The camp enrolledjust 15 children, ages 6 to 14. Fast forward to summer 2016. Giborim enrollment soared to 145 children, ages 3-22, with many more on a waiting list.Studies show that the special needs population is experiencing a steady increase with a greater demand for year-round programs. Giborim U, a year-roundprogram for children ages 6 and up, teens and adults, is an outgrowth of the J’s unique and successful summer camp and the J’s commitment to the specialneeds population. Giborim U offers 12-week semesters with courses that focus on the arts, sports, wellness, socialization and life skills plus Sunday socials.Participants will enrich their lives socially and behaviorally while gaining independence and communication skills, as they forge genuine connections toeach other and the community. Many really got into the spirit of the event and came dressed in superhero garb. Actually, everyone that participated was a superhero. Proceeds from the run benefited the JCC’s special needs camp and Relay for Life’s American Cancer Society. After 23 tournaments, the organizers have it down to a science, and everyone had a great time. This year, we had co-champions, who each won $2,900. We thank all our players, volunteers and our sponsor, the Law Firm of Cohen and Cohen, for another successful tournament. Proceeds benefit the JCC’s special needs and early childhood programs.
