Mrs. Dorothy Schm idt Sand ra Ch risto ph erso n MARCHIONESS Advisor Pre so dent Lively green dresses with bright H's became a familiar and welcome sight at Hillcrest this year as uniformed members of the Pep Club performed their services . Team members' lockers were imaginatively decorated, annual teas with other high school clubs were held, and before-school rallies were invigorated with Mar- chioness ' typical vitality. Their half-time marches and determined cheering were the forming point for a strong school spirit, just as their presence and all their activities were the foundation of school unity. CHEERLEADERS Organizing rallies and arranging the homecoming celebration, our cheerleaders were this year's promoters of enthusiasm. Their spirited touch was seen in the hall decorations and posters they created and displayed. Most important, climax- ing their efforts towards the promotion of school spirit, the cheerleaders co- ordinated yells at the games to help make Hillcrest the best of cheering sections.

SONGLEADERS Organized as an experiment in promoting school spirit, the songleaders have demonstrated a fresh approach to the already successful job of the cheerleaders -that of directing the student body in cheering at pep rallies and at basketball games. These six lively and appealing girls have done much to generate new enthusiasm among the students of Hillcrest High, thus setting a solid precedent for future songleaders. Gloria Cann ing Head Songleader

PEP ASSEMBLIES With the accompaniment of the rhythmic playing of the pep band, the vivacious cheerleaders and songleaders led the student body in cheering and at pep assemblies held to pro- mote enthusiasm and school spirit before our basketball and football games. Skits presented by the Dance Club and the Marchioness cleverly portrayed the defeat of the opposing team by the Hillcrest Huskies. 52

VARSITY FOOTBALL Under the able leadership of a new coach, Tom Lovat, Donn Griffith, Rick Hess the Hillcrest football team underwent a tough training program that enabled them to have the best season Captains in the history of the school. Although the team was not able to place high in region competition , their three wins and five losses show that Hillcrest is \" on the way up, \" and an encouraged student body looks forward to an even better football season next year. Halfback Craig Smith is tackled before Dennis Halpin can stop Judge with a saving block. Craig Seal, defensive end, made a hard sidelines tackle to stop a possible gainer by Granite. During halftime, Coach Tom Lovat outlined improvements in strategy. Having avoided downfield blockers, Hillcrest tacklers pressed 57 to hold Olympus' kickoff return to short yardage.

The Olympus ball carrier found himself all alone with the Hillcrest defense. Hillcrest made hard yards through Murray's forward line. 58

SOPHOMORE FOOTBALL The completing of an undefeated season has shown the members of the sophomore football team the value of a hard training program such as they experienced under the supervision of Coach Anderson. The strong physical fitness and outstanding teamwork that came as a result of this training have been invaluable in achieving a flawless record of victories. Row One : D. Show, C. Hothenbrook, K. Though surrounded by defenders, Don Stepan broke into the clear for a shot against Jordan. A slow rebound in the Jordan-Hillcrest game led to tight action. Stepan tried for the tip-in, but was stopped by a high-jumping defender. Donn Griffith made a spectacular block to stop a Davis offensive drive. 62

In spite of a high rebound, many hands were close to the ball after a Hillcrest shot. A closely timed sequence of pictures shows the progress of George Hughes' successful foul shot. Competition with South for the rebounds was close and hard. 63

JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Always a training place for future varsity stars, the Junior Varsity basketball team this year continued to provide valuable player experience. They finished a successful season with a respectable record against their region opponents. The team-work, discipline, and personal skill built up to accomplish this feat were the things which will help make next year's varsity a winning team.
