But somewhere you know it exists I am like a bark of wood, a wrinkled hand, a cigarette butt. rusty, fragile and used . I wake up. Tangled in my thoughts a woman unknown. Scribbling little things on the corners of the sheet, then thinking, writing, sulking and finally pulling off the sheet to write something better. I am the best critic and sometimes the worst too. I’m the mother of some very appreciated works, an ashen soul who has lost the inspiration to write. People write me letters about how I’ve changed their lives with my books and how they’d like to know what drives me to write. I have no answers. Well let’s not waste time, let’s have a look at the letters. My house is full of letters, letters on the kitchen floor, letters under the tables, letters under the pillows, letters stacked inside the cupboard. Too many letters to read. They sit and sit on my window like birds beautifully lacerated in red, crying in unison. I do not want to listen to them so I burn them, they warm me when I’m there with a cup of coffee and the woman on my mind. I’ve had a beautiful love affair once, the guy who told me he loved watching me get excited about things. Like I had this distinct amazement when I saw puppies and colorful socks. So he would send me pictures of pups and buy me colorful warm socks. Love was his little poems and songs he wrote for me until he wrote his last one. He told me to read it aloud, it was the poem of our friendship with very decorative words. But the last line of the poem just said “Look at me”, and when I did. He was gone. It was like someone snatching the remote from my hand while I was watching my favorite show. That was love-I chose it. But this longing for the woman in my head is what I do not get to choose.
