7 Steps to Use Walking Crutches Are you facing difficulties while walking? Or does walking induces pain in your lower body part due to some injury or maybe another factor? Then using walking crutches can be helpful. There are many types of walking crutches available in the market; you can choose one according to your needs and comfort. What is a crutch? A crutch helps to reduce your body weight load on your affected or injured leg. It also supports you and improves your stability. It is most helpful to people when they need to maneuver a place where wheelchairs can go. Here are a few guidelines or steps on how to use walking crutches. What are the guidelines to use walking crutches? • Most people make mistakes by supporting themselves with their armpits. This is the wrong way to use a walking crutch, you should always use the handgrips for support. These days, ergonomic crutches are used by many people, because they provide a comfortable handgrip with a hand leaning support with cushion pads. • Always place your walking crutches 8 to 10 inches in front of you while you are standing still. • Make sure to keep the crutches close to your body while walking, whether it’s an ergonomic crutch or a normal one. Don't try to take long steps using the crutches and always walk at your pace, don't try to speed up. • If you ever happen to use stairs in any emergency case, make sure there is someone to assist. If you don’t, then it might be dangerous and life- threatening. • While coming down using stairs, keep the crutch below the step you are standing on and then use the good leg steadily. • If you are using a single crutch for support, then place the crutch on the opposite arm of your weaker leg. While walking, move your weaker leg and the crutch simultaneously at the same time, then move your strong leg to take the next step. • People who have no experience with walking crutches often find it uncomfortable to use at first. And crutch comfort can cause a problem, especially for senior citizens who are very sensitive about their comfort. If you have serious issues related to comfort, then you can also use ergonomics crutches that come with integrated cushions on the handgrip area and hand support area. The following up of all these steps will never make you fall. So, get continuous support with these steps to live your life independently.
