Associate Camps Contact Information Mission Buffie's Blog Buffie Berger, Executive Director At JACF, we love talking about impact, or in other words how and why the camp experience makes a positive, lifealtering difference in children's lives. Our supporters are off the charts passionate about our mission for this reason and a day does not go by without someone saying to me that we do something very cool. In speaking and writing about impact, we have begun to share more stories with you about our kids and their families and we have focused on the research and outcomes that substantiate the benefits of an extendedstay summer camp experience. I have realized that we have, for important reasons, communicated the \"head\" and have downplayed the emotional core of what motivates us to provide the camp experience to others. This summer I made the commitment to myself to spend at least one day each week in the mountains. Several of those days were spent horseback riding with a camp friend whom I have known since we were ten. A horse had been abandoned and unridden at the barn where my friend stables her horse, Jack, and Rowdy was my opportunity to ride the trails again. Rowdy? Abandoned? Unridden? What was I thinking? You can imagine that I felt very tentative, not knowing what to expect. When the time came to ride, I mounted; we rode over steep, rocky terrain, with my friend's horse stumbling frequently while Rowdy motored up and down; we travelled up and back on dirt roads navigating the occasional pick up driving up behind us. I stayed on the whole time and learned that Rowdy was actually a highly trained, trustworthy horse. It was through this experience that I felt the competence and confidence I knew in my youth from taking calculated risks and realized that taking this leap of faith has had much to do with my success in my professional life. On that day in early June, I got in touch again with my \"inner camp\", the feeling that has motivated me tohttps://bos.etapestry.com/prod/viewEmailAsPage.do?databaseId=JohnAustinCheleyFoundation&mailingId=28798488&personaRef=3174.0.11972&jobRef=781.0.147339333&memberId=1132234761&erRef=3174.0.1198… 2/5
9/7/2014 Camp Matters, September, 2014 provide meaningful, impactful and lifeshaping growth opportunities, especially for youth who do not have the privilege or good fortune to attend high quality extendedstay summer camps. It has been a gratifying realization, not only for me personally, but also for driving me in my work life. So, I challenge you now to spend a few moments to answer the question, \"What is your \"inner camp\" experience?\" Welcome Tim Lucas JACF was proud to welcome Tim Lucas to its staff as of July 1. JACF's third employee, Tim will focus primarily on expanding and enhancing our processes for selection, onboarding and renewal of our Associate Camp relationships which are key to the delivery of our mission. As we begin work on implementing our National Footprint Model (see June, 2014 Camp Matters) and prepare for growing the impact, reach and number of youth served in the next several years, Tim's work in the careful selection of new Associate Camps that align with our mission will be essential to our longterm success. Tim will also develop the business plan for our National Footprint Model, working closely with staff, and support JACF in other operational areas including technology and communications. Tim brings to us critical experience in working with national nonprofits with regional structures, development of efficient and strategic operational processes and a background in working in the camp industry in the area of international staffing services. Tim also possesses a strong educational background having worked as a teacher and administrator in independent schools, which is where he first worked with Executive Director, Buffie Berger. Tim's camp roots run deep as he met his wife, Kimm, while both were working at Camp Lincoln/Camp Lake Hubert in Minnesota. Changes to 2015 Campership Program We have barely closed up our 2014 camp season, but our Campership Application for 2015 is live and ready to go via our website. We have refined several aspects of the campership program in light of decisions made by the Board of Trustees at its April, 2014 meeting. With our focus keenly on impact, JACF will fund lowincome, underserved youth for the full lifespan of their camp experience provided they continue to meet our eligibility guidelines. We know that the camp experience is the most powerful when it happens over multiple years. Further, with our interest in promoting leadership, we want JACF campers to have the opportunity to partiicipate in camp \"Counselor in Leadership Training (CILT) Programs\" and we will be working increasingly with our Associate Camps to support these programs. With this change, the \"4th Summer Mentorship\" has been renamed the \"Capstone Experience\" and we will encourage more of our campers to participate in their final year of camp before becoming eligible for a \"CILT\" or Junior Counselor placement. We have also changed the name of our volunteer \"recruiters\" to \"mentors\" as this title better reflects the support that they provide for our applicants and our selected campers. Application information can be found on our website, and you may contact our Campership Program Director, Karen Smith, to assist with questions or application support. What's Up with the Annual Report? We have received several inquiries about the publication date for the 2013 Annual Report. The Annual Report should be ready in midOctober, which going forward will be the regular publication date. The Board of Trustees approved in 2013 a change in our fiscal year to better mirror the schedule of our activities to 7/016/30. To get on track, we incurred a \"short year\" at the beginning of 2014, from 1/016/30, and for efficiency reasons decided to conduct both the 2013 and the 2014 Short Year Audits at the same time. We are planning to distribute the Annual Report electronically to be in alignment with our support for nature and the outdoors and to save on the cost of this expensive publication. We will continue to mail the annual report to our friends and donors who have not provided us with email addresses and will have hard copies available by request. If you would prefer to receive a hard copy version, please email [email protected] with your request.https://bos.etapestry.com/prod/viewEmailAsPage.do?databaseId=JohnAustinCheleyFoundation&mailingId=28798488&personaRef=3174.0.11972&jobRef=781.0.147339333&memberId=1132234761&erRef=3174.0.1198… 4/5
