Background & HistoryThe J opened in 1983 and serves all residents of the community, regardless of ethnicity, ageor disability. Its premier special needs summer camp, Camp Giborim, serves over 145 childrenand young adults between the ages of 3-22. The mission of Camp Giborim, meaning “heroes”in Hebrew, is to offer a traditional recreational summer camp environment for special needscampers with autism, Down syndrome, developmental delays and various other disabilities.The camp is filled with innovative activities and creative programming within a culture ofinclusion.The special needs population expressed a need for a year-round program for youth and adults.The J, committed to meeting these needs, developed Giborim U (Gib U), a program offeringenrichment classes and social events.Giborim U MissionGiborim U is a program for children, teens and adults with special needs and includes courses in fitness, the arts, sports, recreation,life skills and health and wellness.
