Chai-ways • PAGE 2 ENDOWMENTS “Every human has four endowments: Self-awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom, the power to choose, to respond and to change.” -STEPHEN COVEY Mr. Harold Grinspoon, a real estate developer and philanthropist, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 59. At that moment he realized that making money was not enough, and he vowed to find a “higher power.” Ever since, Jewish communities have benefited in ways ranging from the P. J. Library free book program to summer camp improvements. Mr. Grinspoon noticed that many non-profit Jewish organizations were failing to raise money for a “rainy day.” He thus established the LIFE & LEGACY Campaign, which three years ago expanded to Broward County. Since then, the David Posnack JCC has been doing its share of raising future dollars. In fact, the J was recognized by the Grinspoon Foundation as being among the top seven organizations in North America with the highest percentage of people involved with the LIFE & LEGACY campaign in 2021. Mania and George Gottlieb, a Holocaust survivor, spoke to Max, both Holocaust survivors, said their “biggest legacy” was to have thousands of school children throughout his lifetime to a family of their own to continue the thread of Judaism, letting the ensure that younger generations were not only aware world know that Hitler did not win. Chai-ways • PAGE 6 The “Get On Your Feet” gala held Saturday, March 19, 2022 at the David Posnack JCC brought the 305 to the 954! Co-chairs Heather and Randy Gilbert, Adi and Louis Reinstein, and William and (the amazing) OGFENETYEOUTR! Amy Wildstein brought their “A” game to make this night the event of the year. The party began the moment you arrived with a Chevy Corvette photo opp; a “Kombi Keg” VW van-turned- beverage dispensary for you to pour your own adult drinks; and delicious hors d’oeuvres to be devoured – fuel for what came next! We danced the night away to the rhythms of the Miami Sound Revue and had a roving photo booth snap pictures of our every move. Of course, one of the highlights of the evening was honoring some of the people who make a difference in our community and motivate us to work together to make life easier for others. Community Leaders Galit and Eli Lipnik were recognized for the work they do to inspire and unite the community through volunteering and athletics. The JCC’s first-ever “Heart and Soul Award” was presented to Jared Blaut, who brings the J to life through photos, videos, and a sense of humor that was on full display in his self-produced award video. And the Legends awards were given to two couples who have dedicated their lives to the Jewish community for the past 40-plus years: Audrey and Dr. Sam Meline, and Cheri and the Honorable Ronald Rothschild. The J is all about people, and on March 19 people from all walks of life came together to have a great time, to honor those who had the foresight to build the David Posnack Jewish Community Center decades ago, and to celebrate the accomplishments of the incredible and dedicated leaders who every day strive to improve the lives of those around them. Chai-ways • PAGE 9 IT’S HAPPENING AT THE J! It’s been said that the David Posnack Jewish Community Center is the hottest spot in town. The J has programs for everyone and serves the entire community regardless of faith, ethnicity, age or ability. If you want to keep in shape, the J has the most current equipment, the most outstanding trainers and the most enjoyable exercise classes. Your body may be pushed to the limit, but you’ll be smiling the whole time. Basketball leagues for all ages are incredibly popular; an inside track for walking & running is always available; tennis, pickleball, soccer, volleyball, racquetball... name your sport, the J has it. You want culture? The J’s got culture! Attend the J’s Diane and Barry Wilen Jewish Book Festival series, enjoy films and lectures on a wide range of subjects, play mah jongg and canasta, even dine with the senior lunch crowd. Education is of the utmost importance, and the J’s award-winning preschool programs are second-to-none. There are two to choose from, one on the Davie campus and one at Temple Bat Yam in Ft. Lauderdale. And education doesn’t just stop when the school day is over. The J’s diverse After-School Adventure Program encompasses activities from athletics to homework help, Judaica, arts & crafts and more. Do you want to keep your kids busy on Saturdays with educational, fun and faith-affirming activities? Maccabi Tzair is a wonderful leadership program that in just a few years has become a major force at the David Posnack JCC. High School “madrichim” guide the younger participants on the path towards a positive future, both as individuals and as members of the Jewish community. While school is ending, the fun is just beginning at the best camp in town – Camp Kadima! It’s going to be a “Summer of Stars” as the most campers we’ve had in years play the day away at both the expansive Davie campus and the Baer Family School in Ft. Lauderdale – not to mention some of the most exciting field trip destinations South Florida has to offer. IT’S ALL HAPPENING AT THE J! Board Chair Heather Gilbert and her intelligent, fun-loving Executive Board have led the J for the past two years. On Tuesday, June 7 a new group of leaders assumed the responsibility. Thank you to Heather and her team for so successfully guiding the J through the difficult COVID era to where it is today – not only surviving, but thriving.

Laurie has been involved with the J since 1992 and has been recognized with the Reva Wexler Scholarship Award in 1993, the Evelyn and Otto Stieber Leadership Award in 2013 and the President’s Award in 2019. Laurie’s newest venture is to help to develop the George Gottlieb Holocaust & Jewish Education Program. Laurie passes the Vice Chair of Philanthropy to another experienced board member, Davia Mazur, who was the recipient of the Evelyn and Otto Stieber Leadership Award in 2009. Davia is a well-respected attorney who takes her leadership positions seriously, has a million ideas a minute, and always “thinks outside of the box.” Davia also is very active at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El where she serves on the executive board and this year will be treasurer. We are excited to work with Davia to raise additional monies and to expand and develop relationships in the community.
