Chai-ways • PAGE 2 ENDOWMENTS “If you’re going to leave a legacy, make a mark on the world that cannot be erased.” -MAYA ANGELOU The David Posnack JCC is one of the most meaningful organizations in West Broward because it does so much for so many people of all ages, faiths and abilities. It represents what a community is, how people live, and what people want. The 2023 JCC Maccabi Games® and Access is all inclusive; the preschool reaches out and takes infants at two months old, the after school program helps when parents have to work. When you walk around the J, you see people with a variety of interests, ages, religions and cultures. It is a place for everyone to come together to enjoy an activity, meet friends and feel part of the community. You do not have to have millions to leave something behind. You just need the mindset to want to help others. Be a part of something special. Consider leaving an endowed gift to the David Posnack JCC by contacting Chief Philanthropy Officer, Beverly Bachrach at 954-434-0499, ext. 321 or [email protected]. Dr. Jack Nudel, a retired gastroenterologist, named the Mania and Max DAVID POSNACK JCC Nudel Holocaust Learning Center (MMNHLC) for his parents, who survived the Holocaust. Their one wish was to have a family of their own to defy what Hitler wanted: The annihilation of To get more information the Jewish people. Laurence Gottlieb and his wife, Marcie, established a legacy contact the Arts Culture and to honor and remember Laurence’s father, George Gottlieb. George was a Holocaust survivor Education Department at the J. who worked tirelessly with the Broward County School system to educate children about the Holocaust and the importance of “taking a stand.” Upon George’s death, Laurence and Marcie became the benefactors who renovated the MMNHLC and established the George Gottlieb Institute to provide educational opportunities for the community. Two families who did not know each other, but shared a common goal, came together to leave their legacy. So, too, the Broward community can come together to find solutions for common problems, so that together we are able to remain vigilant and maintain our dignity as we fight for the rights of others. “There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.” -MARGARET J. WHEATLEY RIGHTEOUS AMONG NATIONS On March 27, 2023, The George Gottlieb Institute at the David Posnack JCC was proud to host Mike Driquez, Deputy Consul General for the Israeli Consulate in Miami, as he presented a “Righteous Among Nations” medal to the families of Nadia Frey and Daria Tomaszek. The two sisters sheltered Jews in Poland from the Nazis during WWII, hiding them under the family’s floorboards. The descendants of those they protected, who quite literally would not have existed without the bravery shown by Nadia and Daria, were on hand to share in the joy and tears of a very meaningful evening. As the Deputy Consul General said, the sisters were not motivated by profit or selfishness of any kind; their act was one of pure goodness, and for that they are being recognized by From The HearttheStateofIsrael. 2 2ILISA AND SCOTT SARBEY DEBY EDWARDS DPJCC Payroll Benefits Specialist and Life and Legacy Program JLegacy Member “Twenty-five years ago we joined the DPJCC “I became part of the J in September of 2012. Preschool Dedication After almost 35 years, the newly renovated Susan and Saul Singer Early Childhood Learning Center was re-dedicated on February 10, 2023. The preschool opened in 1988 with a waiting list right out of the gate. It remains one of the best preschools in the South Florida area, winning many awards for its innovative programs. Hats off to the leadership team – Board Member Lauren Alperstein, former Board Member Larry Genet and former J Executive Director, Mark Sherman for leading this campaign. New additions include the NEST (Nurture - Enrich - Support - Teach), an infant and toddler care center that opened last August and the Cheryl Frost Reading Room, named in memory of long-time board member and extraordinary volunteer, Cheryl Frost. There are also many changes and additions to the outside of the preschool, including a new fence, a butterfly garden, a vegetable garden and new pathways. The end result is an even more beautiful and functional place for infants, toddlers and young children to learn.Thank you to all the donors who made this happen! Hundreds of volunteers and 6 - 11 staff have spent more than a year working to make the 2023 JCC Maccabi Games® 2023 & Access a showcase for our very caring and giving community. The David Posnack JCC will host Jewish teenagers from around the world as they compete in a variety of sports activities across Broward County. The first Maccabi Games took place in 1982 at the Baltimore JCC, and the tradition continues 41 years later at our very own J. This follows our amazingly successful 2015 games, considered by many at the time to be the best ever. More than 2,000 young people ages 12-17 are expected to not only compete, but form lifelong relationships, develop leadership skills, and work on community projects that benefit others. The athletes will be immersed in Jewish values while learning the importance of our shared history and developing an appreciation for people of different religions and cultures.
