2021-2022 ANNUAL REPORT A SUMMER OF LEARNING, LOVING AND LAUGHING OUR MISSION IS TO CHANGE KIDS’ LIVES THROUGH TRANSFORMATIVE SUMMER CAMP EXPERIENCES.

Learning, Loving, and Laughing When I think back to my seven summers as a young As a child I had flirted with the outdoors, hiking, international camp counselor from England during the climbing, and sailing, but at camp I fell in love. Etched late 1980s and the 1990s, my overriding memories of onto my heart is the serenity of the Boundary Waters those summers far from home are about learning, loving, Canoe Area Wilderness and the majesty of Lake Superior. and laughing. I didn’t have the opportunity to attend I fell in love with the freedom that camp represents, camp as a camper, but I quickly realized that what camp embracing the responsibility that comes with it. And I fell teaches is not exclusively reserved for campers. in love with an experience so unique and powerful that to this day I have not found its equal. If laughter is great medicine, then camp surely is one of life’s dispensaries. Within the deepest and most meaningful of friendships forged from countless hours around the campfire or on the trail, laughter was seldom lurking in the background. It was all around, everywhere, every day. And, along with the love and learning that happened at camp, it helped to shape those who embraced it. Visiting camps this summer it was obvious to our newly elected Board Chair, Dave Brown, and myself that the learning, the love, and the laughter that we, our children, and those who came before us have been fortunate to experience at camp remain vibrant and ever present. The young people we serve come to us dreaming of the learning, loving, and laughing they’ll do at camp. Our role is to guide them and encourage them to fully embrace an experience that has the power to shape who they are, who they’ll become, and how they’ll impact the lives of others. Over the course of those summers, I learned so much I truly believe that we are changing the world about who I was. My time at camp also shaped much of one child and one summer at a time. who I was to become. I learned about the lives of other people and how they were both similar to and different Tim Lucas from my own. My world until that point was small, but Executive Director camp opened my eyes and ignited an interest far beyond those boundaries. Camp fed my emotional intelligence and I learned how to truly belong.

2022 Volunteer of the Year: Terry Taylor A Thousand Summers (ATS) is excited to announce that Terry Taylor from Denver, Colorado, is our 2021-2022 Volunteer of the Year. Terry was a camper and junior counselor at Cheley Camps, worked as a hiking and backpacking counselor for four years, and then spent four more summers as the Director of Girls’ Trails End. Terry joined the ATS board in 2020. She has chaired the Programs Committee for two years, guiding the committee’s oversight of existing programs as well as the development of the ATS Compass Program. Terry also serves on the ATS Development Committee. She is currently an instructional designer for educational and commercial organizations focusing on online curriculum planning, course development, and faculty training. Terry has put her Instructional Design experience to work on converting the ATS Volunteer Training program to an online interactive program. She has designed seven training course modules to date. When asked why she wanted to get involved “I know how significant camp was for me in terms with ATS, Terry said, “I believe strongly in of growing up with self-confidence, resilience, ATS’s mission of changing kids’ lives through courage, kindness, skills to both lead and follow, transformative camp experiences and love of the outdoors and adventure, and the wanted to be a part of that. Every kid ability to look at the world and others from a should have a camp experience!” bigger perspective instead of a small bubble. I think that if every kid could experience the same Terry’s professional expertise, her passion for thing, the world would be a better place.” camp, and her positive outlook are helping us –Terry Taylor, ATS Volunteer of the Year elevate our programs to the next level. Thank you, Terry, for all that you do for ATS!

Learning Life Lessons at Camp At A Thousand Summers, we believe that wilderness- but the skills that kids learn at camp are long-lasting based camp programs create a unique and powerful and help them navigate the challenges in their opportunity for social and emotional growth. That’s everyday lives when they return home from camp. why we partner with some of the most highly regarded camps in the country to provide immersive and At a time when so many young people are experiencing challenging outdoor experiences for the kids we serve. increasing mental health demands, time at camp is crucially important. They learn to advocate for and must do more. themselves in the absence of their parents and to be more responsible and self-reliant. In this past year, A Thousand Summers launched the Compass Program—our first significant step toward Camp improves physical and mental well-being and our program vision of expanding our own youth helps to build healthy and well-rounded kids who are development offerings. Through this year-round independent, responsible, connected and engaged. program, we believe that we can better prepare kids These life lessons, and so many others, are what make for the camp experience, but also build upon the camp such a powerful experience. growth that occurs at camp. Yes, the friendships, the fun, the time away from technology, and the adventures are important,

The Compass Program is a multi-year and multi-faceted strategic initiative to enhance social and emotional learning and provide service and leadership opportunities for kids in our summer camp program. At the core of this year-round programming is Wayfinder—a progressive and developmental social and emotional learning curriculum consisting of group experiences that foster meaningful relationships and guide kids to navigate their lives with a sense of belonging and purpose. The objectives of the Compass Program are: 1. To connect the kids we serve to trained instructors who help them effectively prepare for and process their camp experience 2. To teach kids how to be self-aware and self-reflective 3. To help kids feel that they belong, know what is meaningful to them, know what they care about in the world, and learn how to act with purpose 4. To encourage kids to grow into thriving, contributing, successful adults who give back to their communities and protect the environment and natural world This past spring, ATS welcomed its first cohort of campers into the Compass Program and we plan to continue on with those kids as well as add a new cohort of participants every year until all of our ATS kids are directly involved in some level of the Compass Program. We saw positive outcomes in this first year of the program. A Compass Program parent shared with us that as a result of the Compass Program her daughter “improved her friendship skills and was able to rise to the occasion and was known to be a good friend and leader at camp. She was able to form a new identity for herself that she proudly carries into middle school.” One of the first-year Compass Program kids said that the program “really helped me express myself as a person and express what I need as a person. I used this at camp to make new connections along with solving problems, which helped me feel like I belonged.” We love hearing these positive comments from Compass participants. We also know that just like camp, with each year of involvement the impact will be stronger and more enduring. With the addition of the Compass Program, our ATS campers will be able to optimize the growth that comes from their summer camp experiences, ultimately helping them to discover a sense of belonging and purpose and preparing them to successfully navigate the future.
