Not only has this research been an amazing tool for me to learn about STIs in a real setting, but I have also been able to see the cultural aspects that affect sexual health stereotypes on a first-hand basis. I have also been fortunate enough to travel around most of the country throughout this trip and see its many gorgeous landscapes. I know that this trip will have a lasting effect on my life and my future research! I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work on a manuscript with Dr. Figura and Dr. Frakes at Moffitt Cancer Center evaluating the controversial role of local treatment for oligo-metastatic disease leading to publication in the American Journal of Clinical Oncology.  53

The entire experience was a lot more than I bargained for while simultaneously being something I wouldn’t change. The project is based on the trans-theoretical model of change. The purpose is to address patients at whatever level they are at and to help them take one step forward. 54

I have had the opportunity to travel internationally to take part in this research project. In addition to what I have learned and discovered about Tuberculosis, I have learned how we are inter-connected as a global health community and how medicine is practiced in resource-limited areas. I told them I wanted to get involved with cutting edge cancer research, and Dr. Davila was pointed out right away. Working in a basic science lab for the first 2 years on medical school was an awesome experience that allowed me to tie my coursework directly into the future on medicine within the lab. 56

It has been a privilege to work on this project, developing a telemedicine clinic tailored to the needs of patients who face many barriers to technology-enhanced care. Being part of the Public Health scholarly concentration provided me the perspective and the tools necessary to successfully carry out this project that has been so impactful to our community. It started with making the original connection to my mentor during first year, followed by traveling to Germany during my first summer to run the experiment and obtain the data. Mir, MD, MBA Orthopaedic Trauma Research Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery CONCENTRATION Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Business in Medicine The Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Business in Medicine scholarly concentration (bSC) helped me learn about different business models and therapeutic medical products that are being utilized in the Tampa Bay community. This was an eye-opening experience that is not common in a standard medical school curriculum. Thanks to the concentration, I was able to work with Dr. Mir and understand the financial implications of different medical plating technologies. I hope to continue using these lessons learned throughout my medical career. 59

It is a creative endeavor and a proposal for a practical approach to addressing some of the world’s most pressing issues including climate change, food insecurity and factors influencing physical/mental health crises. This is a business endeavor as well as a humanitarian one that has gained traction with the USF Student Innovation Incubator Program as well as has garnered the attention of many individuals from all walks of life who are interested in contributing to the solutions that may address the health of our planet. Inspired by conversations from our Medicine & Gender scholarly concentration, I developed and led a scholarly project assessing contraceptive use at the BRIDGE Healthcare Clinic in order to improve counseling and access to family planning resources. My involvement with this concentration has provided me with invaluable knowledge and skills to best serve my patients as an aspiring OB/GYN. Finite resources fought for with passionate zeal may see the true extent of their value by collaborating with like-minded pharmacies wishing to aid those same peoples. Finding a charitable pharmacy for Tampa Bay Street Medicine was a months long process of trial and error ultimately culminating in a successful relationship with Tampa Family Pharmacy. I hope my take and pointed guide will aid future students endeavoring to make the most of their philanthropic pursuits. 64

I gained valuable insight into the rapidly growing body of literature on the SARS-CoV-2 virus and valued the opportunity to contribute to the effort against an unprecedented challenge to medical providers everywhere. 66

I presented a poster to the Florida Allergy,InteUrSnFaMl MCeOdM Asthma, and Immunology Society meeting detailing a pathway to implement programs that provide a stock supply of nonspecific epinephrine pens to local schools in the event that a child has their first anaphylactic reaction. By working with two pharmaceutical companies within the context of a new state law, we were able to supply epinephrine to all of the schools in Sarasota County. Our initial participants highlighted the value this program has in giving students a unique perspective into the many barriers to health that older adults experience; my goal through this capstone is to supplement this benefit with additional educational materials that provide further insight into social determinants of health specific to older adults. My involvement in the Medical Education scholarly concentration has given me the valuable research and educational tools to make this project a valuable learning experience for the students involved. As a new first year medical student, I had no idea female physicians had to deal with patients constantly thinking they were nurses and didn’t know endometriosis existed. I’m always looking for experiences that help me learn about new things. However, it remains without critical analysis of a population often thought to not be as affected by classic vascular issues - women. This project was inspired by recent efforts to bring a core, often silent, population to the forefront of research and think critically about the medical and surgical differences that affect this population in peripheral vascular disease. 73

I had USF’s and Freiburg’s support to set up a research project searching for novel mutated genes in epidermal nevi syndromes that were referred to us from the dermatology clinic. My experience collaborating in a multinational lab, and living independently abroad is an opportunity I am sincerely grateful for. 74

Through this concentration, I found a research project that studied anesthetic technique and its effect on cancer survival, two things that I am passionate about. 75

Under their tutelage, I also had the privilege of joining their Public Health students in traveling to rural clinical sites to discuss the challenges of healthcare delivery in the region. This project deepened my understanding of the complex interaction between health, culture, and community.
