The World Travel & Tourism Council calculated that tourism generated INR 6.4 trillion or 6.6% of the nation’s GDP in 2012. It supported 39.5 million jobs, 7.7% of its total employment. The sector is predicted to grow at an average annual rate of 7.9% from 2013 to 2023. This gives India the third rank among countries with the fastest growing tourism industries over the next decade. India’s rich history and its cultural and geographical diversity make its international tourism appeal large and diverse. 2 Mehrangarh Fort located in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, is one of the largest forts in India and a place of major tourist attraction. Though the fort was originally started in 1459 by Rao Jodha, founder of Jodhpur, most of the fort which stands today dates from the period of Jaswant Singh (1638–78). The foundation of the fort was laid on May 12, 1459 by Jodha on a rocky hill, 9 kilometres to the south of Mandore with the trusted aid of Rao Nara. This hill was known as Bhaurcheeria, the mountain of birds. 3 According to a legend, to build the fort Rao Jodha had to displace the hill’s sole human occupant, a hermit called Cheeria Nathji, the lord of birds. Upset at being forced to move Cheeria Nathji cursed Rao Jodha with “Jodha! May your citadel ever suffer a scarcity of water”. Rao Jodha managed to appease the hermit by building a house and a temple in the fort, very near the cave, the hermit had used for meditation. Even today, the area is plagued by drought every 3 to 4 years. 4 The fort’s walls, which are up to 36 metres (118 ft) high and 21 metres (69 ft) wide, protect some of the most beautiful and historic palaces in Rajasthan. Entry to the fort is gained through a series of seven gates. The imprints of cannonball hits, by attacking armies of Jaipur, can still be seen on the second gate. To the left of the fort is the chhatri of Kirat Singh Soda, a soldier who fell on the spot defending the fort. 5 Within the fort, several brilliantly crafted and decorated palaces are found which are known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards. Of these, Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), Sheesha Mahal (Mirror Palace), Sileh Khana, and Daulat Khana are notable. The museum in the fort is one of the most well-stocked museums in Rajasthan. In one section of the fort museum there is a selection of old royal palanquins, including the elaborate domed gilt Mahadol palanquin which was won in a battle from the Governor of Gujarat in 1730. The museum exhibits the heritage of the Rathores in arms, costumes, paintings and decorated period rooms. One can also see royal cradles, miniatures, musical instruments, costumes and furniture in the museum. 6 Mehrangarh is made of two words: ‘Mihir’ in Sanskrit means Sun-deity; and ‘garh’ in Sanskrit means fort; i.e. ‘Sun-fort’. According to Rajasthani language pronunciation conventions, ‘Mihirgarh’ has changed to ‘Mehrangarh’; the Sun-deity has been the chief deity of the Rathore dynasty. 7 The 500-year-old fort is a popular site for filming. The movie The Dark Knight Rises was shot here. 8 The ramparts of the fort are home to not only several excellently preserved old cannons (including the famous Kilkila) but also offer a breathtaking view of the city. Read the passage given below. 1 The arts which admit of exact reproduction are such that the disciple is on the same level as the creator, and so it is with their fruits. These are useful to the imitator, but are not of such high excellence as those which cannot be transmitted as an inheritance like other substances. Among these, painting is the first. Painting cannot be taught to him on whom nature has not conferred the gift of receiving such knowledge, as mathematics can be taught, of which the disciple receives as much as the master gives him. 2 It cannot be copied, as letters can be, in which the copy equals the original. It cannot be stamped, in the same way as sculpture, in which the impression is in proportion to the source as regards the quality of the work. It does not generate countless children, as do printed books. 3 It alone remains noble, it alone confers honour on its author and remains precious and unique, and does not beget children equal to itself. And it is more excellent by reason of this quality than by reason of those which are everywhere proclaimed. Now do we not see the great monarchs of the East going about veiled and covered up from the fear of diminishing their glory by the manifestation and the divulgation of their presence? And do we not see that the pictures which represent the divine deity are kept covered up with inestimable veils? 4 Their unveiling is preceded by great sacred solemnities with various chants and diverse music. When they are unveiled, the vast multitude of people who are there flocked together, immediately prostrate themselves and worship. They invoke those whom such pictures represent that they may regain their lost holiness and win eternal salvation, just as if the deity were present in the flesh. 5 This does not occur in any other art or work of man. If you say that is owing to the nature of the subject depicted, rather than to the genius of the painter, the answer is that the mind of man could satisfy itself equally well in this case, were the man to remain in bed and not make pilgrimages to places which are perilous and hard to access as we so often see is the case. 6 But if such pilgrimages continually exist, what is then their unnecessary cause? You will certainly admit that it is an image of this kind, and all the writings in the world could not succeed in representing the semblance and the power of such a deity. 7 Therefore it appears that this deity takes pleasure in the pictures and is pleased that it should be loved and revered, and takes a greater delight in being worshipped in that rather than in any other semblance of itself. By this reason, it bestows grace and gifts of salvation according to the belief of those who meet together in such a place. (A) 25A, Ashok Nagar New Delhi 1100XX 25 October 20XX The Editor The Hindustan Times KG Marg Delhi 1100XX Dear Sir Subject: The Menace of Road Rage Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I want to draw the attention of the authorities concerned and the masses in general to reckless and rash driving. It is highly perturbing to read about the cases of road rage in the Capital. Nowadays, the level of aggression has reached its peak. Minor altercations lead to heated arguments resulting in injuries or, in some extreme cases, even death. Road rage in most cases is due to lack of traffic sense, impatience or excessive speed to name a few. Children, below 18 years of age, drive their bikes at flying speeds. Their excitement results in accidents. Everyone cringes about road accidents but never realizes that these happen due to their own carelessness. Be it an adult or a teenager, everyone wants to move speedily, hardly caring for the life of others. Even the traffic police are helpless when it comes to traffic control. It’s high time authorities concerned took steps to control road rage problems. People should be made aware of the traffic rules so that they follow them faithfully. If not, then hefty fines must be imposed. A safe country is a growing country. Hope my letter would find a suitable place in your newspaper. (A) Importance of Career Counselling With the increasing number of colleges and universities, the variety of courses offered is also increasing. For a student it is a dilemma. If a student chooses a path and career that is far away from his interest and ability, it can cause long-term dissatisfaction. Hence it is essential to plan one’s future carefully for success and contentment. Most students choose a career based on factors like following the peers, accepting parents’ choice, lack of knowledge about other fields, current trends or grabbing the most sought-after career opportunities. At such a point, career counselling helps. Career counselling involves personality tests, aptitude tests and interviews. Based on the report of a student, the counselling panel guides the child through his career choice. A child should be made free to choose his area of interest. Career counselling helps one to find the true calling of his talent and choose the career 62 Together with® EAD English Core—12
path accordingly. It also helps to define the pros and cons of each course and career path it offers, hence clarifying students’ doubts. Career counselling can boost the morale and confidence, and gives new inclination to the students which will be beneficial to the whole society. Thus, with the help of career counselling, most students end up choosing the right career, and performing their level best, which ultimately helps them succeed and achieve new heights. The ‘Mission Admission’ launched by the Times of India is one such platform, which helps college aspirants to get knowledge about emerging opportunities in various streams so that they can decide their career. According to an eyewitness in the Okhla Industrial Area, a caravan of trucks halted in the area and a group of eight men armed with lassoos and tranquilliser guns leapt out and soon the whole place was transformed into a bull ring. The catchers rounded up 22 stray cattle from this area on the first day, six of these were buffaloes. These animals were sent to a shelter house run by Delhi Administration ‘gaushalas’. It is expected that similar drives will be launched by the municipal authorities of West Delhi and North Delhi. 10. When the church-clock struck twelve, choking he turned towards the blackboard and wrote as large as he could: ‘Vive La France’. 11. (a) On seeing the man stagger to his feet, Dr Sadao and his wife presumed he was a fisherman, until they turned him over and saw his white face. (b) The psychiatrist friend of Charley thought that the third level was a kind of wish fulfillment for Charley as he was stressed out. Charley disagreed because he was sure of the third level and became more sure after he found out about Sam’s disappearance and his letter. (c) A small creature named Roger had some problem. He would go to the wise owl who would direct him to the wizard. The wizard would perform a magic spell and solve the problem. At home he would have supper with his daddy. 12. (A) What Roosevelt said was that one should not fear death but fear the fear of it. That terror lies only in being afraid of the unknown. It is the fear of facing the ordeals that stand in the way of a man’s will to overcome them. Douglas learnt that there is peace in death but terror in the fear of death. The author draws a larger meaning from his near-death experience. He is able to overcome his deep-rooted childhood fear by sheer grit and determination. He lived in fear of water and then conquered it. He experienced the sensation of dying and the terror that it could produce. All this helped him to get rid of his fear forever. Or (B) The slum children lead a pathetic life amidst hunger and poverty. They are unkempt, malnourished and emaciated. Their faces are like rootless weeds—unwanted, ugly and parasitic. They have inherited diseased bones from their parents. Their pitiable plight is reflected by equally dim and pathetic classrooms which is utterly demoralising and hopeless. Education is the key which can unlock these children from their dreary state. With the right exposure and quality education these children can be magically released from their bondage. Also, Stephen Spender appeals to the officials, i.e. the inspectors, visitors and governors to realise their moral responsibility towards these children and become sensitive to their needs. This way only the barriers that hinder the growth of the children can be thrown away. 13. (A) Dr Sadao’s profession dictated that the responsibility towards his patient was paramount. He therefore made sure that his patient recovered sufficiently to row to safety. Dr Sadao followed the code of medical ethics and treated the man even though his rational side dictated that he hand over the prisoner to the authorities. He had subdued his personal prejudices in pursuit of what was morally justifiable. Dr Sadao hadn’t had very pleasant experiences in America where people were prejudiced against his Japanese descent and refrained from renting out lodgings to his community. Yet these considerations did not cloud his moral judgement of helping a white enemy soldier. That it gave him professional satisfaction is evident from the fact that in the course of the operation he addressed the man as ‘my friend’ thereby subconsciously burying differences. His morally upright decision proved right, for everything turned out in his favour, assuaging all chances of a bitter aftermath, or sense of guilt. Or (B) It is obvious that the perspectives of both an adult and a child towards life are different. And this is due to different thinking, ideologies, experiences and exposure to the world around them. An adult comes across all sorts of experiences in his/her life—good, bad, happy, sad, up, down, everything. On the other hand, a child is free from all the worries of life. He lives under the protection of his parents. He is unaware of the world outside, the outer world. In their dream world of fantasies, nothing bad can happen to their favourite characters. These characters make them believe that good always takes over the bad which appears real to them. But adults know the harsh realities of life and have to cope with them. They look at the world in a totally new light as brought out in ‘Should Wizard Hit Mommy?’ 64 Together with® EAD English Core—12
