Portraying the high tension during the first half of the Hillcrest-Jordan Jennifer Willand game, Irene Peterson, Julie Moore, and Ginger Eckman start a chant. Deb Odorizzi By attending a special conference at Utah State Ginger Eckman University during the second week of August, Hill- crest's cheerleaders improved their abilities by learn~ ing modern techniques. During the week, the six girls attended workshops from 6:00a.m. until 4:00 p.m. to learn rhythmic, forceful, and sharp motions to enable students to follow them in cheers at greater distances. Through nightly competitive con~ tests, the girls won an excellent and a superior award while competing against other cheering squads from throughout the state. Returning to Hillcrest, the cheerleaders, in order to establish new enthusiasm in the studentbody, taught \"soul cheers\" they had learned including \"Ah Beep-Beep,\" \"Do It,\" and the \"Silent Cheer.\" Also instigating ideas of their own to build spirit, the cheerleaders tried boy-girl competitions, pep rallies in the main hall during lunch, and two morning pep-assemblies before big games. Bringing their arms down sharply to their sides Irene Peterson, Cindy Mann, Ginger Eckman, Deb Odorizzi, Jennifer Willand, and Julie Moore signal to the studentbody they are ready to begin the cheer \"Husky Howl.\" Julie Moore 55

After talking with their advisor, Mrs. Dorothy Schmidt, the songleaders along with the cheer- leaders obtained permission for the first time to keep their hair long if worn up off the shoulders on game days. For football season the songleaders changed the usual songleader's dress image by choosing a pleated skirt for their uniform. To accompany their modern attire the girls performed sharp, fast rou- tines to modern music including \"Spinning Wheel, \" \"Sunshine of Your Love,\" and \"Hawaii 5-0.\" Returning to more traditional styles during basketball season, the girls included old songs such as \"Rock Around the Clock\" and \"Hey Look Us Over\" in their routines. Once again the audi- ences were aware of the feminine movements, lace, and the circle skirts as the songleaders helped boost school spirit. During a time-out, Sydney Glende, Linda Moser, Karen Crump, Camile Ware, and Debbie Sungberg perform a lively routine. Beverly Newbold 57
