HAPPY HEART TALK 40TH ORDINATION Rev. Fr. Abraham Kazhunnadiyil ANNIVERSARY GOD BLESS YOU Parish Priest St. Thomas the Apostle Syro Malabar Parish Brisbane South “We are the Easter People and Alleluia is our song”. It is one of Pope John Paul II’s most famous quotes. The pope delivered this message on a visit to Australia on Sunday, November 30, 1986. We are not looking for a shallow joy but rather a joy that comes from faith that grows through unselfish love. That joy is demanding. It demands a readiness to say with Mary, “Be it done unto me according to Thy Word.” Here we are reminded of our identity as Easter People. As we are celebrating Easter, once again let us keep in mind our identity as an Easter people. Let us see the face of the Resurrected Jesus in every one we meet every day in our families, in our family units and neighborhoods, in our parish community, in our work places, in our fellow passengers with whom we journey together, at the shopping centers etc. Wish you all a joyful Easter! This is the third edition of Santhom Insights. This magazine really helps us to share our faith experiences and joys with other people by using our own innate talents. It has helped us, as it was intended, to foster an inter-personal relationship within our community and with other communities in Brisbane. I encourage our youth and children to make use of this great opportunity to express your views and insights with the wider community. I appreciate and thank the dedicated team behind this venture for their commitment, effort, and passion for this creative work. I am grateful to each one of my parishioners for the cooperation, encouragement and love you have been very generously giving to me for the last three years as your parish priest. As I am completing 40 years of my priesthood on April 15, I request your valuable prayers for me to continue my priestly ministry, faithfully following the footsteps of the great shepherd, Jesus Christ, my Lord and my God. 3

EASTER MESSAGE Rev. Fr. Rony Kalapurackal Chacko MCBS THE OFFICIAL PARISH MAGAZINE Parish Priest, Star of the Sea Catholic Parish, Cleveland SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR Rev. Fr. Abraham Kazhunnadiyil Feast of HOPE (Parish Priest) Easter is the feast of hope, which transforms our sorrows EXECUTIVE EDITOR into joy. For Christians, it means the proclamation of release Sebastian Anthikkattu over suffering, hope over despair and life over death. One of the things all the resurrection accounts of the Gospels have EDITORIAL COUNCIL in common is the stone rolled back from the entrance to the Johnson Punneliparambil tomb. Have you allowed a stone to prevent you from meeting Shibu Mathew the Risen Jesus? Have you allowed the stone of becoming Simon Mulangan engrossed in what you have and own and what others have and Priya Jiju own to block your way to Jesus? We were adopted as God’s son Rasin Augustine or daughter on the day we were baptized. If you are not living Mini Jolly like a son or daughter of God, roll away the stone. If you are not Tessy Jogy happy, that is a sure sign that the stone needs to be rolled away in your life. If you knew the risen Jesus, you would have such ADVERTISEMENT COUNCIL joy in your heart that nothing else could give you. Judin Jose Joshy Joseph A Pastor once travelling in a plane describes a beautiful episode. Shaji Theckanath It was a long flight, there was the sign of a storm, and all were Francis Joseph asked to fasten their seat belts. They also received the message Roy Mathew about the difficulty to serve beverages and meal. The Pastor Sindhu Jenny looked around the aircraft to see many of the passengers were Shaini Esthappanose becoming apprehensive. The ominous cracks of thunder could Jasmine Brijesh be heard even above the roar of the engines. Lightening lit up the darkening skies, and within moments, that great plane DISTRIBUTION IN-CHARGE was as a cork tossed around on a celestial ocean. One moment Babychen Chirackal the airplane was lifted on terrific currents of air; the next, it Ivan Jolly dropped as if it were about to crash. The pastor confessed that he shared the discomfort and fear of those around him. As DESIGN he looked around the plane, he could see that nearly all the Brilston Francis, Manama- Bahrain passengers were upset and alarmed and some started praying. Then he saw a little girl to whom the storm meant nothing. She PHOTOGRAPHY had tucked her feet beneath her as she sat on her seat and Augustine Jogy was reading a book. Everything within her small world was calm and orderly. Sometimes she closed her eyes, then she would TYPING ASSISTANCE read again; then she would straighten her legs, but worry Shijo George and fear were not in her world. The plane finally reached its Antumon Joseph destination and all the passengers were hurrying to disembark, he lingered to speak to the girl whom he had watched for such MAILING ADDRESS a long time. Having commented about the storm and asked her Santhom Insights why she had not been afraid, the sweet child replied, “Sir, my St Thomas the Apostle Syro Malabar Parish Dad is the pilot, and he is taking me home.” Dear friends, we 108 - 112 Middle Road, Hillcrest, QLD, 4118 celebrated the last couple of Easters in the midst of fear and anxiety. EASTER REFLECTION again at EASTER Easter is an invitation to rise again from the various age of wide spread denial of God, human beings are types of death that we experience in our lives. Jesus’ given into deep despair. They cannot see anything rising from the dead is the foundation of Christian beyond the material end of realities. Many of their life. “…and if Christ has not been raised, then our questions never get answered because they believe proclamation has been in vain and your faith has only in the material world. Their quest is short lived and been in vain“ (1 Cor 15:14). That’s how significant is takes them to a deeper vacuum in life which takes away Jesus’ resurrection in Christian life. Dying is not the all the joy and hope from their life. That, again, is death end of Christian life but rising from the death is the and here is an invitation to rise from this despair and challenging new way of Christian living and hope. enter into the joy and hope that the Risen Lord brings to us at the season of Easter. What is death? It is the absence of life and everything Anything that diminishes the value of life is death. It that promotes life. Jesus defeated death. “I came that could be fear, guilt, falsehood, lust, crimes, negative they may have life, and have it abundantly”(John addictions, ego, a political ideology, extremism, 10:10). Rising is a challenge for everyone, not just for terrorism, etc. By rising from the death, Jesus defeated Christians. Easter is a time when all of us are invited to all these and other dehumanizing and life-limiting rise; rise from the many deaths of our lives. elements of human life. Jesus’ resurrection is a call for each one of us to rise from these personal and social Death permeates into all aspects of human life. All circumstances of death. “Sleeper, awake. Rise from the mortals are bound to experience death. Sin brought dead, and Christ will shine on you”(Eph 5:14b). death to the world. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Johnson Punneliparambil Lord”(Rom 6:23). Sin causes spiritual death in human life and it separates us from the divine life. Through Jesus who rose from the dead we receive eternal life as a free gift and get reunited with God. Therefore, Easter is a call to rise from sin and death and gloriously enter into communion with God. Death comes in different other forms to humans. Living without joy and hope is a near death experience. PARISH REPORT PARISHDIARY NOV 2021 - MAR 2022 The year 2021 has been very challenging in many different ways compared to the previous years due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has had a major influence on the smooth functioning of our Parish. At the start of the year, we went through Covid-19 restrictions and most of our pastoral activities had to be suspended, but we continued our regular Holy Mass at church with live telecast for our parishioners via Facebook and Youtube platforms. Our Parish has successfully managed the difficult Covid-19 circumstances with efficiency by introducing an online booking system for the Holy Mass. With the growing concerns of the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Brisbane and around the world, our church took adequate preventive measures and complied with the Queensland government guidelines. Our church is currently fully functional and all the facilities are open for parishioners. Congratulations to Rev. Fr.Abraham Kazhunnadiyl, our parish priest, Trustees and all the volunteers who relentlessly helped our community during this difficult time. ‘SANTHOM’ Multicultural 2021 Our parish organized ‘SANTHOM’ Multicultural Dance and Food Fest on 6th of November 2021 from 10 am to 7:30 pm in association with the Queensland government and Logan City council. This event gave us an opportunity to meet and greet people from various ethnic backgrounds and helped us to understand their customs and traditions. There were 75 non- stop live cultural performances throughout the day; Face painting, Outdoor games, Jumping castle and a Portable animal farm added color to the event. Delicious multi-cuisine food stalls were another attraction to replenish the energy throughout the day. The raffle draw conducted at the end of the event attracted the crowd the most due to its stunning prizes like Royal Enfield motor bike, ipad, cash vouchers etc. Bible Kalotsavam Our parish has always valued the art and cultural programs as a form of expressing the message of the Gospel in an attractive manner. We conducted the 2021 Bible Kalotsavam on 4th December 2021 at our campus for Sunday school students from Years 1 to 10. Sub Juniors (Grades 1 to 3), Juniors (Grades 4 to 6), and Seniors (Grades 7 to 10) actively participated and won attractive prizes. All the winners received prizes during the Parish day celebration on 11th December. Bible Week Celebration We celebrated a week honoring the Holy Bible and reciting hymns and prayers at home from November 28 to December 5. Guidelines were given to the parishioners to make this an effective devotion at home. New Parish Council On 21st November, the new parish council members were introduced to the parish community and then they took oath in the name of God. The former parish council members handed over the files to the new committee members. The newly elected members held their first Parish Council Meeting on the same day. This year we have a total of 110 students registered for Malayalam classes. Birthday and Wedding Anniversary Blessings As part of our Parish mission and Journey through the year 2022, one of our objectives is to greet our children on their birthdays with prayerful wishes and blessings on Sundays after the Mass. Children from prep to year 12, celebrating their birthdays that week, are invited to the front of the altar for a blessing and a gift. In February, we started this initiative which has been well received by the parents and children. Another objective of our Parish mission is to celebrate the wedding anniversaries of our parishioners. The last Saturday of every month is dedicated to the couples in our Parish celebrating their wedding anniversary in that particular month. Fund-raising for Rose Garden It has been a busy schedule for the Trustees and parish council members as we started food sales on Sundays in order to raise funds to redesign and set up a rose garden in the church campus. We have successfully sold hundreds of packets of delicious Biryani, Kerala Porotta and curry on Sundays after the Mass. Welcoming new families With the outbreak of Covid-19, Queensland witnessed steady growth in inter-state migration. Brisbane has been one of the attractive destinations for the migrants. We have a welcome ceremony for the newcomers on every first Sunday of the month. In the January- February time frame, we welcomed more than 30 new families to our parish. Adoration on First Fridays On the first Fridays of every month parishioners spent a day with the Lord in Adoration from 9 am to 7 pm. We conclude the day with Holy Mass at 7 pm. Thomas Mathew has been appointed as the coordinator for the first Friday Adoration. SMYM Brisbane South The SMYM has a strength of around 125 members. Every family unit has a youth representative. The youth leadership focuses on building healthy relationships among themselves and cooperating with the activities of the parish. In early March, the youth team elected their new leaders as the previous leadership team completed their tenure successfully. The newly elected team with coordinator, Jislyn Joseph took oath on 13th March after the Mass. The newly renovated ‘Chaya kada’ at the church campus is managed by our young vibrant youth team to raise funds for their various ministry activities. 18
QLD Flood Relief In February 2022, South-East Queensland witnessed a major flooding interrupting the normal lives of thousands of Queenslanders. Our parish collected a total of $4035 towards the flood relief fund to support a badly impacted young member family. Ukraine Relief Fund Our church has been actively monitoring the situation in Ukraine and offered our prayers. Along with our Eparchy, Melbourne, we wanted to show our solidarity for fellow Eastern Catholics in Ukraine, like the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Towards this humanitarian effort, we collected $2410.90 on Sunday, 20th March, and the same amount has been handed over to the diocese. Parish Safety Month We are absolutely committed to the safety of our children. March 10 to April 10, 2022 was dedicated as a Safety Month to promote parish safety with special focus on children and the vulnerable. As part of this, a safeguarding training was arranged for all the volunteers in our parish on 2nd April by the Resource Persons from the Eparchy. The Parish Safety Officers conducted an audit of all our existing and new volunteers across various ministries to comply with the government rules and regulations when dealing with children. Appropriate measures are in place now to track Blue Card status. All the volunteers are issued an ‘Offer Letter’ confirming their appointment to work as a volunteer at our parish. “No Blue Card, no working with children” is the policy of the parish. Annual Retreat Parish Annual Retreat was conducted on April 8,9, and 10. Fr. Joby George V.C. from the Divine Retreat Centre, Sydney led the three days retreat. There was a special session for children on the 9th April from 9 am to 1 pm and confession for all parishioners were arranged during this time. Catechism Students Council The catechism department at our parish formed a Students’ Council team this year from grade 4 to grade 12 in order to bring in ideas and leadership from the students. The newly elected Students’ council members from each grade took pledge on 3rd April after the 9 am Holy Mass.
