The Cost of Free Land FEBRUARY 5 Rebecca Clarren Rebecca Clarren only knew the major plot points of her immigrant family’s origins. Her great great grandparents, the Sinykins and their six children fled antisemitism in Russia and arrived in the United States at the turn of the 20th century, ultimately settling on a 160 acre homestead in South Dakota. What none of Clarren’s ancestors ever mentioned was that their land, the foundation for much of their wealth, had been cruelly taken from the Lakota by the United States government. America had broken hundreds of treaties with hundreds of Indigenous nations across the continent, and the land that had once been reserved for the seven bands of the Lakota had been diminished, splintered, and handed for free, or practically free, to white settlers. In The Cost of Free Land, Clarren melds investigative reporting with personal family history to reveal the intertwined stories of her family and the Lakota and the devastating cycle of loss of Indigenous land, culture and resources that continues today. Leonard Cohen, Untold Stories MARCH 19 Michael Poster This third and final volume covers the last thirty years of Cohen’s life, from the mid 1980s to his death in 2016 at the age of eighty-two. It follows his extensive touring, his experiences recording and writing, his love affairs, his struggles with depression and substances, his troubled relationship with his two children and his illness and death, among other things. Unlike a conventional biography, which looks to written historical sources, Posner’s oral biography relies on the memories of others. Because memories are frequently unreliable — as Posner readily acknowledges — the results can be contradictory, inexact, impressionistic and/or just plain mistaken. Sinkable APRIL 1 Daniel Stone It’s one of the most beloved stories of all time, and it has the most gut-wrenching human themes: tragedy, trauma and survival. But what came next? Sinkable is a sequel to the widely known Titanic story — not of a ship, but of a wreck, complete with a century’s worth of scientific, economic and biological oddities. It’s a character-driven story about shipwrecks and the strange underworld of obsessive people who devote their lives to sunken ships. It includes tons of fun stories about big ships, our mysterious oceans and some wild CIA operations you’ve never heard of. Birchers APRIL 16 Matthew Dallek Satirized by Pete Seeger, ridiculed by a young Bob Dylan and dismissed as an organization for misfits and “little old ladies in tennis shoes,” the John Birch Society attracted 100,000 members within a few years of its founding in 1948. As historian Matthew Dallek’s highly readable account of the Society’s rise tells us, the organization’s mix of Cold War paranoia and “don’t tread on me” libertarianism has both shaped and remained key to contemporary political culture. From the very beginning, the John Birch Society was rooted in conspiracy theory. Contrary to popular belief, the Society’s founders were not of the fringe. They were prominent and upright citizens — “rich, white … colossi bestriding the world’s most dynamic economy.” The Escape Artist Jonathan Freedland MAY 13 What is the role of truth in today’s society? What part does denial play in our comprehension of the world around us? How is our fragile memory to be understood and preserved? Jonathan Freedland’s superb writing simultaneously explores these questions and fills the reader with rage, despair and admiration for the stubborn resistance of the human spirit. It is heart-wrenching to read the story of Rudolf Vrba, who is a mere nineteen years of age, and his fellow concentration camp inmate Fred Wetzler, who is twenty six. It is the spring of 1944, and the two young men are enduring a harrowing incarceration in Auschwitz when the extraordinary happens. Melding their minds and spirits, they hatch an outrageous plan: To be the first Jews to escape from this most highly guarded prison. Once the world knows, they are certain that steps will be taken to save the Jews in Europe. Holocaust history has long honored its heroes. Now, with this new story of a complex, formerly hidden hero, Rudolf Vrba can take his well-deserved place in public memory. Jews Across the Americas MAY 28 Adriana M. Brodsky & Laura Arnold Leibman Jews Across the Americas features an impressively broad and far reaching range of historical sources, including artifacts and objects that have not previously been featured as integral to Jewish history in the Western hemisphere. Entries teach readers how to understand everything from wills and advertisements to sermons, as well as how to interpret photographs, domestic architecture and comics. Whether it’s a recipe that blends Moroccan and Amazonian food ways from Brazil, or a text about the first non-binary Jew to cross the Atlantic in the eighteenth century, each entry broadens our understanding of Jewish American history. Jews Across the Americas is a ground breaking source book capturing the historical diversity and cultural breadth of American Jews across Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada and the United States. Featuring primary documents as well as scholarly interpretations, Jews Across the Americas builds upon new developments in Jewish Studies, engaging with transnationalism, race, sexuality, gender and highlighting the lived experiences of those often left out of Jewish history.
