling we would encourage each other and help. -McCarthy Camp has changed my life in so many ways. I have learned how to become a better person by helping others and appreciating the beauty of nature. I think my most treasured memory from camp will be when I climbed to the summits of the two tallest mountains in Colorado, Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive. Those two mountains were the hardest thing I had ever done. I felt like giving up so many times but I didn’t, that was the best… not giving up. The view from the top of those two mountains was amazing, definitely unforgettable and worth all the hard work. -Dulce John Austin Cheley Foundation 6 Annual Report For Donors 2010

Spending a month with them, you become so close. Not exaggerating, you guys become life-long friends -Shawna Alumna Comment It’s hard to imagine what my life would be like now without the influence of Cheley.  The integration of Cheley in my life expanded my worldview and engrained in me the idea that I can do anything I put my mind to.  Cheley continues to teachme the true value of friendship and camaraderie, as thefriends I met at Cheley remain some of my mostcherished.  I am who I am today, I live a life of true joy, Iwork toward my highest potential, I take intelligent risks, and I experience true passion because of my experiencesat Cheley. I currently work as a Social Worker with middle schoolstudents in inner-city Kansas City, Kansas.  Working withthese youth makes me think of my time at Cheley andwish all of my students could experience the positive, caring, and inspiring environment Cheley naturallyprovides. The John Austin Cheley Foundation provides anincredible opportunity for youth who otherwise would notbe able to go to incredible summer camps, like Cheley.  Ifeel so privileged to have been awarded a “campership”to go to Cheley and to have been cradled by its care, love, and support for many years.  The John Austin CheleyFoundation truly does change lives! -Casey Pettit John Austin Cheley Foundation 7 Annual Report For Donors 2010

On this website, people could learn about and donate to any of the 539 participatingcharities, including the John Austin Cheley Foundation.*To motivate donors to give, FirstBank contributed $250,000 to create an Incentive Fund that boosted the value of each donation. This gift led the way for 27 other businesses and organizations to add their support to the fund, resulting in a total of $320,000.FirstBank also dedicated $50,000 to defray a portion of the processing and credit card fees associated with online giving. The goal to raise $1 million in one day for Colorado nonprofits on Colorado Gives Day was far surpassed when 12,540individuals donated $8.4 million. Audited financial statements, current investment policy and current portfolio summary available upon request.Treasurer’s CommentsThe Foundation’s total assets increased $322,411, or 17.34%, during the fiscal year ended December 31, 2010. The investment portfolioreturned 10.95% for the year, compared to a 11.95% return for our benchmark, a 65%/30%/5% blend of the S&P 500 Stock Index, theBarclay’s Intermediate Government/Corporate Bond Index and Cash. Equity markets continued to improve in 2010 rising by more than 15%for the full year. While the Foundation’s equity investments performed well with returns in-line with the overall stock market, the large cashbalances maintained by the Foundation to fund annual expenses proved to be a drag on overall portfolio performance. The Foundation’sportfolio remains diversified and is invested in a range of asset classes. We regularly monitor the credit quality of our fixed-income investments. We continue to enjoy an excellent working relationship with our growing roster of Associate Camp partners, and we take advantage of allearly payment and other available discounts. Our seventh annual audit has been successfully completed.John D.
